The GM Authority Take
Sales of the Buick Cascada are starting to fade, as the model faces competition from the Audi A3 Convertible. In addition, the ongoing shift in consumer purchase dynamics that favors CUVs and SUVs over other vehicle types like sedans, coupes and convertibles isn’t helping the model.
Even so, the Cascada was always meant as a vehicle to fill in “white space” for Buick, enabling it to change the perception of Buick as a brand and to attract new-to-brand customers. Numbers show that the model has done exactly that, with nearly 70 percent of Cascada customers being new to GM.
We expect Cascada sales to continue steady or decrease in the coming months as long as the crossover crazy persists.
About Buick Cascada
The Buick Cascada is a compact convertible. The current, first-generation Cascada was introduced for the 2016 model year. Essentially a rebadged Opel/Vauxhall Cascada, the vehicle is based on a variant of the GM Delta II platform shared with the Opel Astra and first-generation Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Volt and Opel Astra J.
For the 2018 model year, the Cascada gets three new exterior colors, two new convertible top colors and expanded availability of the Dark Effects Package.
The Buick Cascada is built exclusively at the GM-Opel Gliwice, Poland factory operated by GM/Opel Europe, which earlier this year was sold to PSA Groupe, along with all of Opel and Vauxhall.

How can anyone possibly expect this car to sell. I don’t remember that last time I saw an ad for it. Advertising sells…you don’t advertise you don’t sell !!!! Is anybody at GM Listening???? BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Toyota all selling like crazy and guess what? you can turn on the TV or open a magazine without seeing and advertisement for one or all of them. AVERTISING SELLS…ADVERTISING SELLS…ADVERTISING SELLS. There is a school of thought in the adverting community that says, for the message to sink in it must be repeated 3 times.
It was featured in not one, but two Super Bowl commercials – celebrity/athlete laden. And an online effort featuring Kimmy Schmidt – so, who knows what that cost?
Air time, production, OBJr, Cam Newton, super models, and the Kimmy Schmidt thing – someone decided high visibity/one-and-dones were the answer.
Maybe they brought people into showrooms as intended. But for now, Buick is all Encore, Enclave and Envision.
Don’t see much advertising for Buick lately, but the CUVs don’t seem to need it.
Its a good looking car. It does need to be about 5k lower in price. Of course this car is going to go away since GM sold Opel. But i’m sure its replacement could be made here in the states at a lower price.
Joe is right, but a new grill and revised instrument panel – tweak the lights in the back and it could boost sales and keep it around for a few more years. Fun model though if they can make it cost effective to continue production.
Buick’s Cascada has all of the right pieces that should have made it a success like being a convertible and having the LWC 1.6L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo that makes 200 horsepower; but the key factor on why most Americans don’t find the Cascada appealing is it’s name and appearance as it looks too much like an Opel and not enough like the Avista.
It looks better in person than in the photos but I find it rather awkward. Back end is too high and that mass makes the rear wheels look tiny. (This afflicts many GM designs. The windshield just looks all wrong to me – too tall, too much tilt.
Correct! Without big advertisement also no sales is not always correct. I bought my OPEL Cascada S (200HP) because I like the car and it’s not overpriced. An Audi A3, BMW 220i or Mercedes C 200 convertible does not interest me, since in Germany only a company car. OPEL Cascada owners are private customers! This is important because only private customers have a bond to the brand. I like OPEL and will soon buy an OPEL Adam Rocks S. A small car with CUVs look, but sportier. The OPEL Adam S are the regular successors of the former MINI Cooper S compressor. Cheaper, more beautiful, faster and more stable value. Women in Germany like to drive Adam.
