The GM Authority Take
Cruze sales continued their unfavorable trend in November, with the model seeing one of the highest year-over-year slumps in its segment. The only models to post an even greater year-over-year drop in sales are the Volkswagen Golf and the now-discontinued Dodge Dart.
The performance places the Cruze in sixth place in its competitive set in terms of U.S. November sales volume, behind the Honda Civic in first, Toyota Corolla in second, Hyundai Elantra in third, Nissan Sentra in fourth and the Ford Focus in fifth. The Cruze did, however, outsell the remaining segment contenders including the Volkswagen Jetta and Golf (which accounted for a combined 9,145 sales), Kia Forte, Subaru Impreza, Mazda3 (see Mazda3 sales), Mitsubishi Lancer, and the now-discontinued Dodge Dart (see Dodge Dart sales).
We attribute the Cruze’s slumping November sales performance to the following factors:
- An ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks
- An extremely strong launch for and market reaction to the new Honda Civic
- Aggressive sales tactics for Nissan Sentra and Hyundai Elantra, led by high incentives and what we image to be high fleet sales
- Product-related issues for the Cruze, including it being the only model in the segment that can’t be equipped with a roof rack (without drilling into the car), not offering all-wheel-drive or a performance variant

About Chevrolet Cruze

2018 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback and Sedan Redline editions
The Chevrolet Cruze is a range of compact passenger cars currently consisting of a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. It slots above the Chevrolet Spark city car and subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and below the midsize Chevrolet Malibu and full-size Chevrolet Impala.
The current model was introduced for the 2016 model year and represents the second generation of the Cruze nameplate. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Volt and Buick Verano (in China).
Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen model is an all-new vehicle that is slightly larger, sleeker and more modern. The first-generation Cruze family was produced in sedan, hatchback, and wagon body styles, but only the sedan was available in North America. By comparison, the second-generation model is available as a sedan and hatchback. Though a wagon variant of the second-gen model was never produced, the hatchback model was made available in North America.
The Chevrolet Cruze sedan is built by GM USA at the GM Lordstown factory while the Cruze hatchback is assembled by GM Mexico at the GM Ramos Arizpe factory.

THATS A SHArp drop for the corolla
Actually these are disappointing numbers for the year other than the Honda, Toyota and Nissan.
In this segment they all look for 200,000 units or more.
What is more troubling for the Cruze is they see less global sales than most on the list.
GM needs to be more aggressive when it comes to their product offering. For example, there should a strategic plan from the model launch, through the model refresh and at the end of the model product life cycle.
For the Cruze GM should have make the 2.0 turbo available in a high performance variant. Also, GM needs to engineer and introduce a more potent 2.0 diesel to serve in the Cruze and the Equinox as a performance and fuel efficient option for that platform. Hence, while the 1.6 diesel is frugal, it provides lackluster performance otherwise.
Lastly, it is nonsense that GM cannot respond to a simple market trend such as the making a roof-rack available on the Cruze while its competitors respond far quicker to such simple options for their vehicles. This is why I always keep saying in this forum that GM doesn’t respond effectively enough to simple market trends and consumer demands for their products.
The problem with the Cruze is it’s overall design and appearance. This car should really appeal to young men and women from 16-30. Instead of making a great car, GM does what they always do and went with the cheap route so they could mass produce this car globally. They also need to offer a Halo Model. Put a Turbo Charger in a sport model, and dress this thing up to create some buzz. Unfortunately this car is so boring you could put wings on it and a jet engine and no one would care.
How can you say that Cruze sales are weak because of the newly designed Civic? They just redesigned the Cruze last year. It should have been able to withstand a competitors redesign. The Corolla has not been redesigned since 2014.
I really feel like GM does not care about segment market share gain. I think they are fine with the status quo of being in the middle of the row.
I honestly think the biggest detriment for the Cruze is the sedan’s appearance. It is dowdy and has terrible proportions, especially the sub-Premier trims. The tacky flanged 16″ wheels on LT models (not to mention the horrible 15″ plastic wheel covers on L and LS models) look way too tiny and cheap, especially on models with the RS package. The hatchback looks far better to my eye, but most compact buyers go for the sedan. It needs a styling overhaul yesterday, but knowing GM, it will linger on this way until the end of its lifecycle.
