Sporty 2018 Chevrolet Equinox RS Bows In China

Chevrolet has expanded its RS portfolio in China with the introduction of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox RS. It marks the RS badge’s second appearance outside of the Chevrolet Camaro RS, which recently went on sale in China as well.

The Equinox RS, however, doesn’t add any performance to the powertrain but instead focuses on performance-oriented styling. The Equinox RS may be had in red or black exterior colors, while black adorns the Chevrolet logo, door handles, nameplates, grille surround and more. Red RS badges are also present.

Powertrains are identical to other Equinoxes with either a 1.5-liter turbocharged or 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder providing power. The 2.0-liter engine features GM’s new nine-speed automatic, while the 1.5-liter engine sticks to the familiar six-speed automatic.

The Equinox RS marks the latest addition to GM’s announcement that it would launch 20 new or refreshed vehicles in China by the year 2020.

  1. The RS moniker has ALWAYS been an appearance package for GM. On the other hand, the SS badge has historically been performance oriented (minus the decade or so, where the SS badge was slapped onto every model imaginable). Malibu SS, Malibu Maxx SS, Monte Carlo SS, etc., etc., etc.. What a pathetic time that was for GM (~’99-’09). I’m comfortable with the RS badge being used here. If GM is going to enhance a vehicle aesthetically, the RS badge is fine.

    1. Actually.. and no offense.. fact checking and memory says that the SS moniker on vehicles during that time period were in reality more powerful versions of the regular cars. Certainly more powerful than the competition. Malibu SS, Impala SS, Trailblazer SS were all greater performers than most of the competitors.. and then there was the Cobalt SS which was a beast in its segment
