2020 Cadillac CT5 Spy Shots Show More Escala Concept Influence

Cadillac plans for a waterfall of new product in the next few years, and the slew of new vehicles will include two brand-new sedans: the CT5 and either a CT4 or CT3. We’ll likely see the 2020 Cadillac CT5 first, judging by the multiple rounds of spy shots making their way to the internet.
Indeed, the Cadillac CT5 was spied again during snowy cold-weather testing, and the influence from the Escala concept is front and center. The overall shape of Cadillac’s new sedan features a sloping fastback profile. In fact, we may even see the CT5 adopt a liftback style like the Escala as well.
At the front, squinty headlights will more than likely take a more horizontal approach, also akin to the Escala. We’re not sure why this tester consistently boasts a fake hood scoop, but it could indicate there’s a more powerful engine under the hood—perhaps Cadillac’s forthcoming 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine.
The rear is more of mystery, and camouflage artists have done their best to make it look like a Kia Stinger or Dodge Charger with a fake headlight piece stretching across the rear. The real taillights will also likely dart inward like the Escala concept for a new take on the brand’s vertical strip design.
A Cadillac CT5 debut is likely a year away as we know Cadillac will show the 2019 Cadillac XT4 crossover this year as its sole new product. We should see more Cadillacs start to fill out the brand’s lineup next year with a new vehicle launch every six months into early next decade.

I cannot wait for the refreshed Escalade…. and the XT6.
This model needs to be high quality and differentiated if it is going to stand out from the crowd. The ATS and current CTS fell short, in part due to quality and sizing. Falling back to a tweener strategy, like the first two generations of the CTS, should work well. Offer more car for similar or less money. Position CT5 between the 3 and the 5 Series, price it like a 3 Series. CT6 is positioned between the 5 and the 7 Series, but priced like a 5 Series. Some people may not like the strategy, but there needs to be a value proposition to get buyers into dealerships.
For the CT5, a sportback would be awesome. The design is attractive and trendy, and you offer more usability over the 3 and 5 Series traditional trunk layouts. For powertrains, I said this for the XT4, but I would like to see the 2.0T be highly revised for more refinement and power. 0-60 in the 5.5 second range, as the base. Above that, scrap the 3.6 and offer the 3.0TT with around 400hp as a Vsport with 0-60 in the 4.5 second range. And later, the much anticipated V model with a 0-60 in the 3.5 second range.
If design, both interior and exterior, stick close to Escala, the car will be a knock out. It will all come down to execution, refinement, and value.
Why does Cadillac need to have Tweener models but the other manufacturers do not? How about Cadillac offers products with real interiors and engines. The 3.6 HFV6 is a great engine but a complete joke when compared to the competition. Cadillac is trying to go to war especially against the Big three with a Parts Bin engine. They refuse to shove the 3.0TT in the ATS and CTS why?
I said that the ATS was waaaaaay too small from the first second it came out. Why would I a Monday Morning Quarterback realize this right away but somehow GM was taken by surprise? The Gauge Clusters in Cadillacs are complete garbage. Nobody can even argue that. Chevy has better Gauge Clusters. Cadillac got the rides correct but then gave up on the interiors. The ATS interior is not good at all and cramped as hell. The CTS Vsport is a hell of a package performance wise but for some idiotic reason it refuses to add an AWD option…Craziness. You cannot get the Magnetic Ride Control on the ATS if you want AWD…Whaaaat? It’s choices like these why they aren’t taken completely serious in the Market. You cannot charge the same as the Big Three but offer less.
Make better product and get more sales. It is so simple. It worked for Audi so why would it not work for Cadillac? We need to stop making excuses for them simply because we are huge GM fans.
I completely agree with these points. Cadillac gets all the underpinnings perfect, particularly in the CTS Vsport, then falls flat with materials quality and options. There are so many contingencies and limitations as to the options you can get on a Cadillac, like AWD and MRC. Give buyers the options or just give them it all.
The reason I advocate for Cadillac needing a tweener model is to pull buyers. They were too late with ATS compared to BMW, Audi, and MB with their respective offerings. The sedan market classes are too saturated. A tweener strategy helps Cadillac to create its own classes or take on two classes with one offering. It just sets them apart better. Also, it worked for the first two CTS models and the current CT6. You can’t argue with results.
My wife’s ATS Premium 2.0T is an ATS4 (all wheel drive) with magnetic ride. It has the beautiful brown and titanium interior and white exterior. It handles better than just about anything that I’ve driven. She’s 5’11 and it’s the perfect size for her. The digital gauges look great, I mean of course without the car on you’re just going to see a black screen. The car is loaded with every option and it’s fun to drive. We added a ZZ performance intake and KPE exhaust and it sounds amazing. I personally think it looks much better than your run of the mill 3 series. It’s a great car, I think you’re being a little too critical but you’re entitled to your opinion.
Hard to tell under the camo, but I think it’s going to be bland as hell.
Looks like China struck again.
General Motors should just change their name to China Motors.
Looks like the camo is doing it’s job; fooling idiots into thinking the car is something it’s not.
Are we sure this is CT5 and not CT3? I would have desired the CT5 would be a bit bigger… From the quarter rear it makes me think of a shortened Opel Insignia / Buick Regal. I’m also not a fan of liftgates… when you have a low garage, you can never open the trunk. And the tiny back door seems like half the length of the front door… The rear tires also seem much smaller than the 275s I have standard on my CTS. I had the 2014 CTS as the replacement for my former STS, but this is too much downsizing for me, it really looks smaller than e.g. a Malibu. Guess I’ll have to move up to the CT6 when my lease is over. I cannot imagine this car would give more interior space as compared to the current generation.
One VERY positive thing however: horizontal tail pipes are back ! Instead of those horrible vertical 2018 CTS exhausts. And brakes still seem to be Brembo, that’s also positive.
So my opinion: I think engineering-wise it will be a fantastic offering but size-wise too small and too many similarities to Malibu / Regal.
I hate articles that do not include pictures or illustrations which force the reader to do Google searches of potential pictures of the vehicle in question as how difficult could it be to paste a couple of pictures; but the real question that should be asked about Cadillac’s CT5 is whether this vehicle features a fuel cell or a batter powered electric motor with the debate being if it’s a fuel cell is the use of gasoline a viable option given that it’s difficult to fine Hydrogen fuel.
You see that link at the bottom of the article clearly stating “spy shots”? Click it.
No hating required. Just some reading on your part.
Why cant they do like they did with the pick ups? Add interior and trunk space ands lose a couple of hundred pounds without adding much to the overall dimensions. To that you add refined engines and interior to met and or beat the competition. Finally you undercut their price by a few grands and then Caddy may actually become a serious player in the luxury field. From there you work on again becoming a leader rather than a follower. I know it’s been many decades since that has happened but I believe it can happen again. I know it may take a few years and I may not be around to see it because I am old, but I still believe it can happen with the right investments and mindset.
“Finally you undercut their price by a few grands and then Caddy may actually become a serious player in the luxury field.”
That’s a contradiction. You can’t undercut your way in luxury products.
When you are playing catch up and you have had a suspect reputation for the past thirty years,You can come out and expect to go head to head in pricing. Even if Caddy comes out with superior products across the board the still have the baggage of their past to overcome. Perhaps a few grands was a bit much but until their reputation is reestablished the have to offer something that get the attention of the fence setters.
In my reply I said you can go head to head in pricing. I would like to correct tha to say you can’t go head to head for the reasons I stated.
Hmm. Is this a hatch in the rear?
The show car was a hatch and the lines appear similar.
It is not like GM would not consider production as the new Buick is a hatch.
This would be a way to make more utility with sedans.
People on here need to wait what the actual model will look like. The spy shots is nothing to get excited about. When the very first CT6 prototype came out, it was under a different body shell at first. You will see the actual prototype closer to reveal under the camouflage.
