The GM Authority Take

Envision sales are continuing to grow, with both the U.S. and Canadian sales performance being the highest since the vehicle launched in April-May timeframe of 2016.

The performance gives the Envision the highest growth rate in its segment, placing it in third place in terms of August sales volume behind the Lexus NX  (up 2 percent to 5,517 units) and Acura RDX (up 11 percent to 4,679 units). The Envision finished the month with more sales than the Lincoln MKC (down 4.41 percent to 2,343 units).

We attribute the Envision’s August sales performance to two factors: a competitive all-new model that has a lower entry level price compared to the model offered in 2016 competing in a segment that continues to grow in the popularity as a result of a shift in consumer purchase dynamics towards CUVs and SUVs. However, the Envision’s cumulative sales continue to lag behind its two primary competitors from Toyota’s Lexus and Honda’s Acura, though the Buick did catch up to those models in April, May and June thanks to a significant uptick in fleet sales.

Furthermore, we expect Envision sales to continue growing in the coming months as long as the market continues to favor crossovers and Buick is capable of keeping up with demand for the vehicle. Whether the Envision can catch up to Lexus and Acura sales seems to depend on how many fleet sales the model garners.

The vehicle is based on a variant of the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC TerrainChevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt.

  1. Alex, do u see envision as success? I do as it was unknown and now selling well. No upfront costs to build it as well.

    1. Hi Eddiedi,

I do see it as a success indeed for the reasons you mentioned. Plus it puts Buick into a very important market segment.

At this point, I think there is enough demand and sales volume for this vehicle to be built in North America. That will remove the capacity constraint issue at the Chinese plant, enabling GM to sell more units of the Envision in both China and North America.

I continue to believe that the sales potential for the model has yet to be fully realized. I think the total sales figure can be closer to 4-5 thousand a month in the US.

  2. To me it very sad that so many Americans are buying a car made in China. If Americans don’t support our local local auto workers, GM will probably close all of our North American plants and use the Chinese cheap labor. They started building cars there because China charges a duty on cars imported from the US and Canada. Is it fair trade for them to charge an import duty and we do not?
