The Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan, is no longer after two blasts finally brought the structure down. The Silverdome was home to numerous motorsport and sporting events during its life and was home to the Detroit Lions from 1975 until 2001.
So, we briefly remember the Silverdome with a little autocross action. Fittingly, with a Pontiac Fiero GT. It’s a Pontiac Fiero autocrossing at the Pontiac Silverdome… in Pontiac, Michigan.
According to the video, the quick little Fiero placed second that day, only behind a Honda S2000. Not bad for a forgotten mid-engine sports car.
As for the Silverdome, the first detonation of the facility ultimately failed after charges failed to blow this past Sunday. Still, the Silverdome was arguably still standing even after the second explosion, leading many internet-goers to question what the facility is made of. Some pointed to sponsorship logos still painted on the building reading “Volvo” and “Nokia” with humor—both are often referred to as indestructible.
Thanks for the memories, Silverdome.

The truth is back in the day the Fiero did well in Autocross.
Todd Rupp won several national class championships in a Fiero Formula. Also there was a Doctor that ran and he also won on the national level.
The 88 model is the prime one for stock classes but a 84-87 can be modified to be competitive in the past. Rules changes and new cars I am sure has changed this but it was a good car to compete. Good handling and not so much power to over power the course.
The Silverdome was the home for one of the national Fiero meets We help put on a show with nearly 200 Fieros in attendance.
We also had our banquet in the club in the end zone.
Might note GM designer John Schinella was up set that Pontiac refused to bring out the 1990 GT prototype due to many political issues at GM and with the Union. John brought photos of the 1990 model and spoke on the GT and Coupes that were never to be. It was the first time it was shown.
John noted the 1990 Fiero also was the styling they lifted to make the 4th gen F body.
The 1990 GT is still in the GM heritage collection today.
