The GM Authority Take
The Bolt EV continues to rack up sales (albeit in relatively small numbers) and set new sales records. In fact, it has set a new U.S. sales record in each of the last seven months. We expect sales of the electric vehicle to continue growing over the next several months as availability improves and customers learn about this all-new vehicle.
Notably, the Bolt outsold the Chevy’s other new energy vehicle – the Chevrolet Volt, as well as the Nissan Leaf, which is seeing depressed sales due to the launch of  the second generation model. The Bolt also outsold the BMW i3, whose sales grew an impressive 55 percent to 686 units during the month.

About Chevrolet Bolt EV
The Bolt EV is the first mass-produced, all-electric vehicle from GM’s Chevrolet brand. The small EV went on sale in December 2016 as a 2017 model in two launch states (California and Oregon) as production of the vehicle was being ramped up. In August 2017, the Bolt became available nationwide across the U.S., which is a full month ahead of schedule.
For its second, 2018 model year, the Bolt EV receives a handful of small changes that consist of replacing the heated steering wheel with the automatic heated steering wheel as a standalone option and on the Comfort & Convenience Package, and deleting the front passenger seatback map pocket as standard equipment on 2LT trim level.
Currently, the Bolt EV is built exclusively at the GM Orion Assembly factory in Michigan.

This is pretty remarkable given that General Motors and Chevrolet has spent very little if nothing in advertising for the Bolt, there’s no ‘real people’ commercial for the Chevrolet Bolt as you might see for other Chevy vehicles and you’ve got to wonder how are people supposed to learn about the Chevrolet Bolt if Chevy doesn’t advertise their vehicle; then again, those in a market for a long distance EV know unlike one of their competitors who has been experiencing difficulty building their EV.. the Chevrolet Bolt is available at their local Chevrolet dealership.
I would like to know the impact Bolt has had on Prius.
The prius is not an electric vehicle. That’s why no comparison.
… except that’s not the point. The Prius is branded as the ‘green’ car. But like the Volt it’s not a Bolt. What GM needs to do is brake the Prius brand as the go-to ‘green’ car.
Hi John, The Prius Prime (a plug-in hybrid) sales have gone down in October from 1899 in September down to 1626 in October, so I think The Chevy Bolt is making a negative impact on Prius Prime numbers. In fact the Chevy Bolt is now outselling the Prius Prime for 2017!!!!!!!!!! Total Bolt 2017 sales = 17,083. Total Prius Prime 2017 sales = 16,682. I don’t think the bolt will have higher sales until we see a cuv version. Then people will buy in much higher numbers
Do you think a performance version of the bolt would effect sales?
No. The Bolt is peppy enough. I own one and it is much faster than our old turbo charged Buick Encore. The Bolt can go from 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. However, I do think your CUV idea would sell more. In fact Buick is already coming out with a CUV version of the Bolt in 2019 that will look similar to their Encore. Here is the article: insideevs dot com/exclusive-next-gm-ev-to-be-bolt-based-buick-crossover
Can the current bolt setup be used in a cuv without any major changes? Does it have enough power for a bigger vehicle?
Dear Brian, I think the article indicated that it will be used as a platform for other cars. I think the Buick version it will be a little slower 0-60mph and not get as much range as the Bolt. But it is two years away, so they may put a larger battery in it, but I think it’s power will be adequate for a CUV. I think most everyday people need and want more range in an electric car so they can take longer trips if they want to and not be afraid of running out of energy. I’m waiting for GMs RWD electric. Not sure why they’re keeping them FWD. Teslas are RWD and sportier as a result. im guessing we’ll see some new RWD evs in the near future
Dear Megatron, you maybe waiting a long time. The Bolt platform was designed as a front wheel car. Making a rear wheel performance design means redesigning the entire car. If you have not already, I suggest you actually test drive a Bolt and see how peppy it is for yourself. I can see Chevy coming out with an all-electric Corvette (and/or Camaro) to compete with Tesla in the performance arena. And I can see Cadillac coming out with an all-electric performance luxury CUV or sedan. I think any high performance long range electric car is going to be expensive and at least a couple years away for GM.
Their Canadian sales would be more if they actually produced. My local chevy is limited to two bolts a year, and they currently have 4 reservations. I had to go ta dealer over 100 kms away to get on a waiting list where I will hopefully see one by february. I put my deposit down in september.
