The GM Authority Take

Despite being an all-new model in a growing segment, the Equinox managed to turn in the worst year-over-year performance among its competitive set. The only other model to be in the red during the month was the Kia Sportage, down 1.87 percent.

The performance puts the compact Chevy crossover in fifth place in its segment in terms of cumulative sales volume, behind the Nissan Rogue in first, Honda CR-V in second, Toyota RAV4 in third, and the Ford Escape in fourth (see Ford Escape sales).

We attribute the decrease in Equinox deliveries to repercussions associated with the strike at the GM CAMI factory in Canada that produces the Equinox. The strike lasted four weeks and came to an end on October 14th. As such, we believe that levels of Equinox inventories were impacted by the strike, and we are now seeing the negative impacts of the same in the November sales figures. By comparison, the Equinox has sold extremely well over the last few months, setting new sales records in October, September and August of 2017.

About Chevrolet Equinox

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Redline Edition exterior - 2017 Chicago Auto Show 004

The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover. It slots above the Chevrolet Trax and below the Chevrolet Traverse. It will also be positioned below the rumored to be the future Chevrolet Blazer.

The first-generation Equinox ran from the 2005-2009 model years and was based on the first-generation Theta platform. The second-generation Equinox was offered from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. Both the first- and second-generation models were “tweeners”, in that they straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The third-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC TerrainChevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its two predecessors, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.

The third-generation, 2018 and newer Equinox features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.

The Chevrolet Equinox is built primarily at the GM CAMI factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada. Two GM Mexico facilities – GM San Luis Potosi and GM Ramos Arizpe – also share in producing the vehicle for North America.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Chevrolet Equinox November 2016 sales, except as noted
  • In the United States, there were 25 selling days in November 2017 and 25 selling days in November 2016
  • In Canada, there were 26 selling days in November 2017 and 26 selling days in November 2016

  1. Shouldn’t the title to this article have reference to your speculation why sales are down. Is it click bate to sell adds your after.

I’ve said before there is too many sales reports on this site. I don’t use this site for investment reports!

    1. What an idiotic thing to say.

YOU might not use this site for these kinds of reports but I do. I actually find these stories extremely useful, especially since I can tell how the GM cars are doing vs the competition. From what I know, this is the only place that provides the segment level of information and I really appreciate it.

So just because YOU don’t find an article to your liking or use this site “for investment reports” doesn’t mean that I or others don’t do so. So try not to ruin it for the rest of us eh?

      2. This is the same template they’ve been using for sales articles.
      3. Ad revenue keeps this website (and many others like it alive).
      4. “Is it click bate to sell adds your after.” Use correct grammar before posting.

      Thanks!

Upon first impression, the immediately apparent offensive “tone” of your comments appears to reveal you have an ax to grind. That smacks either of “cynicism”, bitterness, anger, all three of the aforementioned or a combination, thereof.

Perhaps you’re the type of member who’d rather read more articles about “big blocks” dropped into a Tesla or some similar sh*t”.

Frankly, my “guess” is that reading / comprehension just isn’t your strong suit. In particular, since this article has absolutely nothing to do with “investment reports”, as you so “astutely”, yet erroneously, claim.

    1. The titles for all of our sales stories all follow the same template, this one included. There is no clickbait. I regret your pompous, ill-conceived and half-baked accusation.

    2. As I have asked you in the past (but you did not reply): does it hurt you in some way that GMA writes informative sales stories such as this one? Does it pain you, dearly, or otherwise?

Or might you simply skip over it if it doesn’t interest you? That would seem like the logical solution. Hope you can explain your thoughts here.

    3. As mentioned in the comment preceding mine, your unfounded disdain for this kind of content does not correlate with the rest of GM Authority readers and patrons… and it will continue charting its own territory, whether you like it or not.

Personally, I’m elated that GMA is the only publication that provides this level of information on the internet, especially for free. That’s the power of ad-supported content.

    Good day.

    1. 1. “Falling to fifth place in its segment, the most in its class.” is the “pompous, I’ll-conceived and half-baked accusation” (that’s pretty colorful) I was referring to.

      2. “Chevrolet Equinox Sales Decrease 9 Percent To 19,667 Units In November 2017 ”
Likely due to an inventory shortage caused by the strike at the GM CAMI factory in Canada that produces the Equinox.

That would tell me enough to skip over it and keep DumbStyle (nice one) from spilling his/her coffee thinking the bottom has dropped out of this ill handling FWD cars sales success.

      Stay classy!

      1. Well, then – let’s see…

        1. The Equinox did, in fact, fall to fifth place in its segment in terms of overall U.S. sales volume in November. It also experienced the biggest sales drop in its segment. These are both indisputable facts.

By comparison, our guess (key word: guess) is that the sales decrease was caused by low inventory as a result of the CAMI strike. This is a guess. Not a fact.

Ultimately, the basic facts were clearly presented in the title and all the facts were presented in the article. It appears that you simply wish that we start writing titles to the desire of your majesty’s heart so as to allow you to “skip over” them.

        2. “That would tell me enough to skip over it and keep DumbStyle (nice one) from spilling his/her coffee thinking the bottom has dropped out of this ill handling FWD cars sales success.”

Ah, I get it. So now, our function as journalists is no longer to present factual information. To the contrary, our job is now to ensure that we write articles in such as way so that you can “skip over” them. Right on, I’ll take that under advisement.

You mention class, but any whiff of class that you had went right out the window when you started throwing around ignorant and half-witted accusations in your original comment, the ones surrounding clickbait and such. Why would you do that? Why stoop that to that level, when you know quite well this isn’t the case?

In the future, I recommend approaching the topic by asking rather than accusing… and doing so by contacting GM Authority or the author (in this case, myself) directly. That’s the most classy and appropriate thing to do… and probably the most effective.

        Good day!

Yes, “Likely due to” in other words “our guess, not a fact”. our “guess” is that it’s “likely” due to,,,

          2. throwing around ignorant and half-witted accusations.
“Is it click bate,,,” was a question that you must have misunderstood because my majesty didn’t include a question mark. So much for perfection.

2b. (is a “2b” allowed sir?) our job is now to ensure that we write articles in such as way so that you can “skip over” them.
I never said anything about the article, just the title. The article had a lot of detailed information and it was more then I needed. The “strike likely causing a dip in inventory and sales” the “basic facts” that were not in the title was enough for me, sorry. Are your readers obligated to open and read every article you post to make sure we do not misinterpret the titles? It’s your website so chart your own territory how ever you want. But you appear to be taking posts personal.

          3. In the future, I recommend approaching the topic by asking rather than accusing…
Yes I forgot that darn question mark, my apology’s again.

3b. and doing so by contacting GM Authority or the author (in this case, myself) directly. That’s the most classy and appropriate thing to do.
Here’s a suggestion, link the authors names in the articles to the appropriate email address to expedite direct contact, if we are looking to keep certain things on the down low. I’ll try to do that in the future.

          3c. pompous, ill-conceived, half-baked, Majesty, ignorant and half-witted < classy!
I'm sure you are going to want to have the last word, so go ahead Alex!

          1. If you think this is about having the last word, then you’re gravely mistaken. To the contrary, this is about you wrongly making an unfounded accusation in a pompous fashion, and me calling you out on it.

            Hope we’re clear on that.

  3. Perhaps the high prices, poor option packaging, lack of std safety features on the lower trim level LS versions and the annoying stop/start on the volume 1.5T are also hurting sales.

  4. They also stopped doing the incentives last month on the 2018 models. I was heavily considering the Diesel 2018 Equinox but there were no incentives to be had then. So I looked at other models instead

  6. Man , the personal insults from these bots / hacks are getting a bit lame . I hit this site d@mn near everyday because I know that the writers on GMA have alot to share . I may not always agree with some articles or opinions but I really try to not get personal about it , but that doesn’t mean a good ribbing once in a while keeps some on their toes .
And if you have an open mind you might just learn something . I agree that strike for sure had an impact on Nox sales but it will rebound I’m sure .
One thing today for instance I didn’t realize that the Equinox was selling that much better than it’s twin the Terrain . Is it price or packaging or the styling that is making such a difference ?
