The GM Authority Take

The Malibu’s September sales performance propelled it to third place in its segment behind the Toyota Camry (up 13 percent to 34,732 units) and Honda Accord (up 9.5 percent to 29,789 units) but ahead of all other segment contenders, including:

  • Ford Fusion (up 3.32 percent to 21,253 units; see Ford Fusion sales)
  • Nissan Altima (down 34 percent to 16,569 units)
  • Hyundai Sonata (down 35 percent to 9,889 units)
  • Kia Optima (up 10.79 percent to 9,982 units)
  • Volkswagen Passat (down 27 percent to 4,636 units)
  • Subaru Legacy (down 35 percent to 3,902 units)
  • Mazda6 (down 35 percent to 3,036 units)
  • The now discontinued Chrysler 200 (down to 705 units; see Chrysler 200 sales)
  • GM’s own Buick Regal, which is about to see an all-new model (down 58 percent to 702 units; see Buick Regal sales)

We attribute the Malibu’s growth in September sales to the following factors:

  1. A competitive model that represents an attractive overall package
  2. Attractive incentives on existing inventory units
  3. A sharp increase in fleet sales (not confirmed but suspected)

About Chevrolet Malibu

2018 Chevrolet Malibu Exterior 001

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan sold in most markets where Chevrolet has a business presence. It is currently Chevrolet’s second-largest sedan, in the U.S. and Canada, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and compact Chevrolet Cruze but under the full-size Chevrolet Impala.

The current, ninth-generation model was introduced in 2016. As such, the 2018 Malibu represents the third model year of the vehicle. The model rides on the GM E2 platform shared with the Buick Regal, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, and upcoming Cadillac XT4.

A refresh of the Malibu is on the way for what we believe to be the 2019 model year. The refreshed model is generally expected to contain a new front facia and perhaps other changes and updates as well.  See more on the 2019 Chevy Malibu.

The Chevrolet Malibu is built at the GM Faifax factory in Kansas City operated by GM USA.

  1. Chevrolet’s Malibu front nose reminds me of the Camaro as it appears the designers wanted to make the vehicle as short as possible and reduce overhang; but I would prefer a bit more overhang if it would allow designers to give the car a more aggressive stance.
