The GM Authority Take

Sales of the Buick Envision are continuing to grow, with both the U.S. and Canadian sales showing healthy growth. In addition, U.S. sales included an impressive 44 percent growth in retail sales.

The performance gives the Envision the highest growth rate in its segment, while placing it in last place in terms of cumulative September sales volume behind the Lexus NX  (up 7 percent to5,041 units), Acura RDX (down 6 percent to 3,693 units) and Lincoln MKC (up 18 percent to 2,456 units).

We attribute the Envision’s September sales performance to two factors:

  • A competitive product that has a lower entry level price compared to the 2016 model year Envision, and
  • An ongoing shift in consumer purchase dynamics that favors CUVs and SUVs over other vehicle types like sedans and coupes

Even so, the Envision’s cumulative sales volume continues to fall behind its primary competitors from Toyota’s Lexus, Honda’s Acura and FoMoCo’s Lincoln, though the Buick did catch up to those models in April, May and June thanks to an uptick in fleet sales.

We expect Envision sales to continue growing in the coming months as long as the market continues to favor crossovers and Buick is capable of keeping up with demand for the vehicle. Whether the Envision can catch up to Lexus and Acura sales remains to be seen.

The compact premium crossover segment grew about 9 percent in September. During the first nine months of 2017, the segment has seen a 30 percent growth rate to 132,018 units, with all models posting sales gains. The Envision had the highest sales gains of its segment, enabling it to close in on the Lexus and Acura offerings.

  1. “B….but but but…….it’s made in China! It was supposed to be sale-proof!”

    1. Exactly!

The Envision is a good vehicle engineered by GM globally and nobody cares where it’s made… country of origin only matters to those who still live in the 70s.

      Welcome to 2017.

      1. “Engineered by GM globally” and made in China. What could possibly go wrong? Those two fact just reek of quality. If one wants a good SUV buy a BMW or Mercedes. Engineered in Germany and made in the good old U.S.A. MAGA !

        1. How does it “reek” or (lack there of) of quality?

Are you aware of the standards behind GM’s global manufacturing practices, which include those in China? Or are you just talking out of your a$$?

          1. Just reading GM Authority posts….”GM Begins Exporting Chinese-Built Chevrolets to Mexico and Caribbean” GM is importing unsafe cars to Latin America that “Earned Zero Stars in Latin American Safety Tests”. But hey, that neatly goes along with the articles about the additional Lawsuits settlements over defective ignition switches and hundreds of American Deaths. GM has the morality of a den of snakes. Looks like you are talking out of your A$$.

      2. You say that “country of origin only matters to those that still live in the ’70’s”…..tell that to the thousands of US factory workers and automobile industry suppliers that are losing their jobs because people like you don’t seem to understand that the US needs manufacturing jobs to keep our economy going….but hey, hope you enjoy your foreign car and all the products produced in Asia that you constantly buy to support THEIR economy! Buy American products to support American families!!!

    2. Well, maybe it wouldn’t be in last place in the segment if they gave it a mild refresh and built it anywhere other than China.

  2. This car is a direct competitor to the Lincoln MKC. How do the sales compare to to the MKC?

    Reply
    1. It’s right there in the table and in the text… listed as “MKC”.

  3. Building the Buick Envision in the United States would create a lot of jobs; but building in countries like China and Mexico helps General Motors profit margins and greater stability when sales slow as you’ve got to wonder why Cadillac hasn’t stopped building their ATS, CTS and CT6 in the United States and simply import them from China.
