The GM Authority Take

Despite being the oldest model in its class, the Chevy Express was the best-selling model in its competitive set — beating out much more modern offerings from Ford, Ram, and Nissan. In addition, the Express’ July sales performance in the U.S. has it outperforming the segment, which saw a 26.65 percent decrease.

Earlier this year, Navistar began contract assembly of cutaway versions of GM’s full-size vans — the Chevy Express and GMC Savana — at its plant in Ohio, while the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri continues to produce the Express, as it did before. The arrangement results in increased availability and supply of the Express as well as its twin — the GMC Savana, thereby enabling higher sales volumes of the tried-and-true van lineup.

TOTAL -26.65% 18,720 25,523 -3.36% 194,787 201,564

Still, the sales figures show an opportunity for General Motors to introduce a new and modernized van line to rival the likes of the Transit and Ram ProMaster, while continuing to offer legacy Express and Savana vans — as Ford is doing with the Transit and legacy E-Series.
