It’s natural to think that one needs to spend a lot of money on a good vehicle and top-shelf parts in order to compete in motorsports, but that’s not always the case. Sure, a bigger budget will almost always make you more competitive, but that doesn’t mean it’s required.
This beastly 1989 GMC rock crawler is proof of that.
Robert, the builder and owner of this truck, pieced the project together with mostly factory parts, save for the Off-Road Design Doubler transfer case. In addition to that, this GMC square body pickup utilizes a throttle body fuel-injected (TBI) 350 V8 matted to a 4-speed transmission, a GM 14-bolt rear, factory 4.10 gears, factory front and rear lockers, and massive 41.5-inch tires. Robert also shortened the wheel base of the pickup truck from 160 inches to about 119.
Video host Dave Chappelle (not the comedian) claims this truck has just about the best factory all-wheel-drive system one can have. We don’t know enough to be able to confirm or deny that, but Robert claims that nothing has failed yet – and as they say, the proof is in the pudding.
