SUVs remained the fastest-growing segment for GM, with sales surging 73 percent year-over-year.
GM is launching more than 10 new and refreshed models in the second half of 2017, including the new Buick Regal, Baojun 310 Wagon and Wuling Hong Guang S3 SUV.
In the first 11 months of 2017, GM and its joint ventures delivered a record 3,549,087 units in China, an increase of 3.3 percent.

In the coming two years, the brand will launch plug-in hybrid and pure battery electric vehicles to expand its green car lineup. In addition, the brand has also announced the all-new 2018 Buick Regal. With 10 variants on offer, the new Regal will build on the success of the popular premium sedan nameplate.

Lets see, Not a sporty car. Room for real American people. Smooth Ride Quiet, and it sells.
What does that say about JDN’s plans?
Are you channeling the Drew?
“What does that say about JDN’s plans?”
That he knows what he’s doing in China. You might want to look at the rest of the stats too.
– Cadillac XT5 sales increased 26 percent to over 6,500 units; Cadillac introduced the XT5 Hybrid in late August, expanding the XT5 lineup
– Cadillac ATS-L sales increased 21 percent to nearly 5,000 units, its 17th consecutive month of double-digit growth
– Cadillac CT6 sales more than doubled to over 1,200 units
– Cadillac XTS sales increased 12 percent; the refreshed 2018 Cadillac XTS was introduced in November
What color is that XT5 in the picture , like an electric blue ? That should be a color choice IMO .
Looks like we should thank China for keeping Buick alive .
It would be a good thing if these type of sales numbers were here in the US as well .
China’s ATS-L has a 3.5-inch longer wheelbase, imagine rear seat passengers of the ATS having 3.5-inches of additional legroom as this could make the difference in a sales and a potential US customer picking a foreign competitor; you’ve got to wonder why Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen never ever thought of importing a couple of hundred of China’s ATS-L to the United States and see whether the ATS-L would be as popular before spending the money to build the ATS-L in the United States.
Johan never wanted an ATS-L for the USA, because he wants “proper” cars for each category – i.e. match the German-established specs, don’t exceed them. The ATS was built to match the BMW 3-series (of that time, since then BMW added more legroom), and JDN was really proud that Cadillac now had “proper” ATS and CTS, instead of the 1st gen CTS “tweener” that sold well but just didn’t match the German sizing specs. In other words, if the Germans aren’t doing it, don’t do it yourself.
The ATS-L might have been a nice car for full-sized Americans, and it might have been in keeping with Cadillac tradition to make a roomy, comfortable riding car. But it’s totally backwards to think that Cadillacs should be built to Cadillac traditions, for American tastes, or American roads. You have to find out what the Germans are doing, then built THAT for Americans. Even if those Euro-clones don’t sell, you still have to do it that way, because EVENTUALLY people will love Cadillac. That’s what “the playbook” says, so you have to stick to it.
Brilliant expert Melody Lee has said Cadillac needs to stick to the game plan, even if it takes another 10 years to see results. She said that after she’d already been at Cadillac for 5 years, with dismal results. Melody is obviously very smart – how else could someone with zero automobile or marketing credentials get a cushy job, and give herself 15 years with no positive results as her performance benchmark? So why argue with someone like Melody Lee? Stick with the game plan, no matter the results for (another) 15 years. No ATS-L for you! Next!
Why do people think that having more rear leg room equals a better car? Why does the back seat matter so much to people who will never be riding back there?
I won’t spend one minute in the back seat of my car and therefore I could care less about what it feels to ride back there!
This car is better then it competitor because it has 1 inch more leg room which is complete garbage!
Brian, the ATS has 33.5″ of rear seat legroom, which means that unless you are a tiny adult, you’ll be very cramped. And even small adults tend to prefer more legroom.
The other thing is that the extended wheelbase of the ATS-L should result in a smoother ride, even if you are in the driver’s seat. Now if you don’t care about a smooth comfortable ride, that’s your preference, but Cadillac is famous for “the Cadillac ride”, not for a harsh choppy one. The current ATS hurts Cadillac’s core image, due to the poor ride.
Now if you want to eliminate the rear seats altogether, that’s a great idea that “Henry” who contributes posts here had, as a replacement for the ATS. Instead of 4 cramped seats, why not 2 comfortable ones. Answer: because that’s not what the Germans do with their “proper” BMW 3 series, etc. According to current Cadillac management, they are not in the business of being leaders, but followers. Which again is why you’ll not only not see a 2 seat replacement for the ATS, you won’t see anything like the ATS-L. “Dare Greatly” was an empty slogan, “Imitate Timidly” is Cadillac’s reality now.
If you are hanging your hat on what the rear dimensions of a car are then you don’t have much of a car!
Last time I checked I don’t ride in the back seat as most car owners don’t so those numbers shouldn’t matter
“If you are hanging your hat on what the rear dimensions of a car are then you don’t have much of a car!”
AND you’ve got a really weird hat!
“Last time I checked I don’t ride in the back seat as most car owners don’t so those numbers shouldn’t matter”
So it’s all about you? For one thing, a lot of wealthy Chinese do hire chauffeurs to drive their cars – where the owner rides in the back seat.
But even if someone doesn’t ride in the back of their own car, you can’t imagine them caring about their back seat passengers? Brian I’d love to see your living room, I guess you have a magnificent throne for yourself and cheap bean-bag chairs for everyone else. Or maybe your guests just sit on the bare floor.
Believe it or not though, some people do care about the comfort of their guests. And it might make a financial difference as well; if you are driving business clients in your back seat, they might be more amenable to doing business with you if they are not cramped with 33.5″ of legroom.
Boy–if I could have gotten my hands on an ATS-L I probably would have traded in my 2008 CTS for one–a little more room for my passengers–didn’t know anything about the car until now.
General Motors of Shanghai developed the ATS-L as you’ve got to think they’re probably already developing prototypes of a Cadillac XT5 with 3rd row seating.
They’re not.
Don’t run ahead of the train. The XT5 with third row seating will be called the XT6 and has already been under development.
Shanghai GM doesn’t do any serious development work for global GM vehicles… and this will be a global model.
Also, you won’t see any more China-specific variants of Cadillac models after the ATS-L.
Catering to the Chinese market should be a top priority at GM! But for some reason people hate that idea.
It is their top priority.
That’s why all Cadillac’s are now bland plastic soulless boxes on wheels designed to cater the Chinese.
The XT5 is just a rebadged Opel.
It could be the lack of taste that gets these cars sold in these numbers, but they are getting sold over there.
Cadillac should just leave the US just as they left Europe.
Most Cadillacs will be build en designed in China anyway in the future, so why keep losing money in the US.
They can only keep 50% of the profits in China, but there at least these things sell.
Plastic? – You obviously haven’t noticed how generic the German cars have become.
Why don’t you concentrate on the US market?
