Opel earned its 17th Golden Steering Wheel (Goldenes Lenkard) award at the 2017 Golden Steering Wheel Awards as the Ampera-e was recognized for its best-in-class electric range and technological offerings.
“With its unrivalled electric range, the Opel Ampera-e shows just how suitable for everyday use a pure electric car can be,” said Opel Managing Director Engineering Christian Müller, who attended the ceremony and accepted the award on the automaker’s behalf. “This internationally recognized award proves that our vehicle concept is appreciated by experts and customers alike.”
Unfortunately, the luster of this trophy is dulled a bit by the fact that GM lost $12,000 for every Ampera-e sold. So while the car may be a hit with consumers and pundits, it’s been far from a business success.
That’s not to take away from Opel’s efforts, though; as we mentioned, this is the outfit’s 17th Golding Steering Wheel award in 40 years, which is a heck of a record.
Over the last four decades, the following Opel vehicles have won a Golden Steering Wheel award:
- 1978 – Senator A
- 1979 – Kadett D
- 1981 – Ascona C
- 1982 – Corsa A
