The GM Authority Take

Colorado sales continue to grow, with the model’s September sales performance enabled it to place second in its segment behind the Toyota Tacoma (up 15.85 percent to 18,058 units) and ahead of the Nissan Frontier (down 32 percent to 5,111 units) as well as its platform mate, the GMC Canyon (down 0.92 percent to 2,922 units; see GMC Canyon sales).

We attribute the Colorado’s sustained upward sales trend to the following two factors:

  1. A competitive model that represents an attractive overall package, and
  2. Attractive incentives on existing inventory units

About Chevrolet Colorado

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Exterior 014

The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck. It is currently Chevrolet’s smallest pickup truck in the U.S. and Canada, slotting under the full-size Chevrolet Silverado. In Mexico, the Colorado slots above the compact Chevrolet Montana but below the Silverado/Cheyenne (the name for some of Silverado’s trim levels in Mexico).

The current model was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Colorado nameplate. The model rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the GMC Canyon, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The 2018 Chevy Colorado represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. The off-road-specific Colorado ZR2 was launched for the 2017 model year. However, the Colorado family continues to lack various features asked by many present and potential customers, such as a moonroof and a range-topping LTZ or High Country trim level.

The Chevrolet Colorado is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA.

  1. Sales of the Colorado are still far from the ones of the Tacoma especially for yearly sales. Gm has a better product but still behind. Is it because the Colorado is newer than the Tacoma, or because of less promotion, or the reputation of Toyota and the Tacuma. I remember a TopGear episode in which they just maltreated a Toyota pick up in it was still working.Gm just need this kind of advertisement to show how god its product is.

    1. “GM has a better product”. Post of the day. LMFAO!

If you prefer the outdoors over the service shop of your local dealership, you will pick the Tacoma. If you want a Texas built truck without filthy UAW hands on it, you will pick the Tacoma. If you know how to use a clutch, you will pick the Tacoma. If you want resale value, you will pick the Tacoma.

Don’t take my word for it, US Special Forces chose the Taco for Afghanistan. Unavailability of trustworthy repair shops, ya know.

      1. Texas?? True, but you seem to have neglected the fact that over 60% of the Tacoma’s are imported from Tijuana Mexico.

  2. Hey the truck is just starting it’s 4th year.

Like I warn many about Cadillac one year and one model is not going to change everything.

Again here time and steady growth through trust and improving product will be the path.

The Twins web site is one filled with buyers

Some are from the S10 era, many SUV owners, some from full size trucks and a growing number of people from competitors products including a growing number of Taco owners not happy with their last truck.

Taco owners are growing tired of 5ne lack of advancement with the engine and cabin. Many hate the seating.

Next add in the new Nissan, Honda or the Coming Ford and Hyundai. This will be a very competitive segment.

GM already has redone the drive train and next we should see a major refresh as soon as next year.

GM also makes good money on these as there is little in discounts and incentives.

For a vehicle many claimed GM would fail at in a dying segment they have done very well globally with this truck.

  3. Might note too what is left out here for yearly totals on the 17 model year is it was a short one.

The 17 started production in late Nov and finished in June. The new drive train delayed intro.

The dealer supplies were also short much of the year.

Many Chevy dealers has 10 or less on hand and GMC often 6 or less. I had a hard Tim shopping as so few were around last year.

Last fall many waited for the 17 and the new engine, tranny and models in the ZR2 and Denali.

  4. I have been leaning towards the Chevy/GMC over the Tacoma. Here are the pros and cons I am weighing:

From the factory the ZR2 with front and rear lockers, wider track, and suspension is pretty nice, but they cost too much since they are not discounted enough and ultimately over time I think I can build a better performing off road truck starting with an LT or TRD Offroad dialed in to exactly how my truck will be built out with a camper shell. The challenge for me is 1,500 lbs payload.

    Pros Chevy/GMC
V6 is quicker than the Tacomas based on my test drives.
The Colorado/Canyon seems better built in terms of being more solid, but see crash ratings.
After market support from ARB, Icon, King
Super Charger option for V6 from RIPP, although still waiting for 2017 + compatible.
If you do not live in California the diesel has good tuning options, but GM should do it for you and bump up the HP to 210 +.
    Cons Chevy/GMC
Lower crash test ratings than Tacoma for extended cab models
Hardly any active safety features – no blind spot, no active cruise control and braking
I would prefer an electronic locker to GM’s “automatic locker”.
I will need to remove the antenna and rewire it because I will have a shell over the cab
    Diesel needs more horsepower
Shock attachment on axle reduces clearance and is more vulnerable
What is it with color choices ? Firetruck Red, Femme Blue Metalic, or non colors of several shades of black and grey metalic or white. They killed the brown. I like the Deepwood Green Metalic but as of yet it is not available on the Canyon. Have you ever seen the color choices available on a Sprinter ? Sprinter has you covered.

    Tacoma Pros
Electronic Locking Rear Differential – TRD Off Road
Gimmicky but probably useful from time to time Crawl Control.
    Better clearance re: shocks
Better Crash Test Scores overall, but check the details they are pretty close except for a couple of specifics.
I would expect cost of ownership to be less, and I would have more faith in a Toyota mechanic, and Toyota standing behind their product.

    Cons Tacoma
To date you can not super charge or increase the performance of the engine and it needs more power.
Recall and no official clarification as to why Tacoma owners no longer need to worry about leaking differential.
Interior build seems more flimsy than Chevy/GMC. Try grabbing the door side armrests with one hand and see how much they wiggle/move. Glove compartment is like Rubbermaid although Colorado not much better.
They better not put a fake air scoop on the TRD Off Road.

Someone mentioned it earlier and I agree with them 200%, if you are paying $35K – $40k or more the build quality and materials used in these pickup truck interiors, safety features, just everything is not worth what they are asking. I mean go test drive an Audi A4 with a $40K sticker and tell me why in the hell a Tacoma or Colorado/Canyon is worth what they are charging. It may not cut it off road but for driving in snow, twisty roads, and performance that will give you the grins in an automobile with leather interior and the latest in technology and safety features, I think pickup trucks are rip off. I have not purchased an American vehicle in over forty years. My Japanese and German cars have been superior in reliability, performance, overall quality, and longevity. This is the first time I have considered an American brand and the Tacoma is essentially American truck too or at least if I go with the Tacoma it will be from Texas or I will not be getting one.
