The GM Authority Take

The Trax took second place in its segment in August, behind the Honda HR-V (up 26.69 percent to 9,603 units) in first and ahead of its platform mate, the Buick Encore (up 31.47 percent to 7,682 units), Toyota C-HR (2,901 units) and Nissan Juke (down 50 percent to 571 units).

We attribute the Trax’s noteworthy August sales performance to widespread availability of the model at the retail level, generous manufacturer incentives, and increased fleet sales.

Going forward, we expect the newfound competition to continue posing a threat to Trax sales volume, until Chevy overhauls (redesigns and reengineers) the model. Competition in the segment will continue to heat up as various competitors enter the space, including Ford with the EcoSport, Hyundai with the Kona, and Nissan with the Rogue Sport, which will join the Juke as a more traditionally-styled CUV.

About Chevrolet Trax

The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover. It slots below the Equinox as Chevrolet’s smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo and Buick Encore. The model was Chevrolet’s first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space and the second (after the Nissan Juke) to launch in its segment in the U.S. market.

Having launched for the 2015 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, the replacement of the LTZ trim by the new range-topping Premier model, revised interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more. The 2018 Chevy Trax represents the fourth model year of the first-generation Trax and receives several changes including three new exterior colors, a new Trax Redline Edition model, and several equipment-level changes.

The Trax is built at two assembly plants — the GM Bupyeong factory operated by GM Korea and the GM San Luis Potosi factory operated by GM Mexico. It is called the Chevrolet Tracker in some markets, incluidng South America and Russia.

  1. Imagine if Cadillac built their version of this money maker.. the difference between the Buick/Chevy version will be the interior and the engine as Cadillac will get the 200 horsepower LWC 1.6L DOHC-4v turbo used in Buick’s Cascada; the 200 hp will allow Cadillac’s version of this small CUV to be a bit quicker.

    1. No no and no.

There is no way anything a Cadillac off the Gamma platform would compete anywhere close to favorably with anything in this segment.

The bare minimum is a 2.0L turbo for the segment. The ride and refinement characteristics are highly important.

Cadillac needs to do this one right, as it will compete with the X1, GLA-Class, Audi Q3, and others. And the Gamma platform will simply not do. Might as well use Chevy platforms for all Cadillac vehicles then.

  2. A family member has a new Encore, and I can definitely see the appeal of these vehicles. We gripe about arm rests etc, but it’s a nice little car for people who want compact size with nice features.

  3. Had no idea GM had this segment in full grip. Over 108K units sold between Trax & Encore. No one even comes close.
The smallest and the largest CUV & SUV segments are in GM’s full control.
