Driver Who Crashed C7 Corvette Z06 Was Going 125 MPH Before Impact

This past May, we reported a crash involving a 2016 C7 Corvette Z06 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The wreck was so significant because the car was absolutely clobbered in the incident and both the driver and passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries.

However, new details from MLive shows the driver wasn’t just speeding, he was asking for a wreck. According to the report, 21-year-old Jiefu Gong was traveling at 125 mph five seconds before the crash occurred. A half-second before impact, he was traveling at 93 mph. The speed limit on the twisting road is 35 mph.

Gong had a 17-year-old girl as a passenger in the car; both needed to be freed from the Corvette following the crash as they were pinned inside after striking a tree on the road.

The driver told police he was going 10 to 15 mph over the speed limit when the crash happened and said something ran out into the road that caused him to lose control of the car. Following an investigation, Gong’s story was proven to be false. He has since been charged with one count of reckless driving causing serious impairment of bodily function.
