The GM Authority Take
ATS sales continue to suffer as a result of newer, more modern and more competitive rivals, while the Cadillac compact entry soldiers on as the oldest vehicle in its class and nearly non-existent marketing support.
This series of events has led the ATS family to come in second-to-last last in terms of cumulative sales volume in its segment, behind BMW 3/4 series in first place with 7,678 sales, Mercedes-Benz C-Class in second with 5,996 deliveries, Audi A4/A5 family with 4,719 sales in third, Infiniti Q50/Q60 in fourth with 3,700 deliveries, Lexus IS/RC in fifth with 2,800 deliveries, and the Volvo 60 series in sixth with 1,392 units. ATS sales did, however, finish ahead of the segment newcomer, the Alfa Romeo Giulia, which came in last place with 726 deliveries, though the Alfa Romeo brand has limited recognition and a tiny retail network.
What’s more, the ATS also posted the highest cumulative sales drop in its segment in the United States. The closest was the Audi A4 (down 33.3 percent), Infiniti Q50 (down 24.34 percent) as well as the Lexus RC (down 23.4 percent) and Lexus IS (down 21.8 percent).
We attribute the steep decrease in U.S. ATS sales volume to the following three factors:
- The age of the current model: though the ATS is a solid car, it is also the oldest in its segment, and that age shows when the vehicle is stacked against its most direct rivals. The product’s negative attributes also include various refinement items and details, such as the cabin and the powertrain (specifically the 2.0L Turbo LTG engine and 8-speed transmission). The vehicle does, however, excel in terms of driving dynamics, in-vehicle technology, and safety.
- A lack of marketing support: the ATS sees extremely little advertising from Cadillac, thereby decreasing awareness of the model and negatively impacting its performance for potential new customers.
- The inability to retain existing ATS owners: Cadillac was somewhat successful in getting new customers to try the ATS, but has not been as successful in retaining these customers for another ATS lease or purchase… either as a result of product-related reasons or being out-marketed by competitors, with customers switching to rival luxury brands in the segment.
As such, we do not foresee ATS sales picking until its replacement – believed to be called the CT3 – arrives in the 2019-2020 timeframe.

About Cadillac ATS

Cadillac ATS family
The Cadillac ATS is a range of compact luxury cars that includes the ATS Sedan, ATS Coupe, and high-performance ATS-V variants of each model. The vehicle slots under the midsize Cadillac CTS and a full-size Cadillac CT6.
Currently in its first generation, the ATS was introduced for the 2013 model year. The vehicle is based on the regular-length wheelbase variant of the GM Alpha platform. A longer variant of the same architecture underpins the third-generation Cadillac CTS and sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro.
For the 2018 model year, the ATS gets a new exterior color, an automatic heated steering wheel, the all-new CUE 3.0 infotainment system, and the deletion of several features such as the Carbon Black Package, and more.
The vehicle is expected to be replaced by an entirely new, next-genreation model called Cadillac CT3 for either the 2019 or 2020 model year. As such, the 2018 model year ATS could be the last year of the current, first-gen model.
For North American markets, the Cadillac ATS is built exclusively at the GM Lansing Grand River factory in Michigan operated by GM USA. For the Chinese market, the ATS is sold exclusively as an extended wheelbase model called the ATS-L. That model is built at the Jinqiao South factory operated by GM China.

Oh my God the sky is falling. GM needs to dump a ton of money in these cars now so they can replace it in a year……
They need to add a V8 now too so they can sell 409 more cars and take sales from the CTS v.
There I got both sides aut of the way for everyone lol!
Actually I V8 wouldn’t be a bad idea, I’ve heard of/ know a couple people who bought a C-class because it came with a V8, the ATS would surely take some of these sales if it had one of the worlds be performance V8s, ya know, the same one from the Vette.
Cadillac is a second rate company selling second rate vehicles. Cadillac has more dealers than all the other brands combined. Luxury buyers are generally successful people. Successful people are generally smart people. Smart people don’t want GM vehicles.
Judging by your comment, you are not one of those “smart” people. Too bad for you.
This is not right. I have had three CTS models and have had no PROBLEMS with any one of them. I like American made cars and especially GM ones. I want a NAME PLATE at least indicative of American made. I know many parts are made elsewhere, but at least the NAME PLATE THAT is representative of MADE IN AMERICA. Isn’t this what our President is pushing? (for those who support him…..)
But that is not what the liberals want. Anything that will destroy the US and any things good. They are on a mission to destroy. Pretty short sighted.
It was 30 years ago when I worked as a stockbroker I read a report that the liberal establishment was out to destroy GM, and they would take it BK to do it.
I have been doing my best to frustrate them by selling Cadillac ever since.
JDN is no different in his management style. An outsider who cares nothing for Cadillac,he is out to ruin it, his sales figures prove he is on the right path.
Things are getting a little grim at Cadillac–desperate need for some new models–hope the service departments can keep them in business until then.
Drew, paging Drew….
Here, I’ll get him.
“Hey, is that Melody Lee over there soliciting the opinions of wealthy white collar people instead of working-class mid-westerners?”
Hey Grawbuddy, laugh all you want, it doesn’t change the fact that the XTS and Escalade make more $ for Cadillac than all other models combined (probably). And which demographic primarily buys the XTS?
The Escalade is a lucky success. Was and always has been. There is nothing special about the vehicle.
The XTS serves its purpose of being a carry-over model for the legacy Cadillac customer. You can’t build a brand on a car like the XTS. It also is the only Cadillac model being offered to livery clients and has the highest percentage of fleet sales of any Cadillac product. So don’t get all gung ho on the XTS.
Provide some sources as it relates to the XTS making more money than the ATS, CTS, CT6, XT5 please. Before you start a reply, you won’t be able to because that information doesn’t exist in public. Even alex who worked for GM can’t get his hands on it. So don’t make comments that you can’t prove or back up.
Cadillac managed this destruction perfectly.
Unnecessary
The ATS is a mediocre little car not worthy of wearing the Cadillac name.
Not really, the ATS is a good car, just not the car for the Cadillac customers. Trying to make a product hoping it will generate business where there is none didn’t work now did it?
The ATS is a really good car. To say that it is a bad car shows you have never driven one or been in the vicinity of one. That said, it is behind the segment stalwarts at this point which makes it less desirable.
Outside of that, the customers are there for this car but the execution in attracting them fell short. Also, it won’t take one car model or one generation to attract buyers. It will take several, as Cadillac is facing an uphill battle in terms of brand, consideration and product. This is a long term game that we are just now starting to see play out with the products and business wide changes delivered by JdN and his team.
From now on the ATS should be offered as only the ATS-V in sedan form and get rid of the coupe .
These numbers are not a suprize at all , but it’s tough seeing Cadillac getting kicked in the A$$ by all of the other cars in the segment .
Plus why waste money on advertising it’s way to late for that .
You don’t understand this business, do you?
The current car line is long paid for and any additional sale units are pure profit minus COGs.
Learn. Think. Comment. You skipped both of the first steps.
Silence is golden .
There are alot of judges on this site lately . When you are selling less than a thousand cars a month and translates to a 42% drop in sales why waste money on advertising the car when it is being replaced very soon . Save those advertising dollars for the new model . That has always been a subject for debate on how Cadillac didn’t really spend the money for print ads or on the WWW and even on T.V commercials . There was hardly any marketing support for the car .
Business 101 .
Now let’s us ‘ think ” a moment …….. ” There is nothing special about the Escalade ” !?! The facts are it is ” so special ” that Cadillac has decided not to change it’s name with an alpha numeric one . The Escalade is their halo car right
now . Have you ever driven one or sat in one or at the very least even come in contact with one ? This SUV not only makes the new Lincoln Navigator look like a 90’s bling mobile and can stand up to any other high end truck in it’s segment .
Plus the XTS which was suppose to be on GM’s chopping block has been refreshed to look a bit more like the bigger brother the XT6 . And you are right the XTS is exactly meant for that ” legacy Cadillac Customer ” . And why not its selling and it’s just more cash in GM’s pocket from a post bankruptcy car that was hurried into production after the DTS and STS were no longer being built . It replaced both cars and with the new refresh looks in my opinion awesome.
So lets see a bit more comments on the subject at hand and less judging on comments from others .
