The GM Authority Take

After a runaway August and a normalized September, the Impala saw quite a healthy jump in October sales.

The performance places the Impala in second place in its segment in terms of overall sales volume during the month, behind the Dodge Charger by 533 units (see Dodge Charger sales). It was followed by the Nissan Maxima in third place, Chrysler 300 in fourth (see Chrysler 300 sales), Toyota Avalon in fifth, Ford Taurus in sixth, Kia Cadenza in seventh, Hyundai Azera in eighth, and the now-discontinued Volkswagen CC in ninth.

We attribute the Impala’s trend-bucking October sales performance to the following factors:

  1. A competitive model that represents an attractive overall package
  2. Decent incentives on existing inventory units (see Impala incentives for October)
  3. Potentially significant increases in deliveries to fleet customers

  • Sales of the Nissan Maxima and the discontinued Volkswagen CC are included in the report since both models carry similar pricing structures to vehicles in the mainstream full-size sedan segment. However, the Maxima and CC are not full-size sedans. Instead, they are midsize sedans with a greater amount of premium content over the similarly-sized Nissan Altima and Volkswagen Passat, respectively.
  • Chevrolet SS Sedan sales included in the report since the vehicle is a full-size mainstream performance sedan

The full-size mainstream sedan segment saw sales increase 15 percent in October, with Dodge, Chevrolet (Impala), Nissan and Kia seeing growth as all other contenders saw sales decrease. During the first ten months of 2017, segment sales decreased nearly 12 percent to 301,466 units, with the Impala and Kia Cadenza being the only two models showing growth.

The segment’s slumping year-to-date performance is representative of the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics in the automotive sector that favors CUVs and SUVs over other model types, with sedan sales suffering the most.

About Chevrolet Impala

2015 Chevrolet Impala Blackout Concept - SEMA 2014 02

The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan. It is the biggest Chevrolet sedan currently offered, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic, compact Chevrolet Cruze and midsize Chevrolet Malibu.

The current model was introduced for the 2014 model year and represents the tenth generation of the storied Impala nameplate. It rides on the GM Super Epsilon platform shared with the second-generation Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS.

Compared to its ninth-generation predecessor, the tenth-gen Impala is an all-new vehicle that is larger, sleeker and more modern. Chevrolet modified its strategy for the new model, as the ninth-gen model was sold to rental fleets in significant quantities, while the tenth-gen is primarily entended for purchase by consumers at the retail level. This condition alone has resulted in a strategic decrease in sales of the current model.

Going forward, it is unclear whether the Impala will live on to see a next, 11th generation, as comments by GM executives have left its future the vehicle’s future in limbo, mostly as a result of a change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics that is beginning to favor crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of sedans.

The Chevrolet Impala is built at the GM Detroit-Hamtramck factory in Michigan operated by GM USA as well as the GM Oshawa factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada.

  1. This is a very good looking car! I wish it was rear wheel driven or at least AWD with an available V8. Please don’t bring up the Commodore, it is the exact opposite of this car, BORING.
I think this is the best looking car that GM makes, and that includes Cadillac. The looks of this impala has aged very well.

    1. Styling is obviously subjective, but to me the Impala has nothing on the Cadillac sedans (ATS, CTS or CT6) or on the new LaCrosse.

But this is a good thing… because those vehicles are the cream of the crop in their segments as it relates to design.

  2. A good looking, comfortable, strong running sedan that deserves some attention by GM and to be kept around. So much nicer in almost every way to drive than a Malibu.

  3. Honestly just give it refresh with some new taillights & interior, updated engine & tranny. I love the look of this generation with the front and side detailing. AWD would be bonus too!

    1. I agree. I drove a rental Impala in 2014 and it hasn’t changed since then. It need a slight refresh to make it more attractive with more options, including a hybrid (Malibu system uprate) or a “start-stop” light hybrid to attach penny pinchers who want a full sized sedan with improved fuel economy. I expect a PHEV version by 2023.

  4. Glad to see this! The Impala is such a deserving car! Definitely a great value among GM’s large FWD sedans! While a small exterior refresh would be welcomed, I’m honestly quite content with the current design. Despite being four model years old now! However, an interior upgrade along with a revised powertrain update would definitely increase sales even more!

  5. Come on GM P/R use some of the Impala awards to promote the Impala. Give it a little facelift and more safety and tech.

  6. Too bad the don’t give the Impala some much needed TLC. Instead of it being the number 2 seller in its market it could be number 1.

  7. Having the Impala being the biggest car for Chevy it still is questionable as to why they don’t give it some support with some advertising . It sells fairly well with Consumers Best Buy accolades and sits in second place in its segment .
It’s in its 4th year of production and if it doesn’t get any attention with some type of refresh like the XTS is getting , GM is either gambling on the Malibu to take its place or it will become a fleet heavy car and that would be a shame .
It’s a solid car with some of the latest safety equipment and has a sporty look to it , and a name that has an image to it .

GM is banking on it’s sister car the LaCrosse will maybe sell a few hundred more by giving it the Avenir treatment and the other the XTS got a big freshening that will sell very well so what is up with Chevy . Both of these two cars continue on for a bit ;onger so the Impala could use it’s own updating .

  8. GM could so easily gain another 5 years of life out of this car with continued sales increases with but a few changes and refreshes. They could do the same tricks they did with the LaCrosse and lose 200-300 LBS of weight, substitute the 3.6 and 9 speed from the new Traverse in place of the old LFX and 6 speed, freshen the styling and interior and add some of the latest safety tech and advertise it.
