The GM Authority Take

After posting record-setting sales for the first 10 months of 2017, the second-generation Acadia saw its first sales decrease in November.

The performance places Acadia in eighth place in its general segment in terms of overall November sales volume. The model was outsold by its primary competitors, the Ford Explorer (see Ford Explorer sales), Toyota Highlander, Jeep Grand Cherokee (see Jeep Grand Cherokee sales), Honda Pilot, Ford Edge (see Ford Edge sales) and Hyundai Santa-Fe and the Chevrolet Traverse, which shares a larger version of the Acadia’s C1 vehicle architecture (see Chevy Traverse sales). The Acadia outsold other strong segment contenders, including the Nissan Murano, Kia Sorento, Nissan Pathfinder, Buick Enclave, another variant of the long wheelbase C1 platform (see Buick Enclave sales), Dodge Durango (see Dodge Durango sales), Volkswagen Atlas (see VW Atlas sales), Dodge Journey (see Dodge Journey sales), Mitsubishi Outlander and Mazda CX-9.

We attribute the Acadia’s decent November sales performance to the following factors:

  1. A competitive model that represents an attractive overall package
  2. Healthy incentives to move existing inventory units
  3. A continuous change in consumers’ vehicle buying dynamics as car buyers continue to switching to crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) from other vehicle types like sedans

And despite its drop in November, the GMC crossover holds one of the highest sales gains in its segment during the first 11 months of 2017.

About GMC Acadia

2017 GMC Acadia media drive 002

The GMC Acadia is a mid-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It is the largest GMC crossover currently offered, slotting above the compact GMC Terrain.

The current model was introduced for the 2017 model year and represents the second generation of the Acadia nameplate. It rides on the GM C1 platform shared with the Cadillac XT5. It is expected that the upcoming, future Chevrolet Blazer will ride on the same platform. Meanwhile, the second-generation Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave use a longer-wheelbase variant of the same architecture.

Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen Acadia is an all-new vehicle that is one size segment smaller, while also being sleeker, more modern, more tech-laden and much lighter. Despite its smaller size, the second-gen Acadia manages to retain three rows of seating and generous cargo space.

The GMC Acadia is built exclusively at the GM Spring Hill factory in Tennessee operated by GM USA.

  1. That Consumer Reports reliability rating my have hurt this vehicle… although I believe it was referencing the older model.

  2. They had early issues on these and they have been resolved. Most were with the media screens.

They did run a major sale in Dec that took at least $8k to $10k or more the sticker. The numbers should jump up as you see many new ones with temp tags on right now.

    1. BG started this lead brand rebate play the last half of this year drilling rebates all the way down to the trim level. This hurt the car in November however for December they put rebates across all trim levels. Wow rocket science

  3. This segment is where everyone wants a piece of the pie .
With 3 rows of seats in the Acadia that doesn’t leave a lot of storage space behind that last row of seats . A common complaint for the now smaller Acadia .
How ever if you get the All Terrain model you get a bench seat for the second row and much more storage because this trim doesn’t have a third row of seats .
GM isn’t going to allow this SUV to run 5-10 years without s major refresh in this hot segment .

  4. I think what gets left behind here is the new Acadia is targeted at the old Terrain buyers. The new Terrain is now a smaller vehicle and now off the list of people like my wife.

As for the third seat it is there but like most that are in a Terrain now we have no care or need. It is nice it is there but not the reason we would buy an Acadia.

If we had to have a 3rd seat we would shop the Traverse or Buick.

  5. Hmm we found a new 2017 Denali 26% off MSRP.

Good buy and really nice ride.

Tried a Traverse but it was too big and the new Terrain was too small.
