2019 Silverado Features Mixed Material Use, Resulting In Significant Weight Reduction & Improved Performance

We still don’t know a whole lot about about Chevy’s all-new 2019 Silverado 1500 that it surprisingly announced at the Chevy Truck Centennial celebration in Texas last weekend. But paying attention to the details helps, and now we have another piece of noteworthy info.

The “use of mixed materials and advanced manufacturing is evident throughout the Silverado, resulting in a significant reduction in total vehicle weight and improved performance in many measures”, reads Chevy’s announcement about the next Silverado.

What that means in terms of actual weight, performance, payload and towing capacities is currently unclear, though we can’t wait until the second week of January to find out.

This compelling piece of information follows news that the Silverado will use “higher grade alloy steel” in the bed floor, is the result of over 7,000 customer interviews – the most intensive research in Chevy’s history, and will offer an expanded amount of (eight) models (including the new 2019 Silverado Trailboss variant) with more engine/transmission combinations and more technology and convenience features.

We’ll know plenty more about the new Silverado soon at Chevrolet’s upcoming media event scheduled for January 13th, 2018 ahead of the 2018 North American International Auto Show. In the meantime, be sure to follow our Chevy Silverado news coverage.

But all in all, this is shaping up to be one heck of a pickup.

  1. I believe the bed will use the same material and construction as the Colorado. If true it works well.

GM has used the same terms to describe not beds.

    1. scott – “If true it works well”. Do you have any experience abusing the bed of the Colorado? Lets hope they go a few steps further, the Colorado is no feather weight for its size.

I would guess the build tech going into the new full size will be implemented in the next refresh of the Colorado. Witch would be after we find out what the new Ranger brings to the table.

      2017 Chevrolet Colorado/Curb weight – 3,936 to 4,758 lbs

      2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500/Curb weight – 4,510 to 5,460 lbs

      2017 Ford F-150/Curb weight – 4,051 to 5,238 lbs

      2017 RAM 1500/Curb weight – 4,517 to 5,670 lbs

      1. As a matter of fact I own a Canyon so the answer is yes it will take a beating.

As for the Weight. There is the rest of the truck there you know.

They did not employ the mix of material in the rest like they are going to do in the new truck. They did use an aluminum hood and Boron steel in some key spots there is much more they still have to work with.

My CCSB 4×4 is right st 4500 pounds.

For what it is worth weight will only drop so much as they will still need some mass to keep the towing up. You do not want to try to stop 8000 pounds with 3500 pounds.

Yes the new Colorado will get weight cuts but not a lot at the refresh.

Nothing radical on the Ranger as it is only a refresh of the old one not a complete replacment.

There is a limit on how light things will get with a truck unless they go unibody and smaller.

Note my CCSB Canyon is not much one the. Weight of a Chrysler 300.

        1. Yes, it’s the “Mixed Material body Structure” tech I was referring to that was first used in the CT6.
I’m sure they have put it to full use on the new full size and will in the (next gen) twins. Obviously a mid-cycle refresh doesn’t include the body structure.

When it comes to curb weight to towing capacity. I don’t know the formula they use but a near 7,000lb HD tow’s over 23,000lbs. I sure GM was looking at family sized boats, small toy haulers and campers as the range for towing capacity on the twins.

As far as the CCSB twins and the Chrysler 300, Your talking about two different kinds of animals. Any idea what the frame of the truck it self weighs?

    2. I believe this is the ugliest truck Chevrolet has made yet. Rediculous

  2. Hmm. Mixed materials just means aluminum somewhere, usually the hood and liftgate. Advanced mixed materials means aluminum and steel in the same component – ie Aluminum door outer and inner with steel stiffeners internally (I don’t know if the truck will have this, to be clear).

    1. They are also using composites like CT6

      1. Yes the plan to use the steel welded to aluminum in this truck.

They will also will use steel like Boron and others that are light but stronger.

Additional use of magnesium will be used.

They also will use many of the little things they have been applying to the cars that have come along since this platform arrived.

Things like the use of fasteners that are only as long as needed. More weight savings in components in the truck like exhaust, brackets and supports.

        1. You can’t weld steel to aluminum

          1. Looks like somebody hasn’t been paying attention!

            That’s you AL

GM says it’s first to weld steel to aluminum. Warren — General Motors Co. believes it is the first automaker to weld steel to aluminum through resistance spot welding, a technique it spent some two years developing and expects will save weight and be less expensive.May 18, 2016
