Having set a new monthly sales record for each of the past six months and on track to reach 20,000 sales for the 2017 calendar year, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is on a roll. But that’s the 2017 model we’re talking about. What about the 2018 Bolt?
The circumstances surrounding the 2018 model are rather curious: though dealers have full information about every 2018 model in the GM lineup (even about all-new vehicles that aren’t on sale yet, such as the 2018 Buick Regal), they have zero information about the 2018 Bolt. What’s more, dealers can place an order on every 2018 model year vehicle in the GM portfolio, except for the 2018 Bolt.
This chain of events leads us to believe that Chevy has something up its sleeve for the 2018 Bolt EV — and that it’s waiting to release this information.
At this point, we’d just be guessing about what the 2018 Bolt changes could entail, but our bets would be on either some or all of the following:
- Possible semi-autonomous driving technology
- Upgraded powertrain for a longer driving range
- Revised exterior color palette
- Revised interior color palette
- Revised trim levels and equipment groups
- Revised dashboard to address the reported glare issues
What would you like to see from the 2018 Bolt EV? Sound off in the comments below.
Update: we now know exactly what’s in store for the 2018 Chevy Bolt EV. Check it all out here.

1. Fix the blinding interior glare issue
2. All wheel drive and/or performance variant?
3. Autonomous software
New Gear Shifter?
Performance Boost and longer ranger really that’s it!
1) Wider, more comfortable front seats with better lumbar support and memorized settings
2) Offer all-wheel drive option to eliminate torque steer
3) Faster fast-charging (next generation of fast-chargers are more powerful)
4) Cell phone pocket should be wider–wide enough for iPhone 7+ with case
5) Back-up camera should be hi-res
6) Include smart cruise control in Premier trim line (competitors offer this at this price point)
7) Put LED lights around charging port to illuminate socket when it’s dark
The 2017 has too many hard plastic surfaces, marginal seats and no adaptive cruise control. In 2018 if they do provide adaptive cruise control then you will have to pay for leather. Most environmentally conscious buyers do not want leather.
#1 – Wider and longer seat bottoms in the front.
#2 – Faster charge rate. The advertised rates aren’t bad, but the management algorithms rarely allow those rates to occur. They seem disproportionately low comparing “C” stats to competitors’ packs.
#1 – Semi autonomous driving capability and/or better safety features. Current lane-change alert feature is almost useless
#2 – Much better touch screen for infotainment system. 2017 model one is crap.
#3 – Adaptive cruise control
#4 – More comfortable seats. Better lumbar support more adjustments on headrest
I’m parroting what others have already said, but maybe they’re listening:
1) Wide/more comfy front seats.
2) Rethink the infotainment interface. Why do I have to push that Home button to get to SXM channels? Maddening. [If I don’t, maybe someone will tell me nicely how to do so… 🙂 ]
3) Longer range/faster charging – this is a given.
4) Autonomous driving!
Chevrolet’s Bolt is a new vehicle and whatever glitches may exist will need to wait until a refreshing in 2019-2020 especially as sales for the Bolt have already eclipsed sales of the Volt (2,107 vs 1,445); the refreshing will fix the minor glitches like interior glare and the possibility of a battery upgrade for greater range as well as offsetting a more powerful electric motor option.
Whether the Bolt gets autonomous driving will depend on how well Cadillac’s Super-Cruise functions.
Higher top speed.
AWD and performance variant option.
I don’t own one yet, but those are the main two things missing that are at the top of my list.
I agree, I’m waiting to replace my 2010 CR-V AWD by a Volt exactly for the same reasons. Maybe the Bolt inerior also needs to be improved because the actual version looks very cheap with way too much hard plactic. And the interior is too clear, I prefer darker interiors.
Fix those terrible front seats. They need to be 2″ wider and lose the giant steel lip that bruises your ass cheek sliding in and out of the car.
Add adaptive cruise control.
Add a tad more battery and make “hilltop mode” the default setting — this way 100% regen capacity would always be available, normal range would stay the same, and you’d be able to “unlock the reserve tank” if ever truly needed.
Nicer interior materials—let’s get some padded armrests.
DCFC standard on all trim levels. Later taper for faster D.C. fast charge.
I’d like a shield above the center screen to keep sunlight from making it illegible. So far I’ve just improvised something temporary with blue painter’s tape.
Anybody found a good solution?
I’m leasing, so I can’t do anything that would leave a residue or mark.
There are a few things that I’d like to see in a future version of the Bolt as follows:
1. More padding in the bottom of the seats. My buttocks gets a little sore after sitting for 2 hours or more. The Equinox’s seats are much more comfortable so use that as an example to duplicate in the Bolt. The back of the seats are fine.
2. Full speed Front Automatic braking. Currently the Bolt’s Driver Confidence Package II only has low speed front automatic braking that works from 5 mph to 50 mph. Please make it full speed Front Automatic braking.
3. Telescoping visors
4. More choices for the Hilltop reserve. Currently it’s only 10%, I’d like to see 5%, 15% and 20% as well.
5. Rainsense Wipers
6. Full HD 1280 center screen
7. Angle the center screen downwards a little to it doesn’t get so much glare and add a covering shade that sticks out a little at the top.
8. A longer range option. Perhaps you can fit a 75 kW battery in and reduce some of that deep trunk space that I really don’t need. That should increase the range to almost 300 miles.
9. Have a heat pump cabin heater instead of a resistance cabin heater to save energy.
That is about it.
Thanks,
Jeff
Lower Cost
I have to say, after owning my Chevy Bolt EV for a little more than a week now, I really LOVE it. Even though I did previously posted a long wish list of improvements in this thread, the car is the best car I have ever driven or rode in. It is so quiet and smooth riding. I have thought of some more options that I’d like to see available in newer versions of the Bolt. I will list them here:
1. Adaptive Cruise Control
2. Super Cruise Control like you just introduced in some Cadillac models for automated hands free separated highway driving
3. Faster charging options for level 2. Some home level 2 chargers can charge up to 18kW (instead of the Bolt’s current level 2 max of around 6.6 kW) which would charge the Bolt in about 4 hours instead of 9.5 hours.
4. Faster DC fast charging ability up to 120kW (currently I think the maximum is 50kW for the Bolt) so it is ready for future higher powered charging stations. Even upping it to 62 kW charging ability would charge the Bolt from empty to 90% (214 miles) in about 70 minutes (the time it takes to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner) instead of the current 2 hours at 50 kW. That way we could easily travel 600 miles in one day with recharge breaks for either breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner.
5. Integrated navigation system.
Thank you for creating a great car in the Bolt. Please continue to improve it.
