The GM Authority Take

Despite the market being scorchingly hot for crossovers, the sales trajectory for the Chevy Trax is on a steady decline. The circumstance is explained by new competitors in the subcompact crossover segment (B-segment), specifically the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR. The Honda garnered nearly 10,000 sales in July while the Toyota moved almost 3,500 units. Both of the Japanese contenders are newer and are seen as generally more competitive better than the Trax. The Chevy also has a higher starting price than both the HR-V and C-HR.

The Trax’s Gamma 2 platform mate, the Buick Encore, nearly equaled the Trax in sales volume in July, with the Nissan Juke rounding out the segment in last place by a far margin. Next to enter the segment will be Ford with the EcoSport, Hyundai with the Kona, and Nissan with the Rogue Sport as a more conservatively-styled alternative to the Juke.

Going forward, we expect the newfound competition from Honda and Toyota to continue eating into Trax sales volume until Chevy overhauls (redesigns and reengineers) the model. The brand can also boost sales volumes of the current Trax by offering higher incentives, if it sees fit to do so. Though such a move will likely boost sales volume, it will also likely cause transaction prices and associated per-model profits to decrease.

The current, first-generation Chevy Trax is built at two assembly plants — the GM Bupyeong factory operated by GM Korea and the GM San Luis Potosi factory operated by GM Mexico.

  1. Hi Mary Barra. Why are you still on Trump’s Council? It’s bad enough you sell out women by tolerating a boastful pu$$y grabber but now you’re okay with Trump’s White Supremacy? I’d make Trax if you know what’s good for GM and America.

Any tool that replies to this with ‘politics don’t belong here’ and ad homimem attacks are abiding and tolerating white supremacy. Plain and simple.

      Shame on Mary Barra.
