The GM Authority Take

After several down months, Malibu sales have rebounded in August, enabling it to surpass several other key competitors such as the Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata to take third place in its competitive set in terms of overall sales volume.

First place went to the Toyota Camry (up 12.74 percent), outselling the Malibu almost two-fold. Second place went to the Honda Accord (down 0.32 percent).

We attribute the Malibu’s August sales spurt mostly to an increase in fleet sales.

Overall, the mid-size mainstream sedan segment shrunk about 6 percent in August, with the Camry and Malibu being the only models to post sales gains. During the first eight months of 2017, the segment is down nearly 17 percent to 1,209,510 units, with the Camry outselling the Malibu by roughly 130,000 units.

About Chevrolet Malibu

The 2018 Chevy Malibu represents the third model year of the ninth-generation Malibu, which rides on the GM E2 platform. Though the sedan is highly competitive in its segment, sales have generally not caught up to its rivals — the segment-leading Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

A refresh of the Malibu is on the way for what we believe to be the 2019 model year. The refreshed model is generally expected to contain a new front facia and perhaps other changes and updates as well.  See more on the 2019 Chevy Malibu.

  1. Customers fall into buying patterns. Malibu (and Mazda6) are excellent vehicles.

    1. Nothing props up a -21% ytd sales figure like a big wave of incentives and fleet sales.

Lots of GM’s marques have reverted to the fleet sales/0% financing/sweet lease rate path. Which they didn’t want to do … but it moves vehicles, and TX and Florida need the help.

  2. Chevy’s Malibu is selling well; but it is still selling only about half the number that Toyota Camry sells as one has to wonder whether General Motors needs to get Donald Trump to do Malibu commercials with the slogan of Make America Great Again in the background.

    1. So you want to advertise to white supremacists who are already buying the car but ignore actual patriots who don’t want to be governed by Russia?

  3. It would have sold to several more customers that I knew who were in the market for a new mid size sedan but the underpowered 1.5T and non defeatable stop start turned them away. I wonder how many others would have bought a Malibu if it wasn’t for those issues?
