The GM Authority Take
After a runaway August, a normalized September, and a healthy jump in October, the Impala saw an even bigger jump in November. In fact, its 54 percent jump in November U.S. sales volume was the biggest among high-volume sellers in its segment. The performance propelled it to first place in its segment in terms of overall sales volume during the month, ahead of the Dodge Charger by 3,323 units (see Dodge Charger sales) and Nissan Maxima in third, Chrysler 300 in fourth (see Chrysler 300 sales), Toyota Avalon in fifth, and Ford Taurus in sixth. The Kia Cadenza came in seventh seventh, Chevy’s own SS Performance Sedan in eighth (see Chevy SS sales), Hyundai Azera in ninth, and the now-discontinued Volkswagen CC in tenth and last place.
We attribute the Impala’s impressive November sales performance to the following factors:
- A competitive model that represents an attractive overall package
- Attractive incentives on existing inventory units (see Impala incentives for November)
- Potentially significant increases in deliveries to fleet customers

- Sales of the Nissan Maxima and the discontinued Volkswagen CC are included in the report since both models carry similar pricing structures to vehicles in the mainstream full-size sedan segment. However, the Maxima and CC are not full-size sedans. Instead, they are midsize sedans with a greater amount of premium content over the similarly-sized Nissan Altima and Volkswagen Passat, respectively.
- Chevrolet SS Sedan sales included in the report since the vehicle is a full-size mainstream performance sedan
The full-size mainstream sedan segment saw sales increase 6 percent in November, with four of the segment’s ten models seeing sales growth. Meanwhile, sales slid 10 percent in the first 11 months of 2017, with only three contenders seeing sales growth during the time frame. The segment’s slumping year-to-date performance is representative of the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics in the automotive sector that favors CUVs and SUVs over other model types, with sedan sales suffering the most.
About Chevrolet Impala
The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan. It is the biggest Chevrolet sedan currently offered, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic, compact Chevrolet Cruze and midsize Chevrolet Malibu.
The current model was introduced for the 2014 model year and represents the tenth generation of the storied Impala nameplate. It rides on the GM Super Epsilon platform shared with the second-generation Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS.
Compared to its ninth-generation predecessor, the tenth-gen Impala is an all-new vehicle that is larger, sleeker and more modern. Chevrolet modified its strategy for the new model, as the ninth-gen model was sold to rental fleets in significant quantities, while the tenth-gen is primarily entended for purchase by consumers at the retail level. This condition alone has resulted in a strategic decrease in sales of the current model.
Going forward, it is unclear whether the Impala will live on to see a next, 11th generation, as comments by GM executives have left the vehicle’s future in limbo, mostly as a result of a change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics that is beginning to favor crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of sedans.
The Chevrolet Impala is built at the GM Detroit-Hamtramck factory in Michigan operated by GM USA as well as the GM Oshawa factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada.

Comments
I have driven the 2014 Chevy Impala and it is in a class by itself. If GM will make a sportier versions, it can gain even more sales. Maybe a Cadillac V8 or a turbo V6 will convert it into a SS model.
We own a 2014 Impala LT. It’s a magnificent car. We wanted an LTZ (now Premier) at the time, but couldn’t afford it. But, in the grand scheme of things, we feel like we aren’t missing too much. It was well optioned even in LT trim. It’s a great road car. Very, very comfortable but still has, slight, sporty aspirations. The V6 provides plenty of power. Even after 56,000 miles, we love this car.
I’m really sad to hear the rumors that the Impala doesn’t have much of a future. I’d love to see a new Impala based on the current LaCrosse.
Bang for the buck, the Chevrolet Impala offers the most value as far as full size sedans go.
I honestly think the Impala should see another generation. I mean if there’s going to be a new Avalon coming in January, then that means there will still be sales for full-size sedans in a way…. just might sell less than the midsizers
and the rolls royce phantom is gonna be huge, so full size sedans are not dead.
if they can still sell Camry – Accord-Maxima – Audi & Volvo sedans there is no reason Chevy should discontinue any sedans . apply some sporty options to both Malibu and impala . If GM discontinues sedans they will only give that market to there competitors to increase there sales . if GM could get it into their heads ( although todays market is SUVs ) not people want them and do not automobiles that arrive in the USA by boat
Just like it’s Chrysler’s loss to discontinue the 200 and dart even though they’re selling charger and 300 like crazy to either retail or fleet
Vic is right! The kill the sedan mania must end. 200 was great and the Dart very competent.
I think GM would be nuts to kill Impala. I suppose it could replace Malibu but there is room for both cars.
Rom unless they want to make malibu a tweener sized like the accord but again majority of the midsize cars are bit tweener sized because some are about the size of a fullsizers
Maybe it will change and we will see a new Impala in these future.
We have the deep red 2015 LT2 V-6 love it. The Impala won Kelly Blue Book best buy award 4 years in a row and neither GM or its dealers is using it to increase sales. None of the news wires picked up the KBB award either. If it was Tesla that is all we would see or hear.
2015 ltz owner. Sedans are practical. That’s why they’ve been around this long. Room for 6, well 5 nowadays. A nice, large, secure trunk for your junk, separate from the passenger compartment. The sheeple falling for the cuv. What’s the benefit to standing aside while the great hatch to the top heavy, ugly box opens, load your stuff in what amounts to the cabin with nil square footage and hide it with a roller shade? Heating and cooling the cargo area? Rant over.
I think the advantage is just the height where you can see over some other cars. Unless it’s big lifted trucks then both cars and crossovers won’t be able to over but sometimes having a crossover is better just because you can see over stuff
We have always had a full sized.or mid sized Sedan. As a matter of fact, I just purchased a New 2017 Chevrolet Impala Premier 2/LTZ in Siren Red. and will be surprising my Wife It this week. The Impala is the Car we have both wanted, since they introduced the all new 2014 model. It is Sporty, it is roomy, it is a great performer with the awesome V-6, it handles great, with comfort for long road trips, and overall, the Premier is a Cadillac for a lot less money. We are going to enjoy our beautiful Chrvy Impala, for many years to come ☺️ Did I mention it is Rated at 28 MPG Highway, and it got best value, too Of it’s class from Consumer Reports, plus the Kelley Blue Book awards. Our Siren Red Premier is going to look awesome in our garage, next to our 2015 Chevy Silverado LTZ Crew Cab…and Pampered 2002 SL 500.
Let’s keep writing GM,and posting and writing the Car Magazines,Consumer Reports, ZKBB, and others, to keep the Impala, and the Malibu alive…Their will always be folks who prefer a smooth riding, Well Built, Road Trip comfortable, stylish American Sedan…
By the way, our want and love for an Impala Premier, took me all the way to a Chevrolet Dealership in Oregon,to find the exact model and color we hoped for, these past three years…a Auto Transorter will be picking it up this week, in an enclosed custom trailer, and bringing it to our home in Nevada..where it will be a total surprise for my Wife. That’s how much We wanted an Impala, how much We want a GM Quality American Sedan, in our garage.
Good morning ?
A quick update, and my apologies for the typos in last nights post, regarding our new Siren Red Impala. As I reviewed last nights post this morning, it was obvious I didn’t proof read before sending, and it is also obvious that I am feeling like a Kid at Christmas, at the moment…
I just spoke with the Shipper, who had just arrived at the Chevrolet Dealership in Oregon, to pick up our new Impala, and he confirmed that he will be delivering it to our door, at Noon tomorrow ?
Are you considering a ew car before the end of the year??
Theirs still time for you to take advantage of the GM incentives, and put a new Chevy Impala Premier in your Garage…a Quality Built, American full size Sedan, that has won all the right Awards and Praises, at an affordable price ?? What more could you ask for??
If your intested, I’ll give you the names of a couple of great Chevrolet Sales Professionals, who are awesome to work with…
Gotta go make sure my Garage is ready for a new member of the family, thanks for listening.
I find it interesting that Impala sales are on the increase and Malibu’s keep going down. Apparently there are still people that want a larger sized nice riding safe and fleet sedan these days.
I said this on another post as well. How does gm want to refresh the malibu yet again (while sales steadily decrease) and then axe the impala while its sales are have climbed to the top of its segment?? To me it seems that gm keeps wasting their resources and money refreshing and advertising a declining malibu. Since 2013 they havent been able to get the front end right, which is why they refreshed the following year, in 2014 (got it right) then again 2 years after that (2016), and now yet again in 2019 for the same reason. While the impala on the other hand has received zero refreshes since its release in 2014 because they obviously got it right. They dont advertise for it or want to refresh it, which is part of why sales dropped initially…. now they threaten to discontinue it. Wow gm! Treat our impala like an unloved stepchild. Smh. Bring us an impala ss (rwd/awd v8) to fill the void of the discontinued chevy ss and compete with dodge charger. Try it at least…
