What We Like: 2018 Buick Regal GS

The 2018 Buick Regal GS rounds out the three separate variants of Regal for the car’s latest generation. Joining the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback and Buick Regal TourX wagon, the Regal GS offers something the car hasn’t in a long time: a V6 engine.

There’s a lot to like this time around, so without further ado, we’ve compiled what we like about the 2018 Buick Regal GS.

The 3.6-liter V6 engine

Finally. We said for a long time the Buick Regal deserved a V6 engine option. Although it’s not available on any other Regal, the fact it’s now the Regal GS’ powertrain is fine by us. 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque are on tap from the 3.6-liter LGX V6 engine with shifting duties performed by a standard nine-speed automatic transmission.

It looks pretty darn good

We think it’s safe to say the 2018 Buick Regal GS sports an eye-pleasing design. It’s not over the top, but it definitely won’t be confused with a regular Regal Sportback. The aggressive front and rear fascias play really well with the more dramatic side skirts. And bright red has never looked so good on a Buick.

The AGR-certified front seats

Upon plopping into the 2018 Regal GS, one of the first thoughts to enter our minds was how comfortable the seats are. That’s because they hail from Germany and are AGR certified. AGR (Campaign for Healthier Backs) seats are used in a variety of Opels overseas, but the 2018 Regal GS is the first and only North American GM vehicle to feature them. They’re also heated, cooled and feature a massage function. More of this, please.

There’s a flat-bottom steering wheel

Sometimes, it’s the little things. Buick means business this time around, and the Regal GS’ interior proves it. This time, instead of a standard parts bin steering wheel, Buick has outfitted the car with a true flat-bottom steering wheel. It looks good and reminds the driver this isn’t your grandfather’s Buick sedan—it’s a hot hatch for young adults.

  1. Nothing about the AWD system or suspension? Or is this the list of things you like from the pages of press release?

  2. It does look good. For the first time ever I would actually buy a red car if I came to buy this car in particular. The interior looks good too and you can’t complain about that LGX motor.

    1. I wondered when GM would finally bring performance back to the brand! I’m actually now starting to get excited again about Buick since Pontiac was killed off. The LGX is a very solid motor with all the innovations they put into it. Available in the Cadillac CTS with real dual exhaust it sounds awesome and hits hard, as my brother owns one, and yes takes it to the drag strip. For those of us who can’t afford a CTS this looks like a great alternative and with AWD you will have more fun than an Audi A6 and cost of ownership as well will be a big plus.

  3. This would be the first Buick I would ever buy. Everything else still seems like it’s marketed toward the elderly.

  4. HOW’S IT SOUND??!!
Does it have a nice ‘burble’ or sound like a KIA?

    1. It sounds pretty darn good for a 3.6L 24 valve engine. Sweet, racey and gets your heart beating! Only wish it came with a true dual exhaust like the Cadillac CTS 3.6. But then who would buy a CTS when you can get this Regal RS for $20K less.

  5. So, what exactly is the point of a flat bottomed steering wheel?

    Reply
    1. Getting behind the wheel is easier, and you knee doesn’t hit it.

    2. In race cars it gives you more clearance. Serves no purpose in normal road cars.

I don’t like them because it makes turning less fluid. Especially when turning the wheel quickly one-handed when making low speed maneuvers.

  6. good looking exterior and interior – the purpose of the flat bottom steering wheel makes no sense . no mention of awd again gm misses bring out important items buyers want to know don’t they listen to their competitors ads .–most of all its not assembled in AMERICA –do you remember the CADILLAC CATERA –working in Cadillac service I know they were a piece of CRAP, leaky engines, broken door hinges, shorts, bad front suspensions , and where were they assembled GERMANY —Why aren’t we assembling AMERICAN brand cars in AMERICA , and don’t tell me its a global industry . AMERICAN people are looking for work

    1. Because it will sell in very small volumes. So to at least keep all the people involved in design, engineering, management, marketing, and sales working, we only give up manufacturing. There’s more to a car than the few hours it takes to put it together.

  7. The Buick Regal GS with V6 engine is ingenious marketing. I will buy one, since we get in Germany only the 4bängerTurbo. As a former OPEL Insignia OPC V6 turbo owner I miss the 3.6L V6 naturally aspirated engine. By the way, naturally aspirated engines are better and more economical. As with the predecessor, the Buick Regal numbers are relatively low, so that many production plants don`t calculate. It is produced in China and Germany for the brands OPEL, Buick, Holden and Vauxhall. Further production plants are too expensive, since local purchases are not enough. The US is an import country of cars from all over the world like Germany. Have a nice day!

  8. I hope GM doesn’t put a start stop function on GS model. It’s so annoying. What would be the point of a pseudo sports car that died at the light waiting to jump ahead of your fellow drivers. Hopefully, it will incorporate a button on the dash similar to Cadillac CTS to disable it. Also annoying.

    1. All Regals including GS will have start/stop. Based on photos I have seen so far, there is a blank button where the stop/start button is in the Insignia. So I assume that means it cannot be turned off in the Regal.

      1. I’ve not seen this “blank” button in any pictures. Do you have the link? Perhaps that where they will incorporate a disable button. GM keeping options open for such a button on the US made Regal GS. We’ll see when the arrive in showrooms. Keeping my fingers crossed.

          1. Hmmm, interesting. Well appreciated. I see in the Insignia they did put a button with circle around “A” off (auto start off). Perhaps it may be offered after they finalize the last design changes in the RS.

  9. Now first the Buick Regal GS with the super 3.6L V6 and 333HP. The 3.0L V6 Bi-Turbo engine of the Cadillac CT6 must be installed as the Buick Regal GS / E or GSX. Combined with a reinforced GM 9-speed sports automatic and four-wheel drive. 414HP and 555Nm are perfect for the top model. This will also be available as OPEL Insignia OPC, Vauxhall VXR and Holden Commodore VXR6 + or HSV Commodore GTS. You could also increase the 3.0V6 to 444HP and 666Nm. Just like in the case of BMW, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, this also gets the customers for more money. Opel Exclusive is an example of customer requirements cars.
