One of the standout features potentially overlooked during the Chevy’s new half-tone pickup’s review is the 2019 Silverado’s tailgate. For the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, the brand will offer four different versions of the tailgate, and one is a slick new power-operated version.
Motor Trend detailed the new tailgates in a report published last Monday, and they include a standard drop-down version, two torsion-bar units, and one with an electric motor. The electrically operated one is the niftiest.
The tailgate uses a pair of power-assist latches like the C7 Corvette‘s door units to make for a very user-friendly tailgate. Owners can simply tap the latch on the tailgate or use the key fob to operate the power-assist feature. The motor spins and either lowers or raises the tailgate back in its proper place.
As a safety net, the 2019 Silverado‘s tailgate also features reverse switches to detect resistance. The tailgate will not operate if it detects force on it. Better yet, owners can still remove this particular tailgate as well.

“The full power tailgate will be standard on High Country models and optional on LTZ models. Pricing has not been released yet.”
I’m assuming the powered lift gate will only be offered on the high end models and the old fashioned drop down tail gate will be only on the Work Truck. I understand the need to get the cost down on the low end models, but buyers of these trucks are the one that use the bed the most. Since the Work Truck guys use the tail gate the most, wouldn’t it make more sense to drop the standard gate and make the torsion version standard?
Work truck guys are strong enough to lift it. It’s the noodle arm office goer that needs a power gate when loading 20% more kale into the 20% larger bed.
But jokes aside, work trucks don’t need a fancy tailgate. Simple is key. Speaking of key, locking tailgate on a WT is more important.
Simple is key because work/ fleet trucks are based on cost of operation. Anything like extra motors add cost and the potential for costly replacement or downtime.
Simple and reliable is key.
We could look up the Vettes door motor part number and I’d guess each is under $100, yet I won’t waste my time…The question is who at GM would greenlight this idea? This has been offered by the aftermarket for decades, it’s not incredible popular…A liftgate available as a standalone accessory would be far more popular and useful…
That’s right work truck for the employees. High country for the owner of the company.
lol…I don’t think its to “help” anyone open or close it, just a novelty/gimmick to impress strangers in home improvement store parking lots…If you played “you can only pick one, a power liftgate or ACC/larger display/vented seats” a power tailgate would lose, often…
I like the electric tailgate. I installed electric door popers and lock on my 2015 Canyon tailgate. Also an electric cover. Trouble is I cant get it to the GMC remote Fob programed to open it. I think I’m going to hands free, you know you have your hands full of tools to put in the box and can’t get to the remote. Wave you foot and open sesame. But I would give this 2017 Denali 2500HD Duramax with 2900 miles back today for the 2007 LBZ Duramax Classic I traded in just to get the A/C vents in the backseat back. Now it will be 10 years or $10,000 to get them back. GM make a kit. Sell me a kit. Ill buy a kit. Get it done. Something better. Not just catch up. I/O you can program to different GM remotes. For my electric cover. Maybe if I get the electric tailgate than use those wires to open my electric cover. Offer something better. Get into the year 2018 with your 2019 truck. I see Ford now is offering WIFI, and have offered most if not all you are offering for years.
Tell us more about the torsion bar units.
The power gates are a novelty for the suburban owner. If you are on a farm or work site you are not going to wait for all that crap to do its thing or you do not want the cost to fix it.
I The torsion ones I though were pretty much standard now. most truck I look at have them. Work trucks are fine with them.
I do see a need for a power lock. Too many thefts and a power lock prevents that with no key involved.
No reason to just make it optional on any of the lower trucks let the public choose. Many trucks will already have the wiring. My factory bed lights on my GMC are hooked into a wire all the trucks have.
Speaking of which a reasonable price on optional bed lights or just make them standard on most models would be great.
Make a port so the bed storage compartments could also plug in.
Look st the new tailgate that is on the “Aftermarket” Elongator.com it’s amazing! I can’t believe it took so long for someone to figure this out?
