The GM Authority Take
The launch of the all-new 2018 Chevy Equinox is finally paying off, as the vehicle is posting its highest August sales ever in both the United States and Canada.
The performance gives the Equinox the highest growth rate in the segment, placing it in fourth place out of thirteen, behind the Toyota RAV4 (up 30 percent to 43,265 units), Honda CR-V (down 15 percent to 30,960 units) and Nissan Rogue (down 9.51 percent to 29,844 units). The Equinox finished the month with more sales than the Ford Escape (down nearly 16 percent to 23,631 units), Subaru Forester (down 21 percent to 15,528 units), Subaru Crosstrek (up 46 percent to 12,823 units), Jeep Cherokee (down 50 percent to 11,874 units), Mazda CX-5 (up 9.6 percent to 11,631 units), Jeep Compass (up 4.89 percent to 9,305 units), its platform mate – the GMC Terrain (up 53.53 percent to 9,218 units), Volkswagen Tiguan (up 6.63 percent to 3,521 units) and Mitsubishi Outlander (up 29.45 percent to 2,730 units).
We attribute the Equinox’s August sales growth to two factors:
- A competitive all-new model that’s in high demand
- A growing crossover segment as a result of a shift in consumer purchase dynamics

About Chevrolet Equinox
The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover. It slots above the Chevrolet Trax and below the Chevrolet Traverse. It will also be positioned below what has been rumored to be the future Chevrolet Blazer.
The first-generation Equinox ran from the 2005-2009 model years and was based on the first-generation Theta platform. The second-generation Equinox was offered from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. Both the first- and second-generation models were “tweeners”, in that they straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The third-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its two predecessors, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.
The third-generation, 2018 and newer Equinox features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.
The Chevrolet Equinox is built primarily at the GM CAMI factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada. Two GM Mexico facilities – GM San Luis Potosi and GM Ramos Arizpe – also share in producing the vehicle for North America.

Hi Alex, thanks for providing the sales figures and percentage change with the competition. Can you please add the days supply statistic in the chart to show market strength. Thanks Mike
Mike – we’ve been after days supply and unfortunately its availability is few and far between on a model line basis. There are also issues with different sources calculating the metric differently.
We’ll continue exploring a few avenues in adding it. Cheers!
Alex
The first three are imports that sell cheaper than the Equinox, which is a superior CUV. I know because I have a 2009 Equinox, and many of my friends (one owns a Honda CR-V) find it much better than their japanese CUV. Some will trade in for the new Equinox!
It’s great that the equinox is selling this high…. just kind of disappointed that it doesn’t have laminated front glass. Same for the Terrain
You are speaking of side glass ?
Positive sir
These numbers are great, well-deserved. Toyota will (likely) always be dominant but Chevy has a good chance off knocking out Ford and Nissan.
What is going on with Jeep? I live in NYC and Jeep products are everywhere. This must be a case off great design yet poor quality. Sergio has destroyed FCA aka Chrysler Corp.
Why would Toyota be tops? I see no reason that with time and investment into brand and products, Chevrolet can’t be the winner here with the Equinox. They will need to improve the quality of the product a bit more though.
FCA has two models in this segment. The Cherokee has polarizing styling that isn’t selling any more because of initial pent up demand having been satisfied and because of the new Compass taking sales from the Cherokee. Nothing to do with quality issues. Quality is on par with GM for the most part.
The market was not lost on one vehicle and one year. That also means it has to be wine back be each vehicle over many years and that is what this one will be doing.
The key is making each model a positive in growth vs a loss like it was.
It’s just been announced that Unifor and General Motors could reach an agreement which means the Equinox factory will go on strike immediately and whatever inventory is available is what GM will have until the strike is over; this would have never happened if the factory was in Mexico.
Here’s information on the strike:
http://gmauthority.com/blog/2017/09/general-motors-canada-employees-strike-at-cami-plant-responsible-for-2018-chevrolet-equinox-production/
Also, as I state in the article: the Chevrolet Equinox is primarily built at the GM CAMI factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada. Two GM Mexico facilities – the GM San Luis Potosi and GM Ramos Arizpe – also share in producing the vehicle for North America.
So the supply won’t be zero completely. I wonder whether GM can re-allocated Equinox production quickly enough
to the two Mexican plants.
