The GM Authority Take
After a runaway August, a normalized September, a healthy jump in October, and an even bigger jump in November, Impala sales dropped faster than the segment average in December. Even so, the Impala was still the best-selling car in its segment during the month, ahead of the Dodge Charger by 1,371 units in second place (see Dodge Charger sales) and Chrysler 300 by 2,475 units in third place (see Chrysler 300 sales). The Impala also finished ahead of the Nissan Maxima in fourth, Ford Taurus in fifth and Toyota Avalon in sixth. The Kia Cadenza came in seventh, the Hyundai Azera in eighth, and the Volkswagen CC in ninth (and last) place. Both the Hyundai and VW have been discontinued.
We attribute the Impala’s decent December sales performance to the following factors:
- A competitive model that represents an attractive overall package
- Attractive incentives on existing inventory units (see 2017 Impala incentives for December and 2018 Impala incentives for December)
- Potential increases in deliveries to fleet customers

- We have included the Nissan Maxima and the discontinued Volkswagen CC in the report, since both models carry similar pricing structures to vehicles in the mainstream full-size sedan segment. However, the Maxima and CC are not full-size sedans. Instead, they are midsize sedans with a greater amount of premium content over the similarly-sized Nissan Altima and Volkswagen Passat, respectively.
The full-size mainstream sedan segment contracted 12.5 percent in December and 11 percent during the complete 2017 calendar year. The development is representative of the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics in which buyers are favoring CUVs and SUVs over other model types, with sedan sales suffering the most.
About Chevrolet Impala
The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan. It is the biggest Chevrolet sedan currently offered, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic, compact Chevrolet Cruze and midsize Chevrolet Malibu.
The current model was introduced for the 2014 model year and represents the tenth generation of the storied Impala nameplate. It rides on the GM Super Epsilon platform shared with the second-generation Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS.
Compared to its ninth-generation predecessor, the tenth-gen Impala is an all-new vehicle that is larger, sleeker and more modern. Chevrolet modified its strategy for the new model, as the ninth-gen model was sold to rental fleets in significant quantities, while the tenth-gen is primarily entended for purchase by consumers at the retail level. This condition alone has resulted in a strategic decrease in sales of the current model.
Going forward, it is unclear whether the Impala will live on to see a next, 11th generation, as comments by GM executives have left the vehicle’s future in limbo, mostly as a result of a change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics that is beginning to favor crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of sedans.
The Chevrolet Impala is built at the GM Detroit-Hamtramck factory in Michigan operated by GM USA as well as the GM Oshawa factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada.

Comments
That is a shame. The Impala is such a great car too. I hope they don’t discontinue it as the Impala is the best selling full size sedan in the United States. It would be illogical to give up their spot to other competitors when they are number one.
I doubt they will. With 75k Impalas sold, plus Lacrosse and XTS, they have enough volume to maximize an assembly line and make good profits from it.
If they are redoing the Avalon and keeping it around, then there should be room for Impala to carry on in the large car segment with some massaged bodywork. That new front end on the Avalon is doing it no favors. The Impala is a fantastic car and can be had for such a great deal most of the time. If Chevy would add the 9 speed, and AWD option, it would make it that much better. A ttV6 and handling package would make it phenomenal. Love the Impala.
Thank you I could not have said it better. I just hope someone at GM reads this and pull their head out and do justice for the Impala.
Chevrolet’s Impala is a great value car.. Chevy should do what FCA is doing and go retro before being replaced with a ZEV, drop the 455 horsepower LT1 6.2L V8 in the Chevy Impala and restore the Chevelle name to it.
Only a crazy idiot would drop a car that leads it category.
A Volt-ish Impala (better mileage) married to sleek new design wouldn’t suck.
The Impala needs to stay at least for one more revamp. If anything the LaCrosse or the XTS should be axed first. The Azera is gone and the Taurus is on life support. The Maxima isn’t a full sized car so that leaves the redesigned Avalon and the Kia Cadenza as the only other options left. Enjoy them while you can because in not so many years we are all going to be forced into buying little egg shaped CUV’s with electric drivetrains that you won’t even be able to drive. Just sad!
I agree they should keep the Impala with the upgrades that MRB suggested. they need to dump the XTS move the XT6 to the size of the Escala and use the existing XT6 as the Lacross. They should also change the name of the Lacross to ELECTRA.
it’s only down 24% from last month. Overall the Impala sells pretty damn good for the year for a full size sedan. At the Full size sedan price, many consumers start to entertain the CUV and SUV, if they are not hell bent on having a car.
What’s wild is how Dodge and Chrysler are selling so many of those Chargers and 300’s on that archaic platform. Pretty impressive.
My guess in Dodges case it would be cur throat prices and V8 muscles. Chrysler not quite sure but the V8 and rear wheel drive still appeal to quiete a few people.
GM or its Dealers are spending no advertising money on the Impala. Its a great vehicle with lots of awards that GM isn’t using. I bet if Elon Musk had this vehicle it would sell 15,000 a month. I don’t under stand GM P/R Dept. I get 2 Auto News video’s a day Monday – Friday with GM being the largest in America gets the least product news compared to other Auto Manufacturers. We won’t see any news wires like Reuters, AP or MarketWatch about 5000 Bolts being sold in S Korea.
GM keep the Impala I started with a new 1959 and now have a 2015 LT2 love it.
I own two ’14 Impala 2LTZs and my Chevrolet dealer just told me today that GM is killing off the Impala after the 2018 model year. I found this out when I was servicing one of my ’14 Impalas today. From what I understand, GM just send out the information to their dealers. Is this true? I just posted to the Chevrolet forum about this, and want GM Authority to verify this and post on it, if is true.
