Wayne Taylor Racing’s dominating No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R. didn’t even have to finish lats weekend’s Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta to win the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the Prototype class. The car, driven by brothers Ricky and Jordan Taylor, won each of the first five races this season, and went on to podium twice more throughout the following events, giving the team a massive lead in the standings that delivered them the team championship despite a disappointing result at Road Atlanta.
Securing the championship win is a feeling Jordan Taylor already knows, but for his older brother Ricky, it’s something brand new.
“Jordan and I did the best we could, but I think it really comes down to the team,” Ricky Taylor said after the race. “Cadillac and Dallara worked together to get the car ready on track in September last year and then [we were] the first team with the car testing, learning.
“All of our guys were really open to learning how this new style of the cars work and what makes them fast. Then down to the mechanics, they’re like specialists in each of their areas and they’ve really shown this year how good people can all step up and do their job and really create a separation from the rest of the field.”
Meanwhile, the other Cadillac DPi-V.R. in the race – the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Racing car – secured the 2017 Tequila Patron North American Endurance Cup at the race. That title encompasses just the four big endurance races in the IMSA SportsCar season: 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, Six Hours of the Glen, and Petit Le Mans. The No. 5 Cadillac was on-track to win the race, until a 60-second penalty was issued for creating an “unjustifiable risk” in the course of passing through traffic.
The car finished fifth, and Mustang Sampling Racing closed out the season in third in the team championship standings, just behind the No. 31 Cadillac DPi-V.R. of Whelen Engineering. Combined, the three Cadillac Prototype race cars won seven 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar events.
