The GM Authority Take

We attribute the ongoing transition from the now-discontinued first-generation Traverse to the all-new, second-generation model as responsible for the crossover’s July sales slide. Production of the all-new, 2018 Traverse is ramping up at the GM Lansing Delta Township factory where the crossover is assembled, and the all-new model has already started to reach dealer lots, albeit in small quantities. Its launch cadence is set to be completed by the end of calendar year 2017.

The Traverse’s July sales performance put it in fourth place in its competitive set, behind the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Honda Pilot yet ahead of the Dodge Durango, Nissan Pathfinder, GM’s own Buick Enclave, Mazda CX-9, and Volkswagen Atlas. We expect Traverse sales to start strongly increasing in the fourth quarter of 2017, as availability of the vehicle improves at the retail/dealer level, especially as consumers continue to move from sedans to CUVs.

It will be interesting to see how the arrival of the future Chevrolet Blazer will impact the Traverse. The Blazer is expected to ride on the short wheelbase version of the same C1 platform shared directly with the second-gen GMC Acadia, thereby competing with midsize Ford Edge, Nissan Murano and Toyota Highlander (which is much smaller than the Traverse). The all-new, second-gen Traverse, meanwhile, uses the long wheelbase of the C1 architecture.

About Chevrolet Traverse

After establishing a very strong presence in the full-size crossover segment, Chevrolet completely overhauled the Traverse for the 2018 model year — giving it all-new model in a hotly-contested yet growing segment. The new Traverse delivers important improvements in every aspect of the vehicle, enabling it to become even more competitive against its direct rivals, a factor that we expect will translate to higher overall sales volume and average transaction prices, both of which are the primary indicators of a model’s health and success in the marketplace.
