The GM Authority Take
October was the first month that the Envision saw a drop in U.S. sales volume on a year-over-year basis.
The performance places it in third, or second-to-last place in terms of cumulative October sales volume behind the Lexus NX and Acura RDX but ahead of the Lincoln MKC.
We attribute the Envision’s October sales decrease to a potential decrease in fleet deliveries.
Despite the lackluster October performance, year-to-date Envision sales are outpacing the segment.
We expect Envision sales to grow in the coming months as long as the market continues to favor crossovers and Buick is capable of keeping up with demand for the vehicle. Whether the Envision can catch up to Lexus and Acura sales remains to be seen.

About Buick Envision
The Buick Envision is a compact crossover that slots above the subcompact Buick Encore and below the full-size Buick Enclave. The current, first-generation Envision was introduced for the 2016 model year. The vehicle is based on a variant of the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt.
The Envision launched with a relatively steep starting price of $42,995 in 2016, since it was available only in the two highest trim levels and with the most potent turbo 2.0L LTG engine. The 2017 model introduced several lower-end trim levels, enabling the starting price to drop to $34,990.
The Buick Envision is built exclusively at the GM Dong Yue factory operated by GM China.

I think the Envision has a chance. What I think could boost that is an mid-cycle update and the inclusion of an Avenir model. So far i think stands well on its own.
It has a chance? It has already solidified itself in the segment.
Add in some improvements to the product and continue improving the image of Buick as a brand and you’ll see even greater success.
Congratulations to GM. The number 1 importer of Chinese vehicles to U.S. I bet the jobless ex-autoworkers in Flint are proud of Buick. MAGA !
And also the #1 producer of vehicles in the US.
Where was the keyboard made that you used to write your comment?
It’s a global economy. Get used to it.
The Chinese will buy 3.8 million GM vehicles this year, and another 1.2 million Ford vehicles.
Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Escalades, Lincoln Continentals, Cadillac Vs are only built in the U.S. and are all sold in China.
Does China still place a 35% import duty on vehicles made outside the US? And SAIC keeps a substantial portion of the proceeds?
The trade agreement has evolved – initially, it was why margins in China were less that domestic margins.
Maybe that’s changed (again).
Yes, there still is a hefty import tax on automobiles (and other goods) not produced locally in China.
SAIC keeps 50 percent of the profits… GM keeps the rest.
From what I can tell, the trade agreement with China in the auto sector has not evolved at all… which is why margins continue to be really low in the country and why automakers have no other choice but to produce locally or face the hefty import tariffs.
I think the wise consumer is starting to wonder why this car has the older grille. Also compared to an RDX or the Lexus it looks like of bland. It has so much more potential.
It’s funny how not even a few years ago, the extremely boring and blandly-styled Lexus RX and Acura MDX were all the sales rage… and consumers didn’t mind it. But now, some are describing the Envision using the same words (bland, boring)… and are positioning this turn of events as a negative.
Let’s face it guys, the consumer doesn’t even know about an “older grille”. Heck, the Envision itself looks good… by no means ugly… and by other means elegant and trendy. Are we now saying that consumers buy a crossover based on the grille alone?
Envision upgrades are already on these way/there.
People are realizing BUICK is making cars in China , Buick is an AMERICAN car company that should be made in AMERICA . yes things are made in china and most of them break . also there are AMERICAN “S that are looking for work right here in AMERICA
As Zach mentions in the comment directly below yours people do know where its made and they bought 30,000 of them so far this far. We have to compete like we used not just think we get to make it because Buick is an American car company. All companies will build their products where it makes the most sense for them. Buick’s market in China is far bigger than here.
Last thought. My Iphone doesn’t break. Do you know where its made.
No, people are not realizing nor do they care where it’s made. We can debate on whether or not this is good or bad all day long, but the bottom line is that its origin doesn’t matter nearly as much as it did three decades ago.
The notion of a product being made in China and it automatically being of a low or poor quality is a fallacy. The point is not where a product is made, but to what standards.
The Apple iPhone is the highest-quality consumer good in the world, yet it is made in China. The Envision was developed by GM for global consumption in the U.S…. and it is made by GM in adhering to GM’s global manufacturing quality standards, policies and processes/procedures.
Again, this fact might not be popular… but “made in China” ≠ poor quality… though it most certainly did decades ago.
The Envision is actually a nice looking crossover . GM’s expectations were to sell atleast 30,000 unit and it has done better than that . Didn’t they also say at launch that if it did sell in those numbers they would consider building them here in the states ?
It does need the new family grill though , it looks old sitting next to other SUV’s with the more modern Buick grill .
A friend of mine recently bought one and they love it . I ask about it being built in China and they didn’t care as they said everything is built there . And my union friends are of course don’t feel the same .
I wish it was built here in America but its a car that is to small for me anyway so I woundn’t buy one .
I notice that this morning there is an article about changes coming to the 2019 version of the Envision.
I guess I should have said’ I ‘would not want the car with the old grille. I assume anyone could go to the Buick website and see that all of the new cars have a different grille. If you don’t your probably the old Buick customer.
The changes on the 2019 sound great. I will wait to see pictures.
In respect to the RDX, Lexus, etc. I thought the first versions were kind of boring BUT sold by car companies I have purchased from before who offered me great quality. My last Buick was in 1981 when I needed a huge car to carry samples. And it was’nt so great as I remember. I am now very excited about the new buick but have an idea of what I want in my mind. The first version wasnt it.
Still they have sold them very well which is great.
