The Camaro team knocked the basics out of the park with the sixth-generation car, and one after another, its variants continue to impress. The latest addition is the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE and it faced its toughest competition yet recently: Road and Track’s Performance Car of the Year.
How’d it do? Second place, a fine achievement considering the pack of cars it performed against. Let’s run down some of the most notable. There’s the Lamborghini Huracán Performante, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R, Porsche 911 GT3, Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and more. The only car to rise above the track-honed Camaro was the McLaren 720S. Yes, a Camaro threw down with a McLaren. How times have changed.
Two editors cast first-place votes for the Camaro ZL1 1LE over the 720S, but the McLaren ultimately squeezed ahead. In this case, second place doesn’t look so bad.
Pony car? try STALLION CAR!
I was thinking. We know the z28 is coming back, how’s about bringing the z24 back for the performance model of the four cylinder camaro base model. What do you think Chevy?
The very fact that Ford’s Mustang or FCA’s Challenger weren’t on the list tells you why the Chevrolet Camaro is the King of the Pony Cars.
I could see the GT350R included but the Challenger is on an LA chassis. Which is an updated Mercedes Benz LX leftover.
Not so good in the turns I guess, maybe why we’ve never seen it at the Ring.
Like I’ve said before,
If you can’t make it turn, make it burn (Demon)

“Welcome to the fifth year of PCOTY. As in the past, competitors must be new or significantly revised for 2017”
Won’t see anything from Ford that qualifies till 2018+
Or 2020+ for a new FCA product.
Would have been interesting to see how it stacked up to the competition.
So great your review 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE Runner-Up In Performance Car Of The Year Competition
They should add to the comparison price! Cars that are priced similar to each other should be compared.
Congratulations to Chevrolet for that award, especially against such a hard competition. Although the McLaren 720S won first place, you can buy two Camaros for one 720S and still have change left over for gasoline!
McLaren 720S is $283,076 even if the Camaro cost $70k you could have 4
Hell, I’d buy a ZL1 and a ZL1 1LE and a Truck and a Caddy, and still be able to afford repairs. Don’t even want to think about McLaren repair prices.
Let’s be honest, this isn’t a pure performance competition. This is an overall evaluation of new intros. The Honda Civic type R got in third and Lexus LC 500 in fourth.
By As-tested pricing, the *only* vehicle that was cheaper was the Civic Type R.
The four faster cars around the track cost *at least* $122,855k more. That’s an absurd amount of performance for comparatively very little money.
