Fifth-Gen Camaro ZL1 Holds Its Own Against A Dodge Challenger Hellcat: Video

The high-performance ZL1 version of the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro is no slouch, but compared to the highest-output American muscle cars on the road today – including models like the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and all-new, 2017 Camaro ZL1 – its 580-horsepower LSA is relatively moderate. Nonetheless, in the video above, we see a fifth-gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 make a quarter-mile pass in less than 12 seconds, running just a half-second slower than the Dodge Challenger Hellcat in the lane next to it.

While both cars have factory supercharged V8 engines displacing 6.2 liters, the Hellcat’s 707-horsepower factory rating clearly puts it ahead of the previous-generation ZL1 in terms of sheer grunt. Of course, we don’t know that these muscle cars are stock. We can at least report that each is equipped with an automatic transmission, per the video description.

The close race makes the minute-and-forty-six-second clip a good watch for both die-hard Chevrolet and Mopar fans, though the latter might gain an extra sense of satisfaction.

Click play to see these two high-powered machines blast through the quarter-mile for yourself, and if you want more Chevy-vs.-Mopar action, we recommend watching Hennessey’s 2017 HPE750 ZL1 go head-to-head with a Hellcat by clicking here.

  1. After being involved in drag racing since the mid 1960’s, one sure way to determine horsepower is the miles per hour at the 1/4 mile. Even if the car could use lower rear gears, such as 4.56 to one instead of 4:10 gears, the MPH figure will be similar. Adding some Methanol to the gasoline should show more MPH because it ( a small amount) will add HP. Too bad that so many drag strips have reduced the length from the 1/4 mile 1,320 feet to the shorter 1,000 foot track. Mission drag strip is a very old track in British Columbia and it probably is still 1/4 mile.
