The GM Authority Take

The launch of the all-new 2018 Chevy Equinox continues to pay off, as the vehicle posted its highest September sales ever in both the United States and Canada after doing the same in August.

The performance gives the Equinox the highest growth rate in its segment, placing it in fourth place out of thirteen, behind the Toyota RAV4 (up 44 percent to 42,395 units), Nissan Rogue (up 47 percent to 38,969 units) and Honda CR-V (down 2.91 percent to 30,956 units). The Equinox finished the month with more sales than the Ford Escape (up 2 percent to 25,575 units), Subaru Forester (16.5 percent to 13,262 units), Jeep Cherokee (down 29 percent to 12,775 units), Subaru Crosstrek (up 51 percent to 12,491 units), Mazda CX-5 (up 32.5 percent to 12,440 units), Jeep Compass (up 75 percent to 11,356 units), as well as the Equinox’s platform mate – the GMC Terrain (up 61 percent to 9,116 units). The Mitsubishi Outlander (up 50 percent to 2,895 units) and Volkswagen Tiguan (down 59 percent to 1,226 units) brought up the remainder of the segment.

We attribute the Equinox’s September sales growth to three factors:

  1. A competitive all-new model that’s in high demand
  2. A growing crossover segment as a result of a shift in consumer purchase dynamics
  3. An easy year-over-year sales figure on which to post an increase, as Equinox sales decreased 29 percent to 15,261 units in September 2016

With the strike at the GM CAMI factory in Canada over, we expect to see Equinox deliveries continue to climb as a result of the first two reasons.

About Chevrolet Equinox

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Redline Edition exterior - 2017 Chicago Auto Show 004

The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover. It slots above the Chevrolet Trax and below the Chevrolet Traverse. It will also be positioned below the rumored to be the future Chevrolet Blazer.

The first-generation Equinox ran from the 2005-2009 model years and was based on the first-generation Theta platform. The second-generation Equinox was offered from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. Both the first- and second-generation models were “tweeners”, in that they straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The third-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC TerrainChevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its two predecessors, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.

The third-generation, 2018 and newer Equinox features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.

The Chevrolet Equinox is built primarily at the GM CAMI factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada. Two GM Mexico facilities – GM San Luis Potosi and GM Ramos Arizpe – also share in producing the vehicle for North America.

  1. Good job Chevy! Stiff competition here…make sure you guys keep tweaking it to ensure it remains competitive at a fair price. Simplify option packages.

  2. Great month but don’t expect a repeat in October; inventories are very low coming out of the CAMI strike and will take time to recover. The Mexican plants are still having trouble ramping up production and once built shipments from Mexico to the volume markets take a long, long time.

  3. Great to see the Canadian union cave to GM and get back to work so the Equinox has a chance…I guess reality set in and as soon as GM said it wasnt fooling around and could move production elsewhere (thanks for standing up to the unions, Ms. Barra!), they sudddenly agreed. Proof the unions don’t have the power anymore. The 1970s are over and not coming back…

  4. Great to see my comment “is awaiting moderation” after I called out a certain poster on here for their constant left-wing, anti-Trump blabber and propaganda. This is the exact sort of cencoring behavior why Breitbart dot com and Drudge Report have a massive following and President Trump was elected. You really are idiots because you are just pushing average Americans against you.

Old Trombone is actually a certain writer/ blogger on this site, who maybe needs to be named and have his address shown to prove it. Should I?

  5. Proud owner of a 2018 1.5L Equinox AWD Premier with the “Sun, Sound & Navigation” package here – built at the CAMI plant in Ontario, Canada.

Here is what the 2018+ Equinox still needs when the next update occurs:

    1. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
    2. The FULL suite of safety equipment for ALL TRIM LEVELS as the Toyota RAV4
and 2017 CR-V (EX+ trim levels) come with.
    3. Continue to Improve fuel economy
    4. A HYBRID version
    5. Add all the above listed items without increasing the price. Top of the line RAV4 and CR-Vs are available for thousands of $$$ less than the Equinox.

It is rumored that Honda is planning to introduce the 2018 CR-V for the U.S. market in a hybrid version.

Direct competitors Nissan Rogue and the upcoming Mazda CX-5 already / will feature a hybrid version of their most popular compact SUVs.

If GM / Chevrolet will aggressively continue to upgrade the Equinox / Terrain (without increasing the price), they’ll have a top-notch competitor with which to (potentially) beat the competition.

  6. Chevrolet Equinox is up 80-percent compared with September 2016; but for this calendar year.. June 2017 sales of the Equinox was the best so far at 29,182 followed by August 2017 where Chevrolet sold 28,245 units; but there’s no doubt that the Chevrolet Equinox is a success and General Motors may need all of the production it can get from CAMI and the Ramos Arizpe facility in Mexico.
