The GM Authority Take
The 13 percent increase in September Camaro deliveries enabled the model to outpace its closest competitors as well as the segment as a whole. By comparison, Dodge Challenger sales decreased 16.11 percent to 4,780 units while Ford Mustang sales decreased 9 percent to 5,847 units. As such, the Camaro took first place in the mainstream sports car sales race in September, ahead of the Mustang in second and Challenger in third. With the Camaro in first, order has seemingly been restored to the pony car world… at least for the time being.
We attribute the positive change in September Camaro sales to attractive incentives for the 2017 model, which supports our theory that the biggest issue holding back sixth-gen Camaro sales is the higher pricing structure. In the first nine months of 2017, U.S. Camaro sales have decreased 1.48 percent to 53,727 units. All kinds of reasons have been provided for the ongoing decline in Camaro sales performance, but the most prominent is the higher pricing of the sixth-gen Camaro, supposedly due to a strategic change within GM to sell fewer models at a higher profit. What’s more, with the exception a bonus cash offers along with specific incentives to lure Mustang owners, Chevrolet has largely refrained from piling incentives onto the sixth-gen Camaro while the competition has not been as disciplined.

September sales of the pony car segment consisting of the Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger decreased 3.46 percent to 18,057 units. In the first nine months of the year, segment sales decreased 12.8 percent to 168,199 units with the Mustang leading in overall sales volume in first place, the Camaro in second, and the Challenger in third. As such, it would appear that the Camaro’s overall sales performance shows that the vehicle is making a slow turnaround after the depressed sales performance of 2016 and 2017.
About Chevrolet Camaro
Based on the GM Alpha platform, the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro represents the third model year of the sixth-generation Camaro. Though the vehicle is the newest and often considered to be the most competitive in its segment, it has seen slowing sales compared to its predecessor – a circumstance believed to be the result of being more expensive.

A refresh to the Camaro is coming for the 2019 model year. The updated model is expected to bring freshened front and rear ends and a revised trim level structure to bring about a lower price point for the sixth-gen Camaro.

It would be interesting to see just how much each company profits from each model.
I would wager Ford and GM make about the same profit even at different volumes.
FCA with the large discounts will take in much less but then again they have invested so little in this car.
GM has the performance but unfortunately doesn’t have the appeal. The car is too similar to the 5th gen. I love the 6th, in SS trim is looks sinister, but the general public buying 2.0 and 3.6 models just see mild attitude and a lot of 5th gen.
They need a big mid-cycle exterior refresh for the Camaro, same as the full size trucks need the 2019s
Does having an all-new car that is recognized as such actually matter?
It didn’t stop the last-gen from continuing to sell like hotcakes through the end of its generation… the same can be said of the GM trucks, the Equinox and Terrain, etc.
I was wrong. Congratulations Camaro!
The new Camaro being tested in my ‘hood. Forget Challenger and Mustang, the right Camaro will run circles around snootcars that cost three times as much. It’ll be a tight fit in height if you are taller than the average woman but that’s a small price to pay for true pushrod activated magic.
Too bad I pay my bills and my credit score hovers around 830 despite median income, and I believe billion dollar companies should do the same. What GM did is criminal and the Average Joe would probably be in jail for doing the same. I don’t care if they are $1 short. You pay your debt. End of story.
Camaro is the best muscle car on the planet! Don’t see Ford ever catching up
I just wish they could raise the roof height by 1 1/2 inches and add more glass area.
As everything is now a crossover, a higher seating position with a better view would attract more buyers.
I realize that high speed performance numbers would be impacted, but still worth the trade off.
Agreed. If GM did this, they would attract even more potential buyers for the Camaro. It wouldn’t hurt the aggressive looks of the Camaro in the slightest.
When is GM going to wake up and realize that selling fewer cars at a high TAP doesn’t work . It does no good to have to idol a third of your assembly plant because you want to make more money by producing fewer cars . A plant that isn’t running at full capacity cost money and can ultimately hurt your bottom line .
Chevy should quit listening to Cadillac as we have seen what happens when you try this experiment . There is an image or conquest with these three pony cars and being number one has bragging rights . It’s completely different form other mass produced cars , there is still a car culture that is still alive and well in this country .
GM is doing to good a job with their camo for the Camaro . Living in the city where they are produced it’s not uncommon to see one cruising down I-96 E . Most people probably don’t really know what they are looking at as it passes them by , but ” I do ” . 😉
Sounds like someone can’t afford the higher prices
Mackey, I would love to see the retail and fleet sales for the Silverado and the f150 series for Sept. and year to date. Thanking you in advance.
