The GM Authority Take
The XT5’s December sales performance places it in second place in its segment, significantly behind the Lexus RX. The XT5 did, however, outsell the Acura MDX and Lincoln MKX (see Lincoln MKX sales), which will be relaunched as the Lincoln Nautilus for the 2019 model year, with a few additional changes.
We posit that the XT5’s sales volume remains healthy due to a competitive product offering as well as the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks. However, the product saw a higher sales volume drop than the Lexus RX – its chief rival. Not only that, but the Lexus also outsold the XT5 by more than a two-to-one ratio.

About Cadillac XT5
The Cadillac XT5 is a midsize crossover that replaced the Cadillac SRX. Currently the only crossover in the Cadillac lineup, the vehicle will soon be flanked by a smaller Cadillac XT4 and a larger crossover believed to be the Cadillac XT6.
Currently in its first generation, the XT5 was introduced for the 2017 model year. The vehicle is based on the regular-length wheelbase variant of the GM C1 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Acadia and upcoming, future Chevrolet Blazer. A longer-wheelbase variant of the same platform underpins the second-gen Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave.
For the 2018 model year, the XT5 gets several new exterior colors, a new “base” trim level that offers all-wheel-drive, the Rear Seat Reminder technology, and various new accessories.
For North American markets, the Cadillac XT5 is built exclusively at the GM Spring Hill factory in Tennessee operated by GM USA. For the Chinese market, the vehicle is built at the Cadillac China Jinqiao factory operated by GM China.

Lexus holds one advantage. They also do not sell similar models like a Acadia, Traverse and Enclave. While two are different in size they draw cross shopping and sales.
Also the XT5 is a great vehicle but for the added money they need their own version of the 3.6 or the 3.0 Turbo to better justify the price difference.
I also see the lack of styling change in play here too. The new one is the last of the old styling and does not stand out in a segment people want to stand out. I expect a refresh is not far out to address that.
But let’s face it they need a different engine and suspension than my Denali to justify the added cost. I just paid $20k less for a fully loaded Denali with the same engine and same shocks and struts.
It’s clear you’re an informed GM follower, but you’re gravely mistaken on this one.
The XT5 is rarely cross shopped with other crossovers from GM brands… so that argument doesn’t hold up. I consult on these these very topics globally, and the customer profiles are very different. Your typical Acadia buyer is not looking at the XT5, and can’t exactly budget it either.
The scenario you outline (knowing about the platform sharing and other product similarities between the Acadia and XT5) doesn’t exist in mass quantities in the real world… only the GM followers know that, and they account for a small percentage of overall buyers of GM vehicles. Your scenario is what we call a man says example. It’s a needle in a haystack.
Lexus simply sells better on image and reputation. Their dealer network and marketing are also strong. This is where they hold an advantage over Cadillac. The RX started this segment 15 years ago… and they’ve kept the formula consistent. Cadillac has been all over the map with the SRX and XT5, as well as a brand. This has real, definitive impact on sales via customer perception.
Well I don’t necessarily agree with the customer doesn’t know the difference. If you sit and truly listen to the buyer, and especially the younger buyer. I don’t keep up with the platform naming but I know when I’m getting a 3.6 v6 the same as in a Canyon. and front wheel drive the same as in Acadia. I owned the 2005 SRX RWD AWD 140,000 miles. When it was time to replace, it wasn’t with the FWD SRX simply because my mother in laws 2009 Enclave had so much trouble. ( steering gear, Timing chains Etc. at 78,000 miles. ) We bought a 2015 Canyon to get RWD AWD. And we also have plenty of money to pay cash for the Cadillac if it were any better than the other options. We replaced our 2004 CTS with a 2014 ATS RWD AWD. I’m so curious on how you collect your data to back up that scenario.
Did you ever say you had an issue with a GM product.
To who. A dealer or GM. And the answer is yes both. I had one complaint in 34 years back in 2016 where a dealer replaced a fuel sender also in 2009 Enclave, after the replacement the gauge was faulty and not trustworthy. When the Service manager would not replace the sender again and try another, I called GM. GM and I were lied to by 1 service manager. I replaced the fuel sender and it has been working great for 1.5 years. After 6+ years of writing GM Executives, and the dealer. I received an email from the dealer CFO. 6 years
Good God man You complain in every thread and nearly every post.
We get the point!
If I were a GM executive I would ignore you too.
I find it odd you have had more issues that 10 people combined and you appear to never get any help.
I have had over 30 plus GM cars in the family and only one major issue a cam in a 77 Buick that was not covered. Anything else was taken care of by GM in or out of warranty.
I am not going to judge but it is just an observation we are seeing you may want to consider.
As they say in politics the optics are not good.
Thanks for noticing Scott3, over 30+ GM cars only 1 issue. ” WOW ” That’s great. I’m curious what the vehicles were and the average mileage. Also I would like to know where you had any problem fixed by GM out of warranty because I am going to buy my next 3 GM cars from them. Right after they fix the transmission shift in my 15 Canyon and the rear end leak in my 14 ATS. Seriously 30 cars 1 issue. Just my 82 Olds 5.7 diesel Fuel pumps, my 82 Silverado 6.2 diesel, fuel pumps, cracked heads and 6 transmissions, my 2002 Rendezvous 3.4 head gaskets and transfer case, man there isn’t enough time or space here for me to list them all. Again only 1 issue 30 cars. go buy a lottery ticket tonight.
I’m not going to judge but its just an observation that very few people here are willing to prove anything they are saying.
As they say in politics the optics are not good.
The truth is they are cross shopped often as they are often in the same show rooms.
Before we bought the Denali we got in the XT5 in the same show room.
Often in a GMC dealer they also have the Buick too.
Might also note most reviews of each also cover the relationship between the models and often point out that the Densli is a bargain compared to the XT5 if you can do without the extra bling.
I am not expressing option I just spent the time money digging into this.
Also add to it the fact the incentives on the GMC has moved a ton of Acadias.
The Acadia sales have increased with the new size and alone sell as many a Lexus.
I do agree Lexus has a solid image but that is also why I believe GMC needs to focus on the details and do better.
The Denali loaded is a viable option with much the very same parts that can be had for $20,000 less.
It simply comes down to the fact the XT 5 just has not enough to justify the price difference.
I know as I just paid $37k for a new Denali with every option less the entertainment system.
If what they offer is not enough to overcome a Denali what have they got for Lexus?
This is an example of the pre JND products and the problem they have faced for decades. Let see if JDN can address this as I think he understands this clearly and we should see 5ne changes soon.
I would love to know where you found a new Denali for 37k. Im not trying to be sarcastic, but there’s got to be more to that story.
Not really.
GM had near $10k in incentives this month on new 2017 models.
Then I waited this month to get my GM money topped off from my GM card. Then the dealer came off a little more and we got the price down to I will round it up to $38K to be closer to the final amount.
The deals are still on but the inventory is about gone accept for the odd fwd models.
We had wanted one but I waited them out since the dealers were sitting on a bunch of 17 models and I knew the top off money was coming. It all lined up three weeks ago.
I had not planned on buying but when it all worked out I could not pass on the deal.
I learned about the big discounts on the 16 models last year when truck shopping and we always get the GM top off in a January.
I just watched inventory and knew who had what I wanted.
To be honest I was proud to pull this one off. I have had some good deals but never this good.
Check the GMC web site and they are advertising 18% off but most dealers will do more. Our GM money was jus $2100 since I used part of it earlier this year on my truck.
I saw no need to wait on a 18 as they really changed little.
We even got the Constantly Variable Suspension that is hard to find.
I hated to see our Terrain go but it was what the wife wanted and the price was too good to pass up on a new Denali with 8 miles.
So a 2017 Terrain Denali. I’m still not sure what Denali you got for 37K. And that’s after the CC cash back in which you use for GM, and I use my Wells Fargo for Vacation. Does that include tax or license.
I am not going to judge but it is just an observation we are seeing you may want to consider.
As they say in politics the optics are not good.
Acadia Denali.
You should observe better
Owner now I think I can see why you have so many issues.
We have been holding a discussion on the XT5 and comparing the Acadia Denali that I stated I purchased. You know we are comparing apples to apples here.
Henry got it.
Had to give you a thumbs up on that one, you got me there. Enclave, Acadia, Traverse, and XT5, got it. So you going to drive that Acadia Denali 35,500 miles so its owner issue free also, or you going to try 140,000 like my old 05 SRX issue free. “O” that’s right I put a transfer case chain in that also at 78,000 miles. And by the way 3 other people I know personally had them go within 2,000 miles of that.
But you got me there
I generally keep cars 100k to 120k miles.
The vehicl3 I just sold was one of the lowest mileage at miles.
It is for sale and has been trouble free. It may serve you well.
Sorry but you cry of GM trouble is almost as bad as “ Last Summer At Band Camp” was in the movie American Pie.
We get it you are unhappy but you need to move on. If needed from GM if it is that bad. Took one Ford with bad heads for me go back to GM.
Who said I was unhappy. I’m not unhappy. I’m truly sorry that the truth about the GM vehicles I have personally owned and driven bothers you that much. I am talking about my experiences. Maybe if I talk about my experiences and you talk about your experiences it won’t bother you so much. I am truly sorry the truth hurts sometimes.
The content does not bother me just the broken record of the same story over and over and over and over and over.
Scott3 you confuse me so much. You said the content doesn’t bother you. I thought the constant complaining bothered you, even though I am not complaining. It seems like your complaining over and over and over and over and over and over, about what you perceive as complaining. Your as bad as me stating the fact that GM is sorry to here that, and my satisfaction is important to them, over and over and over and over. Have you ever even owned a Cadillac, I have owned 5 and still own 3. Just saying, I thought we were talking Cadillac
Lexus holds another advantage. Customer service. Toyota just truly wants to help there customer. Not just there dealers, but there customers. Through there quality standards they simply don’t waste time placing blame or making excuses. They get to the root cause fix the problem and move on period. No mater how you ended up with the vehicle, they still made it, and want you to buy another.
The Lexus RX has better ride quality, and consumers feel that difference as soon as they test drive. Sad that Cadillac – former purveyor of “The Cadillac Ride” – would concede ride quality to anyone.
Agree
Lexus RX has mediocre brakes and steering, crank suspension. XT5 is a much more balanced vehicle.
Drew to the rescue, but wrong as always.
The RX has SOFTER ride over the XT5 that’s not necessarily better or worse. no one has ever complained about the ride quality of the XT5. This is a non issue that you’re making up due to your agenda of hating on everything taking place at Cadillac currently.
Have you driven any of the vehicles in question?
“Silent” wrote: “no one has ever complained about the ride quality of the XT5.”
Really? So you’ve talked to EVERY ONE of the people who ever rode in an XT5? And you KNOW that NOT ONE PERSON chose the RX over the XT5 because the RX has the more plush “Cadillac-like” (of the past) ride?
Once again you’ve made a statement that is clearly false or at least unprovable. I have not ridden in an XT5 but I have ridden in a second generation SRX, and I do complain about the ride quality in that car – it’s not worthy of a Cadillac, it’s about average for an SUV.
The professional reviewers state that the RX has better ride quality that the XT5, so I’ll take their word for it over yours. Yes softer equals better, when you are talking about the luxury segment. The RX outsells the XT5 by a wide margin, it also outsold the SRX by a wide margin. You can connect the dots as to which one is more “luxury” or you can remain obstinate in cheerleading Cadillac all the way to its extinction as a brand.
“Silent”, you are proof of the adage “It is better to remain SILENT and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt”.
What I think is great, but a bit odd, we think this, we think that. Get in one and drive it . Go to the dealer and drive one. I have driven both SRX and XT5 and do not have one in my garage. And as you say ” I can budget one”. This is what I think is the most odd. Cadillac- ” we make a great car and our customers say so” Me -” I have one of those great cars leaking in my garage”. Cadillac – ” we are sorry to here that, but its a 2014 with too many miles” me – “my 2004 CTS had 140,000 miles and that doesn’t leak.” Cadillac – ” were sorry but this and that” me – ” you simply can’t tell people who are having trouble with your great car, that you have a great car, you have to prove it”. If everyone at Cadillac knows how to do it, and why this is happening and that is happening. Does that mean they are deliberately trying to sell less vehicles. I know the XT5 sells great, but it is the only Cadillac SUV. And I want a Cadillac SUV a BMW X5 diesel high mileage, high mpg Cadillac, and when you want to go you go. Not a BMW of SUV’s Aa Cadillac of SUV’s. And yes I have driven one of those also.
While I have not ridden in the RX, I can say that the XT5 rides MUCH better than the X5, GLC and CTS. We purposely got the 18’s because they improved the ride so much over the larger wheel size.
Henry, the XT5 may ride well compared to those products, and that’s great. However, all reviews state that the RX has the best ride of its class. And it’s also the leading seller by a wide margin. Coincidence? I think not. Someone like “Silent” can claim that ride quality doesn’t matter to the luxury segment buyers, or that the XT5 ride quality is good enough, but the sales numbers say otherwise.
Ride quality used to be a hallmark of Cadillac, that’s back when it was the #1 selling luxury brand in the USA. Again, a coincidence? I think not. But the people who want to fantasize that they are “Speed Racer” in their Cadillacs don’t care about ride quality, and they don’t think anyone else should either. The RX sales numbers say that luxury SUV buyers do care about ride quality, IMO.
I am waiting for the XT4 this year as a replacement for a Chevy Equinox. The XT5 is bigger and more expensive than what I need.
We are also waiting for the XT4, but if it is FWD we will not buy one. The new 3.6 v6 or the 3.0 Diesel like the new Silverado. RWD/AWD
It will be FWD based. They couldn’t get VSS-R ready in time for the XT4 and no other rear drive GM platform currently supports it. So the XT4 will be a stop gap, like the XTS and XT5.
Well plan B and not a Cadillac. For the first time ever it mite not be GM. We’ll see
Variety is the spice of life and unfortunately there’s not much variety for Cadillac’s XT5, Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen is essentially the absentee Executive; one wonders how sales numbers might be if Cadillac offered an entry level XT5 equipped with the 255-275 hp LTG 2.0L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo, a high performance edition equipped with the 420 hp LF3 twin-turbo 3.6L DOHC-4v V6 or PHEV Hybrid developed for China.
Well, call it just my opinion, but I think the Lexus is ugly and has no class.
will the xt4/6 have the escala inspired design?
Unless someone owns one the facts claimed would fall on deaf ears .
I own a XT5 Premium Luxury AWD in Granite Gray Metallic w/ a black interior and traded in my 2012 SRX for it .
First it doesn’t compare withe an Acadia Denali at all , two different customer bases .
I’ve lived with mine for 7 months now and so far no problems , it is not a harsh ride nor is it soft the Halden AWD System plants the car to the road and mitigates road rash and our Michigan pot holes . The interior is a step above the SRX but the SRX was a sales success for Cadillac and was a good SUV . Sales numbers would bare this out as it was on the market in it’s second form since 2010 ( or 09 as a 10 ) .
It always stuns me how people will trash a vehicle they probably have never even driven let alone owned one for a time when you really get to know a vehicle .
Cadillac played the design of the XT5 close the SRX as the design is very similar especially from the side view , it’s more of an evolution instead of revolutionary ( minus the front and rear of course ) . Cadillac needs to stop using the same switches etc. on their vehicles . The gauge cluster in the XTS is a copy of the SRX except in Platinum versions , which is shown above . Window and mirror switches carry over as well as the steering wheel except for the air bag and Cadillac crest . Which again shows a new model with carry-over parts , but they work just fine in my experience .
Cadillac is already cutting costs as for the 2018 model the thigh extension for the driver is no longer available , and for tall folks that is nice to have .
CUE is much more responsive than before however for people that have trouble with an Android tablet will be unfamiliar with how the system works .
Lexus has the RX350 , RX450h and F-Sport models that competes w/ the XT5 and both in different trims and the quality is so well documented that it helps it hold the #1 spot . Cadillac needs to come out with some sort of : sporty ” model and a hybrid model to gain the top spot .
The bones of the two are the same. CX11 platform built in the same plant with the same engine and AWD unit.
The main differences are the interiors. The Cadillac is much nicer in trim and nicely laid out. It does have just a little less cargo space.
The Cadillac did get the same 9 speed as the Chevy vs the GMC 6 speed but the Cadillac is stuck with start stop and a electric shifter that is getting mixed reviews by those not use to them.
The Denali did also get the same ZF suspension as an option.
There is an overlap with the top end Acadia and the low to mid range XT5. Some variance but mechanically other than the 9 speed they are much the same.
The question is do you pay more for standard features in the Cadillsc or do you pay less and opt for more options with a lesser interior.
Both are great cars but for the added money Cadillac should offer more difference. They at the least should offer their own engines with more power or make the TT 3.0 the V6 for the model.
There is no excuse to charge that much more and give you the same engines as the GMC.
Don’t get me wrong I loved the XT5 but like with other Cadillacs GM forced them to the parts bin too much. I expect this to change from here forward. It will take time but they will fix this.
That was a good one. When we owned the 05 SRX Northstar it was a Cadillac look out away we go. At least in 05 apples to apples. O you should be more observant you misspelled Cadillac ( Cadillsc ). We are talking Cadillac here aren’t we.
I assume it blew head gaskets too lol!
Typo’s are typo’s. Get over it you have worse issues to worry about from what it appears.
Nope just that transfer case chain. Well I did replace all 4 of those electronic ride shocks and air compressor at 100,000 but those wear items are not that big of deal and it was my choice to get that ride. They were around 500.00 each though . Anything else you want to know about the vehicles I have owned. Just to be crystal clear Scott3 I LOVED THIS CAR, and WAS HAPPY WITH IT.
lifelongGMowner,
You’re dealing with a Chevrolet person who comes here to bash Cadillac owners. I think there must be a difficulty navigating to the Chevrolet section. Happens with others looking for the cheap seats from time to time. 😉
I reserve all judgement on the future of Cadillac until March 28 when the XT4 interior and propulsion are revealed. I personally consider the all new RDX and Q5 as benchmarks. The current XT5 is a stop gap and irrelevant in its current form, in my opinion.
Smart!
The changes will not be everything at once but I am looking for each new model to build to where they need to be.
you are right all Toyota’s are really UGLY .how could you twist a piece of metal and plastic and made it so ugly ,well they did .. as far as reliability why do all Toyota’s have warranty /service depts. we have owned all GM ‘s OLDS-Buick ,there have very minor repairs all reaching almost 200k . I don’t care what explanation or story, I will only purchase cars made in AMERICA by AMERICAN workers , that support AMERICA
I agree with all Toyotas are ugly in my opinion. Also I love the looks of most if not all GM now. I would like different engine, transmission, this that we all have different likes and dislikes. You can’t make everyone happy all the time. I would also like to say most of my GM vehicles have been great with minor repairs and all over 120,000. As far as Toyota reliability and long term owners well, enough said. Warranty Ha, we all used to sit around and say we don’t care if Dodge has 70.000 or 100.000 mile warranty they fall apart at 70,001 or 100,001 but our GM would last 200,000. And I to will only buy GM AMERICAN cars made by GM AMERICAN workers. However I am not sure of this anymore but at one time Toyota Camry was the most American labor car in America, but to me its still not American. That’s why its lifelongGMowner.
You may want to consider your “made in America by American” assessment. Just because it is made in American does not mean it is 100% American made.
People need to stop harping on American made this and that since that statement no longer holds fruit since the auto industry is a global economy.
O I am well aware. Our 2014 ATS has parts from all over the world. That’s why lately its getting harder to take the failure of the small things.
Now that Lexus has come out with the RX350L , 3 rows now , in a commercial I happened to see last night before the Grammy’s Lexus is stating this L version is ” part of the RX family of crossovers ” .
When I heard that I wonder if Cadillac with all of their XT”s coming out in addition of course withe XT5 , should they also group their models as part of a ” family ” or are they all going to look different enough to not group them together .
Not only was the ad decent showing a young family with a small child who thinks the RX is hers and not the parents , the timing of the commercial prior to the Grammy Awards was spot on .
Just a thought…………….
I remember thinking my parent’s Cadillac was mine when I was a little one. That’s when I became a Cadillac customer.
My dad had a 1958 Sedan Deville parked in the driveway when I was 12 -13 years old. I think maybe my grandpas old one or something. My best friend and I used to play with the cigarette lighters and electric windows until the battery was dead, woo was my dad mad! So that’s when I became a Cadillac customer. It took me 14 years to save enough to buy a 1996 Deville Northstar, and that was a great car for over 200,000 miles. My uncle also had a 1996 Deville with I think over 300,000 or close he owned it until 2010, great car. My mom still has her 1999 Deville that we fixed the head bolts in at 98,000 miles. I still have a 2004 CTS 140,000 and a 2014 ATS with the rear end dripping on the floor of my garage. I’m happy and not complaining just stating my experiences.
A lifetime ago I bought a new ’85 FWD Fleetwood. Didn’t want to give up an old Brougham that I loved so the new car was garaged at my dad’s. A neighbor’s 5 year old son took a liking to my car. He would go to my dad’s door. When my dad answered the youngster said I came to see your mother’s magic car. My dad aways got the keys and they went to look at that magic car. The young man played with the magic things. I think the kid visited the car for the two years that it lived there.
My dad had a late model CDV at the time. We never knew why my car was magic and my dad’s was not. Kids are interesting.
Drove an XT5 loaner for a couple days, and was glad to get my XTS back.
