The GM Authority Take

The decline in cumulative Terrain deliveries is expected given that production of the first-generation model has ended at the GM CAMI factory operated by GM Canada, causing a drop in inventory levels and availability at the dealer level as remaining stock of the first-gen model is sold out. GM reportedly planned for this scenario and built up inventory of its key models ahead of the product transition, but Terrain deliveries are down, regardless. Meanwhile, the launch of the all-new, second-generation GMC Terrain is well under way, and the new model is just now starting to arrive at dealer lots across North America.

About The GMC Terrain

The GMC Terrain is all-new for the 2018 model year. Representing the second generation of the nameplate, the new model is assembled by GM Mexico at the GM San Luis Potosi factory. The vehicle rides on an all-new architecture — GM’s D2 platform — and features all-new exterior, interior, and powertrain family.

Compared to the outgoing model, the all-new Terrain is more fuel efficient and lighter thanks to its platform and all-new powertrain lineup. It’s also slightly smaller in exterior dimensions while maintaining the interior space of the first-gen model. Hence, we expect that the introduction of the all-new, second-gen model will enable Terrain sales volumes to grow after the vehicle completes its launch process in 2017.

Though it doesn’t make for a fair comparison given the Terrain’s launch process, we are including sales results for the Terrain’s direct rivals just below.

  1. First dealers are flooded with these. Second GM has decided to lower their lease portfolio so my guess the states with high lease rates (Michigan nearly 70%) fell to believe w 50% lease rate.
Competition has increased significantly with the Escape and all new Jeep Compass Rav and Honda continues to rely on leasing

  2. Many reviews, both rags and online, insist the new Equinox and Terrain are the same size inside as the old.

    They’re not. They’re close.

The rear seat bench is about 1.5″ narrower.

The front seats have about 1″ less thigh support on bottom cushion. They are also slightly narrower.

Finally the floor area of the cargo hold is slightly smaller as well, about an inch or two in both dimensions.

Having owned a 2016 Equinox, and having sat and driven in the new one and the new Terrain too, I can feel the difference. It’s minor, but it’s there. These were almost midsize, now they are compact crossovers.

I’m not saying it was a bad move. There are probably more people that want the smaller size than wanted the larger size. Easier for parking, F/E, etc.

Just don’t say it’s the same inside.

For us it’s making us look hard at an Acadia instead. I am VERY glad GM decided to make it smaller than the Enclave/Traverse. Good product planning.
