The GM Authority Take

Following a dismal November sales performance that was most likely caused by a shortage of inventory caused by the strike at the GM CAMI factory in Canada that produces most of the Equinox models for sale in the U.S., Chevy’s compact crossover managed a record December.

That places the Equinox ahead of most of its direct competitors, including the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape (see Ford Escape sales), Jeep Cherokee (see Jeep Cherokee sales), Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5 (see Mazda CX-5 sales), Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass (see Jeep Compass sales), Volkswagen Tiguan (see VW Tiguan sales), the Equinox’s platform mate – the GMC Terrain (see GMC Terrain sales), as well as the Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander.

We attribute the impressive sales performance to the following three factors:

  1. An all-new, competitive model that represents an attractive overall product
  2. Decent incentives to move existing inventory units, especially second-generation units
  3. A continuous change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics, where shoppers choose crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) over other vehicle types like sedans

About Chevrolet Equinox

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Redline Edition exterior - 2017 Chicago Auto Show 004

The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover. It slots above the Chevrolet Trax and below the Chevrolet Traverse. It will also be positioned below the rumored to be the future Chevrolet Blazer.

The first-generation Equinox ran from the 2005-2009 model years and was based on the first-generation Theta platform. The second-generation Equinox was offered from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. Both the first- and second-generation models were “tweeners”, in that they straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The third-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC TerrainChevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its two predecessors, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.

The third-generation, 2018 and newer Equinox features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.

The Chevrolet Equinox is built primarily at the GM CAMI factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada. Two GM Mexico facilities – GM San Luis Potosi and GM Ramos Arizpe – also share in producing the vehicle for North America.

  1. The two top foreign CUV brands had loss of sales between 2016 and 2017, while the more expensive and better designed Equinox increased sales. And the Equinox will have a longer useful life and better resale. So the Equinox is a big winner for GM, with only the local Silverado sales beating it. But when will GM add a EREV/hybrid version?

    1. Likely in 2022 when the old Volt body style ends production and they introduce its replacement.

  2. I wondered what happened to rogue? Fleets doing the sale?

  3. Combined Equinox/Terrain beat CR-V in sales…neat

    1. Equinox and Terrain also had supply issues due to a shut down at the Ontario plant (Equinox) and not all models being available the full year due to this being a new vehicle.

Rav 4 sales are insanely high. It outsold the Camry most months this year. Not sure if Chevrolet can beat the Rav4 sales with just the Equinox (not counting Terrain), but I think they can easily crack 310,000 units in 2018. Terrain may flirt with 95,000 units.

It’s great to see Chevrolet in the “big 5” in this rapidly expanding segment. The Equinox is a smash hit for Chevrolet, and I’m sure their dealers are very happy about that.

  4. While I’m not pleased to so these things outselling cars it is good to see the Nox doing well overall.

  5. For this class of car I think GM / Chevy did a good job.

  6. Not much wrong with this vehicle–seriously. Other than steep price, relatively poor mileage with 2.0 Turbo (gets only marginally better mileage than 3.0 TT in my CT6), poor placement of light switch causing frequent activation by knee when exiting, tinny sounding door on closure and vibrating Bose speakers that do not tolerate bass and anything above moderate volume.

Had vehicle since July and only back for an oil change and closing in on 7,000 miles. Rides and handles extremely well and has plenty of room. Very attractive vehicle inside and out!

    1. Do they offer discounts yet? The Premier models are very pricey. The CR-V is dirt cheap by comparison, but it doesn’t come with a reasonably powerful engine or a diesel.

Is yours a diesel or a gas?

I remember Car and Driver being so impressed with the 2.0T model Equinox that they drew comparisons to the Audi Q5. I’ve only driven the base 1.5T motor, but I was VERY impressed with it. It really is a great vehicle with very attractive styling.

  7. Gas engine. Even though I’ve been disappointed with mileage, I’ve been more than happy with the performance! Vehicle moves smartly.

They have been offering $500 off for sometime.

Price is definitely an issue. My Premier stickered for >$41K.

Clarification on Bose speakers. Don’t believe it is speaker issue but mounting or poor mounting in the lower door panel. Increased bass or volume causes the whole lower door panel to vibrate! No apparent distortion from speaker itself.
