The GM Authority Take
Chevy Equinox sales significantly outpaced the segment in January 2018. The performance catapulted the model into third place in its competitive set and almost into second.
The compact crossover’s sales trailed those of the Nissan Rogue in first place, which we suspect were the result of big sales to daily rental fleets, as well as the Toyota RAV4 in second. Notably, the Equinox only trailed the RAV4 by only 250 units. The Equinox outsold its remaining competitors, including the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape (see Ford Escape sales), Jeep Cherokee (see Jeep Cherokee sales), Mazda CX-5 (see Mazda CX-5 sales), Subaru Forester, Jeep Compass (see Jeep Compass sales), Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Tucson, the Equinox’s platform mate – the GMC Terrain (see GMC Terrain sales), Volkswagen Tiguan (see VW Tiguan sales), as well as the Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander.
We attribute the impressive sales performance to the following three factors:
- An all-new, competitive model that represents an attractive overall product
- Smart incentives to move existing inventory units
- A continuous change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics, where shoppers choose crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) over other vehicle types like sedans

About Chevrolet Equinox
The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover. It slots above the Chevrolet Trax and below the Chevrolet Traverse. It will also be positioned below the rumored to be the future Chevrolet Blazer.
The first-generation Equinox ran from the 2005-2009 model years and was based on the first-generation Theta platform. The second-generation Equinox was offered from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. Both the first- and second-generation models were “tweeners”, in that they straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The third-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its two predecessors, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.
The third-generation, 2018 and newer Equinox features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.
The Chevrolet Equinox is built primarily at the GM CAMI factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada. Two GM Mexico facilities – GM San Luis Potosi and GM Ramos Arizpe – also share in producing the vehicle for North America.

Chevrolet’s Equinox is aggressively priced at just $23,580 means it will take business from shoppers who may weren’t even thinking of a buying a CUV; but all they need to do is look at the starting price and they’re hooked.
Sales numbers are tricky – where are the numbers coming from? Is the bump due to strong fleet sales for the month or retail sales which is the true test of any vehicle. It’s great that they can dump a “fleet” of them to rental companies and such but if the public isn’t buying them that’s a serious problem. I wish there was a way for us to know a breakdown of the numbers. I often see a huge jump in numbers for a month and the next month sales are off (down), I presume that temporary increase is due in part to fleet sales. I’m curious to see what Feb’s number are, I’m willing to bet they will not be as big or perhaps even down. I”m always amazed how companies spin sales, especially when it is fleets sales, to make it seem like vehicles are flying out the showrooms.
Frankly, what sold me on the new Equinox were its (to me) greater physical appeal than either the RAV4 or CR-V and its VASTLY superior technology offerings in the Premier trim vs. Premium in the RAV4 and AWD Touring in the CR-V.
Granted, the RAV4 is getting long in the tooth and is due for a redesign for the 2019 MY and, although the CR-V just came out December of 2016, neither one of them offers ventilated seats, rear passenger heated seats, On demand driver selectable AWD, WiFi 4G LTE connectivity or a 24-7 service such as OnStar. I do like both of them and test drove both several times and have owned 3 Hondas over the course of 30 years with an excellent ownership experience regarding all 3.
What the Equinox in Premier guise offers which the other two don’t:
OnStar capable (= 24-7 support!) (STANDARD)
Ventilated front seats (STANDARD)
Heated rear seats and seat backs (STANDARD)
Rear passenger air vents (STANDARD)
6 USB ports (4 are data ports & can connect to the infotainment system) (STANDARD)
3 12v power outlets (STANDARD)
1 110v electrical outlet (STANDARD)
4G LTE WiFi capable (STANDARD)
Wireless phone charger (with compatible model phone) (STANDARD)
Last but certainly not least, a heated steering wheel – which comes..that’s right! You guessed it! STANDARD!
What the Equinox Premier lacks vs. RAV4 Premium and CR-V Touring:
Adaptive Cruise Control
Pedestrian braking
oh, and the CR-V offers a rear floor board that can be raised or lowered 2″ (the Equinox has a concealed “tube” storage in the front door storage areas into which you can slide a mid-sized umbrella – so..there!).
Greater resale value
Better fuel economy (the CR-V but not the RAV4)
“Alleged” overall better reliability (that depends on who you ask. There are a lot of owners of all of vehicles with excellent as well as horrible ownership experiences).
…the worst of it, however, are those “reviewers” who were only able to find fault with the near $40k price tag of an Equinox Premier in comparison to a CR-V EX or RAV XLE? Geeze, people… and you call yourselves “automotive journalists”? Perform your job properly and thoroughly and have a clue!
I certainly KNOW what I paid $35k for (before taxes, and fees, of course!).

It’s hard to say
