The GM Authority Take
Trax sales fell significantly more than the segment average in December, placing the model in fifth place within its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, behind the Jeep Compass (see Jeep Compass sales), the Buick Encore, which shares the Trax’s platform (see Buick Encore sales), Honda HR-V, and Jeep Renegade (see Jeep Renegade sales). The Trax did outsell the Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-3 (see Mazda CX-3 sales), Fiat 500X (see Fiat 500X sales) and Nissan Juke.
The Trax’s 18 percent drop in December sales volume is disappointing given that the model saw a greater sales decrease than the 8 percent contraction seen by the segment during a time when crossover popularity is on the rise. We attribute the Trax’s lackluster December sales performance to the following factors:
- The growing popularity of the recently-redesigned Jeep Compass and Toyota C-HR, which are gaining sales at the expense of other segment rivals, and
- Consumer movement towards larger, compact-sized crossovers, which saw sales grow 5 percent in December
Going forward, we expect Trax sales volume to continue being threatened by newer segment rivals, including the Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V and Toyota CH-R, as well as the upcoming Nissan Rogue Sport, Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Kona, until Chevy completely overhauls (redesigns and reengineers) the model.

About Chevrolet Trax
The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover. It slots below the Equinox as Chevrolet’s smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo and Buick Encore. The model was Chevrolet’s first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space and the second (after the Nissan Juke) to launch in its segment in the U.S. market.
Having launched for the 2015 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, the replacement of the LTZ trim by the new range-topping Premier model, revised interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more. The 2018 Chevy Trax represents the fourth model year of the first-generation Trax and receives several changes including three new exterior colors, a new Trax Redline Edition model, and several equipment-level changes.
The Trax is built at two assembly plants — the GM Bupyeong factory operated by GM Korea and the GM San Luis Potosi factory operated by GM Mexico. The vehicle is called the Chevrolet Tracker in some markets, including South America and Russia.

Trax is a disappointment that was never planned for US sale. Trax vs Encore send a bad GM message: Buick means quality while Chevrolet provides an uninspired messy vehicle.
Thankfully, this isn’t a problem for other Chevrolet products that share platforms with Buick but is a problem as The Bowtie tries to reinvigorate it’s formerly damaged image.
FCA Jeep produces two exciting products and GM can, too.
Surprised no one bought Ecosport?
Chevrolet needs to put the 2.0 turbo in the thing. And what is a Redline edition other than black wheels and red marks. Put some fun in it if you want to call something Redline. Geez!
Dropping the LTG 250 horsepower 2.0L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo won’t happen; but given how anemic it’s 1.4L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo which makes just 138 hp, it’s a miracle that Chevy can get over 6,000 buyers as even the LWC 1.6L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo making 200 hp (from the Buick Cascada) would be a big jump in performance although another viable alternative would be 1.6L turbo-diesel that is an option in both the Chevy Equinox and Cruze as it’s 240 lb-ft of torque could transform the personality of the Chevy Trax.
Whatever liter it takes to get about 200 HP will work. And add a console for some storage!!! The Buick Encore is practically the same vehicle and its sells are high. So you Chevy has a cute vehicle, it just needs to differentiate it somehow. HP and interior… then again if Buick were to add a 200 HP engine and an all-terrain look…………….well Chevy could cancel the Trax.
I had one for a week as a loaner a month ago. It looks like a shoe (and an old one at that) and drives like a roller skate. Tall, narrow and tippy feeling. Why on earth would any sane person consider this over a Mazda CX-3 especially, but any other competitor? I was never more happy to get my Cruze Hatch back!
