The GM Authority Take
The 35 percent drop in December CT6 deliveries was significantly greater than the segment average of 9 percent. The performance places the full-size Cadillac sedan in third place in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume – behind the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which outsold the CT6 more than two-fold, as well as the BMW 7 Series, which outsold the CT6 by 266 units.
Even so, the CT6 outsold the Genesis G90, Lexus LS and Audi A8 (see Audi A8 sales). Both the Lexus and Audi are seeing abnormally low sales volumes as a result of ongoing launches of all-new models. As such, both the Lexus and Audi posted higher year-over-year sales drops than the CT6.
We attribute the decrease in CT6 sales performance to the following factors:
- A strong holiday season push for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class at the retail level, and
- The ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks
In addition, it’s worth noting that the CT6 and the Genesis G90 were the only two segment contenders to record sales growth during the complete 2017 calendar year.

About Cadillac CT6
The Cadillac CT6 is a full-size prestige luxury sedan. It slots above the mid-size Cadillac CTS and compact Cadillac ATS as the largest Cadillac sedan.

All I have to say, is that Cadillac better have at least one Superbowl ad this year. This will be a huge year, especially for the northeast, right in Caddys backyard. If Cadillac want consumers to know their serious, they have got to step up the advertising game, and this would be a great way to start.
Advertising is key. Problem is, they can advertise product that isn’t that great (CT6 excepted and even it will be getting a major redo soon). So they’re stuck in limbo until they get the new crossovers and sedans in showrooms. Then they will start advertising. Hard.
I’m a retired advertising Exec so I believe in the power of advertising. I can’t turn on the TV without seeing and ad for Mercedes, BMW and Lexus and guess what…they’re all out selling Cadillac. Say what you want about Cadillac, but I’ve had 17 new ones and currently own a 2017 CTS and a 2017 XT5. Both are great cars and both are an excellent value compared with European competitors. I believe “Good Advertising” sells. Unfortunately what little advertising Cadillac has done, has not been good. I’m glad Mr. Ellinghaus is gone, I hope JDN finds a replacement that understands Marketing 101 and I hope that together they can hire an Ad Agency that understands the Automobile Market.
The Audi A8 , Lexus LS , Mercedes S-class and BMW 7 Series are Top tier luxury cars . They sell for high prices because they are worth the price for the segment they sell in .
The CT6 , Lincoln Continental , G90 and XTS are priced the way they are because they are not in the same league or segment as the Top tier cars . I don’t even believe the XTS , regardless of it’s price should even be grouped in the same segment as the CT6 , Lincoln , or G90 . Even as good as it is it’s a tweener selling in an odd spot .
For Cadillac to compete in the top tier segment they need something better than the CT6 , just because they raise the price doesn’t give them the creed to be considered in such a segment .
To compare Cadillacs premier luxury car to what is really the best most luxurious and technologically advanced cars in the world will always hurt the reputation of the CT6 . With some work like it’s own power plant and and more advanced interiors it may give license for placing the car into a higher tier .
Despite what is written in magazines, I think you will find that a good number of BMW, Mercedes and especially Audi owners are not that terribly thrilled with the brands they are driving and feel that they are over priced. Several have made the move to Cadillac and are very happy. That is a fact. The failing is truly the marketing. Now having said that, it’s a bit late in the game. As many will recall, 2017 was to be the year Cadillac flexed its marketing muscle. We all saw how that went. A change should be coming with the new products. At this point it makes little sense to tout all the things that Cadillac will be replacing. Truth is, the product is not nearly as bad as people like to claim and it has held its own for some time. That is very true of the V series cars.
Can get a cts-v on cars.com for under 60k now. 40% drop in 2 to 3 years with relatively low mileage. Look out below!
That’s how I’d buy a CTS-V. In fact I buy most of my vehicles the same.
That is true of any luxury brand from Mercedes AMG to Porsche. They all take a bug old tumble. To my knowledge, no one has ever suggested that these cars are investment pieces.
Not true at all. At least based on demand. M5 availability on cars.com of 35 vehicles between 2016 to 2018. CTS-V availability of over 300 vehicles for same years of 2016 to 2018.
The market has spoken clearly and consider the CTS-V inferior to an M5.
And I haven’t even looked at other competitors and lowest selling price of an M5 is still higher than a CTS-V of roughly equivalent year and mileage.
I agree with you!
I don’t have anything against the Continental and XTS, but they are not in the same category like the CT6 and G90. The Continental is severely handicapped due to lower price and lack of features that easily competes with the XTS.
You are forgetting that both G90, somewhat, (formerly known as Equus for first generation model) and CT6 are competing in the full size segment the first time so understandably, they are going to be lower priced. Few things lacking in the CT6 is size, technology and features that some can be fixed on the refresh to the next generation models. Besides, IMO, the CT6 is a test bed for the CT7 that will be available past ’21-’22 if such a car is considered, else, the next generation CT6 could be the go-to-flagship car in several years for the brand other than the Escalade.
Also, the reason why the CT6 appears to be a tweener is that the market for the foreign competition abandon the standard wheelbase models in favor of the long wheelbase models that are now standard by default here in the States. Cadillac had develop the CT6 way before the change in market, except the S Class was a LWB by default starting in ’00. The LWB models by default currently are the S Class, 7 Series, A8, LS and G90. Jaguar XJ could follow suite if they hadn’t already.
What about my XT5 2017, any particulare news….
There is news galore on the XT5…

It would be very refreshing to see at least one Cadillac sedan with even half the sales these cars used to enjoys years back. Sad times
It is something most luxury car makers are aware of is that their cars are usually leased and very few are bought .
They have the benefit of a bumper to bumper warranty and then turn it in for the next model which is usually a refreshed model that they just got out of .
it’s a good deal for those that want to buy these cars that are usually covered by a CPO . I have bought some of those vehicles which is good way to get into something that you may not have been able to buy new .
On a recent show from Autoweek Daily , they had numbers that show how the CPO market will be huge in a year or so and that worries automakers because those sales will steal sales of new cars . So we may see fewer lease deals soon to help get a handle on that part of the market .
Look on AutoTrader.com and you can already see XT5’s and XTS V-Sport for very reasonable prices . In fact in my area there is a 2017 XTS V-Sport for $45,500 w/ 8000 miles on the clock and Certified and no accidents . I have actually been looking seriously at it . Most high end vehicles really take a hit in price in just a single year .
Phew, no Drew
