The GM Authority Take

Cruze sales continued their unfavorable trend in December, with the model seeing one of the highest year-over-year slumps in its segment during the month.

The performance places the Cruze in fifth place in its competitive set in terms of U.S. December sales volume, behind the Honda Civic in first, Hyundai Elantra in second, Toyota Corolla in third, and Nissan Sentra in fourth. The Cruze outsold the remaining segment contenders including the Volkswagen Jetta and Golf family (which accounted for a combined 11,419 sales), Ford Focus, Subaru Impreza, Kia Forte, Mazda3, Mitsubishi Lancer, and the now-discontinued Dodge Dart.

We attribute the Cruze’s slumping December sales performance to the following factors:

  1. An ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks
  2. An extremely strong launch for and market reaction to the new Honda Civic and Subaru Impreza
  3. Aggressive sales tactics for Nissan Sentra and Hyundai Elantra, a circumstance that we imagine is led by high incentives and fleet sales
  4. Product-related issues for the Cruze, including it being the only model in the segment that can’t be equipped with a roof rack (without drilling into the vehicle’s roof), not offering all-wheel-drive or a performance variant

About Chevrolet Cruze

2018 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback and Sedan Redline editions

The Chevrolet Cruze is a range of compact passenger cars currently consisting of a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. It slots above the Chevrolet Spark city car and subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and below the midsize Chevrolet Malibu and full-size Chevrolet Impala.

The current model was introduced for the 2016 model year and represents the second generation of the Cruze nameplate. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Volt and Buick Verano (in China).

Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen model is an all-new vehicle that is slightly larger, sleeker and more modern. The first-generation Cruze family was produced in sedan, hatchback, and wagon body styles, but only the sedan was available in North America. By comparison, the second-generation model is available as a sedan and hatchback. Though a wagon variant of the second-gen model was never produced, the hatchback model was made available in North America.

The Chevrolet Cruze sedan is built by GM USA at the GM Lordstown factory while the Cruze hatchback is assembled by GM Mexico at the GM Ramos Arizpe factory.

  1. Elantra in 3rd?? According to the numbers above, it should be 2nd…

    1. Elantra is second. The numbers are correct, the wording wasn’t.

Impressive that the Elantra beat out the Corolla, isn’t it?

      1. In the NY metro area Elektra is EVERYWHERE! I was a big fan of the previous gen quirky fluid design, but consider the current model ho hum with numb handling.
Civic and Cruze are by far the best rides in regards to handling, lack of road noise.
I rent often and, I know that people with laugh, but Dart was my favorite compact ride. It offered the most well-composed ride in the class and I liked the duel clutch tranny.

        1. Not surprising that the Elantra is selling so well. They are selling base SE automatics for 14995, SEL’s for 15995 and Special Editions for 16995 at two seperate dealers within 50 miles of me. And those are 2018 models. Meanwhile the 2018 Cruze is window stickered for 17995 for LS automatics or LT stick with no options. LT automatics are 18995 or 19495 with convenience package and the hatch versions are more still.

Having a Honda badge and full endorsement from C&D sells the Civic and cheap prices are selling the Elantra and Nissan products.

        2. I imagine gay readers Googling to find out what a ‘duel clutch tranny’ is all about.

  4. GM’s strategy of reducing fleet sales hit directly the Cruze. And it needs a new design, inside and out, and new prices.

    Reply
    1. It also needs a defeat switch for stop/start, revised styling, better interior materials, a performance model and optional higher power engine option and better pricing and option package structure. And GM needs to quit forcing customers into top pricey trim levels to get simple things like a leather steering wheel or safety features that other brands are including in the cheaper priced models.

  5. It’s got great reviews, including CR.

I have to believe it comes down to the exterior styling. Any “car guy” I talk to feels it was a step backwards and is less attractive than the first gen Cruze. It looks very last-gen Hyundai to me.

Just my opinion, but I think that is the #1 problem.

    1. I agree, the First Generation Cruze looked better, but the current Cruze looks just as “good” as it’s compact car competition.
The Civic, Focus, Elantra, and Corolla are all kinda lack luster in style.

      Reply
    2. Completely agree. The 1st Cruze just needed a face lift. The car’s profile looked like a small BMW from the side and back. And that’s what made it so sought after IMO.

The new Cruze looks awful in comparison. Though the other Cruze was Korean designed I believe, it Looked German/American. This new Cruze actually looks Korean.

      1. Completely agree with the German/BMW design aesthetics. The silhouette was perfect. The front overhang minimal for a FWD car. With LTZ trim and RS package, it had a very upscale appearance for a compact car, easily the most premium and sporty of all competition. Now it looks like an appliance in sedan form.

Hatchback looks better, definitely. But as often happens, hatchback was lopped shorter than sedan, so although the hatch is more flexible in carrying odd sized items with rear seats folded, with rear seats in place the hatch actually has less cargo room for TYPICAL items that someone would carry. I’m not going by “cu ft specifications”, I’m going by side-by-side real world comparison in person. If you had 4 people to take on a trip, the sedan would haul their luggage and bags better. If you needed to bring home $200 of groceries to feed your family, the sedan has a lot more floor area in the trunk. Good luck stacking your eggs on top of your waffles on top of your cereal on top of your bacon on top of your ground beef so you can use all 22.7 cu ft of space. That’s a game of Jenga I’m not interested in playing. I’m NOT anti hatch, I own a Volt. I can just appreciate the value of having floor area, and get frustrated when hatches get chopped too short, which cuts down on their practicality.

  6. In this segment, “PRICE” is KING. The Elantra walks all over the Cruze, in terms of price and standard equipment.

    Reply
    1. Or you could of just probably said all Hyundai/Kia products walks all over GM products in terms of value and standard equipment.

  7. Not surprised at all. The cruze is officially dead. GM failed the 1st gen and continued to fail with its second generation. First gen was way to under powered for such a heavy car, and lets not mention the list of recalls and bulletins. The second gen is no better. GM needs a performance division for its smaller vehicles of it has any hope of competing in today’s market, or better yet give the vehicles you’re producing the actual power they deserve and need to operate. I own a 2012 first gen and I personally will never buy another cruze after my last 3.5 years with it. At the end of the day though, GM does not care about what its customers want to see, they just want to continue “updating” old designs and making them worse.
