The GM Authority Take

The Malibu’s July sales performance landed it in sixth place in its competitive set, behind the Toyota Camry in first, Honda Accord in second, Nissan Altima in third, Ford Fusion in fourth, and Hyundai Sonata in fifth. The Malibu beat out the Kia Optima in seventh, Volkswagen Passat in eighth, Subaru Legacy in ninth, and Mazda6 in tenth. The discontinued Chrysler 200 and GM’s own Buick Regal accounted for eleventh and twelfth place, respectively.

Overall, the mainstream midsize sedan segment saw a 20 percent decrease in overall sales volume in July, so the Malibu’s 10.75 percent drop outperformed the segment average. However, the Camry and Accord sales were even less, at 0.87 and 3.26 percent, respectively.

The contraction of the midsize sedan segment is the result of the ongoing shift in consumer vehicle buying dynamics, in which car buyers choose crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and coupes. Whether the CUV craze is permanent or temporary is anyone’s guess at the moment, which is why we expect the Malibu to continue seeing depressed sales volumes in the near- to medium-terms — a rather unfortunate circumstance given the product substance delivered by the ninth-generation Malibu.

  2. GM can’t sell sedans to save its’ soul. It isn’t a hot market, but GM is particularly inept. The Malubu is a nice piece with a full range of engines minus a 6 banger. Buick has almost a year’s supply of the LaCrosse on the lots and Caddy has tanked too. Anyone remember the last time they saw a promotion for the LaCrosse, XTS, etc?
