The GM Authority Take

The Trax took third place in its segment in October, behind its platform mate, the Buick Encore, and Honda HR-V but ahead of the Toyota C-HR and Nissan Juke.

The 30 percent drop in sales volume is disappointing, given the growth crossover popularity in the marketplace and the overall growth of the segment during the month. We attribute the Trax’s October sales performance to strong Buick Encore and Honda HR-V sales, as well as the introduction of the Toyota C-HR into the market.

Going forward, we expect the newfound competition – especially the Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R as well as the upcoming Nissan Juke Sport, Ford EcoSport, and Hyundai Kona – to continue posing a threat to the Trax, until Chevy overhauls (redesigns and reengineers) the model.

About Chevrolet Trax

2018 Chevrolet Trax Redline Edition exterior - 2017 Chicago Auto Show 005

The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover. It slots below the Equinox as Chevrolet’s smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo and Buick Encore. The model was Chevrolet’s first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space and the second (after the Nissan Juke) to launch in its segment in the U.S. market.

Having launched for the 2015 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, the replacement of the LTZ trim by the new range-topping Premier model, revised interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more. The 2018 Chevy Trax represents the fourth model year of the first-generation Trax and receives several changes including three new exterior colors, a new Trax Redline Edition model, and several equipment-level changes.

The Trax is built at two assembly plants — the GM Bupyeong factory operated by GM Korea and the GM San Luis Potosi factory operated by GM Mexico. It is called the Chevrolet Tracker in some markets, including South America and Russia.

  1. The new Chevrolet family styling really works here but a performance variation is needed.

  2. I’d prefer to support and buy Chevrolet but the Buick hands down has been a far better looking cuv from day one. It just is.. The nice round wheel wells and sophisticated sporty look of the Buick really makes it pointless IMO for a Chevrolet model to even exist. The Buick’s interior is nicer too.

I really wish Chevrolet would step up their game to Buick and GMC levels. They would be in a far better position to take on the competition from Ford, Honda and the rest.

  3. The problem here is GM is stepping al, over itself here.

The Buick is better looking, better optioned and not that much more. The Chevy is just too much the same and does not give a better value which is what Chevy is all about.

GM needed to take this and change it up a bit to give them a different take over the Buick. Be it a longer wheel base or what ever to change the look to be a little more different or intriguing.

  4. The refresh was good but it didn’t go far enough. It should be peppier and have features to set it apart not the same ole same ole GM decontenting… etc., etc.

  5. Let’s see here, Chevy plus Buick combined outsold all other competitors in the segment COMBINED and you found a way to give GM’s numbers a negative spin!

    1. Yes but the nature of Chevy is they should still sell more volume than Buick as that is how they make their money.

  6. This is what happens when GM feels the need to have every one of it’s divisions competing in the same segment . Not only are they in competition with other automakers they are in competition with itself .
The Buick is by far the better looking of the two and the cost is minimal between both . As Buick is starting to make a design name for itself with those new lighting elements for the DRL’s , Chevy seems to just give their models the same split grill face that isn’t all that exciting .
Chevy should go more towards making their crossovers with a sports like theme , and let Buick go for the mid luxury part of the segment and when Cadillac joins the party they should fill in the more ultra luxury .
GM can’t afford to sell basically the same model for more than four years ( ex. Traverse etc. ) while others change up on average every couple of years . The market is getting to competitive with a bunch of players .

  7. One major reason GM owns this segment with over 50% of deliveries when Buick and Chevy versions are combined is because it has the leverage of not only 1900 Buick dealers but the segment is also present in over 3000 Chevy dealers (there are very few Buick/Chevrolet combined dealership). It’s called shelf space. Lots of Chevy buyers wouldn’t get caught dead in a Buick or, at least, even consider going into a Buick store. Meanwhile Chevy dealers get plenty of traffic and, therefore, product exposure.
Reading a lot of these comments tells me that many of the critics of GM’s marketing strategy either don’t understand the numbers or are just plain anti-GM. Isn’t it about time to stop echoing the tired old “division overlap” mantra from the last century? Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Saturn and Hummer are long gone folks. Lets face it, the Buick is upscale from the Chevrolet by design as is Cadillac to Buick. Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infinity all share platforms so why is it somehow stupid of GM to do likewise?

  8. The Trax needs a redesign and three more variation , a premiere one , an SS or sport and a kind of off road one or an off road a variation that make potential customers look at the Trax as the Alpha sub compact SUV.
