The GM Authority Take
Trax sales fell more than the segment average in November, with the performance placing the model in third place within its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume, behind the Jeep Compass (see Jeep Compass sales) and Jeep Renegade (see Jeep Renegade sales), yet ahead of its platform mate – the Buick Encore (see Buick Encore sales), as well as the Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-3 (see Mazda CX-3 sales) and Nissan Juke.
Even so, the Trax’s 20 percent drop in sales volume is disappointing given that it represents a greater decrease than the 4 percent drop experienced by the segment during a time when crossover popularity is growing. We attribute the Trax’s November sales performance to the following factors:
- The growing popularity of the recently-redesigned Jeep Compass and Toyota C-HR, which are gaining sales at the expense of other segment rivals, and
- Consumer movement towards larger, compact-sized crossovers, which saw sales grow 18 percent in November
Going forward, we expect Trax sales volume to continue being threatened by newer segment rivals, including the Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V and Toyota CH-R, as well as the upcoming Nissan Rogue Sport, Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Kona, until Chevy completely overhauls (redesigns and reengineers) the model.

About Chevrolet Trax
The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover. It slots below the Equinox as Chevrolet’s smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo and Buick Encore. The model was Chevrolet’s first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space and the second (after the Nissan Juke) to launch in its segment in the U.S. market.
Having launched for the 2015 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, the replacement of the LTZ trim by the new range-topping Premier model, revised interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more. The 2018 Chevy Trax represents the fourth model year of the first-generation Trax and receives several changes including three new exterior colors, a new Trax Redline Edition model, and several equipment-level changes.
The Trax is built at two assembly plants — the GM Bupyeong factory operated by GM Korea and the GM San Luis Potosi factory operated by GM Mexico. The vehicle is called the Chevrolet Tracker in some markets, including South America and Russia.

It’s just amazing that Chevrolet can build a car that is listed as one of the most satisfying to own and drive in the C7 Corvette and one of the least satisfying to drive in the Trax; maybe Chevrolet can ask C7 Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter to look through the GM parts bin on picking out some bits and pieces that would elevate the Trax.
To make the Trax outstanding all they need to do is take the Buick Encore and put the Chevrolet bowtie on it. Done. The Trax is ugly and reeks of cheapness everywhere IMO. The Buick on the other hand is a home run.
Both the Trax and Encore need to have been redesigned yesterday. They were first to market (outside of the Juke) but are now getting long in the tooth.
Matt and Silent are talking around almost the same idea.
There needs to be an new Buick Encore. The old Encore becomes the new Chevy.
The first thing this needs is two engine upgrades and elimination of the old underpowered 138 HP 1.4T. The base engine should be the 153 HP 1.4T and the Equinox 1.5T with 170 horses the upgrade. Then cleanup the suspension and styling some and upgrade interior materials. Those changes would go a long way to fixing what is wrong with this dud.
my grand daughter and grand son both got new traxs and there is nothing wrong with them for your first new car.
To me there’s nothing wrong with the exterior. I prefer the Encore (’cause I own one) but do not smirk or cringe at the Trax. I see it as my ‘cousin’ and thinks it’s looks pretty good just the same.
Interior? What — was the ‘Nox and Cruze and even the Bolt some sort of luxury experience I missed? All used cheap plastics everywhere. Understandably. ‘Cause Chevrolet.
By the by — the most SHOCKING plastic BLEH experience I’ve had recently was a two year old Prius C. Sit in there for three minutes and you’ll be DREAMING about the Trax.
I leased a basic Trax for a running around town vehicle. The Equinox is used for longer trips. As a person who only drives GM vehicles, I find little fault with the Trax. Not exciting, but very easy to maneuver and easy to park.
I forgot to mention, this Trax is a two year lease at $118 per month. That alone makes me love the little rascal!
