The GM Authority Take

We have expected the new 2018 Equinox to sell in even higher volumes than the model it replaced once its launch was well underway, so long as GM could keep up with demand. However, it is presently unclear whether the all-new model is responsible for the increase seen in July, or if the volume is being driven more by incentivized sales of the outgoing, last-generation model.

From a competitive standpoint, the Equinox took fifth place in its segment, behind the Toyota RAV4, which accounted for nearly twice the Equinox’s sales volume, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and Ford Escape. Coming in behind the Equinox were the Subaru Outback, Jeep Cherokee, Mazda CX-5, Jeep Compass, GMC Terrain, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Volkswagen Tiguan. The Equinox’s 7.5 percent U.S. sales growth in July also enabled it to outpace the segment, which grew an average of 1.84 percent during the same time frame.

Going forward, we expect Chevy Equinox sales to continue growing and perhaps hit the 30,000 mark as availability of the all-new model is improved and the vehicle becomes more readily available across dealerships. GM should be more than capable of meeting increased demand for the new Equinox, since it has dedicated the GM CAMI factory run by GM Canada to produce the new Equinox, while moving production of the new GMC Terrain, which was previously also assembled at CAMI, to the San Luis Potosi factory operated by GM Mexico. The move enables GM to have higher potential production capacity of both the Equinox and Terrain, as production of both vehicles — which are all-new for the 2018 model year — are assembled at separate facilities.

About The Chevrolet Equinox

The completely-overhauled 2018 Chevy Equinox features an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture (GM’s D2 platform) that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety. In addition, the 2018 Equinox gets an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model.

These enhancements build on the great reputation of the Equinox in the marketplace, taking advantage of consumers’ newfound and seemingly insatiable love affair with crossovers at the expense of other vehicle types, such as sedans.

The 2018 Equinox first launched with only the base 1.5L Turbo engine in April 2017. The optional, up-level 2.0L Turbo engine followed roughly 45 days after, thereby completing the roll-out of gasoline-engined Equinoxes. Meanwhile, the Equinox with the 1.6L turbo-diesel engine will launch at the end of the summer.

  1. I drive smaller cars (Scion Xa, Cube, Encore) to reduce carbon footprint as much as possible. But if this thing came in an electric, I’d consider.

  2. The 2.0 is getting some really great reviews. At a time when sedans are tanking this will be a bright spot for Chevy.

I am interested how the Terrain does as the present owners are very mixed on the styling.

    1. But the 1.6 and 6 speed automatic sure aren’t!

The issues with the 2.0 and 9 speed in addition to the $2k+ price premium is the requirement of premium gas, a $.40-$.50 per gallon hit around here. Unless one values performance more so than average, take rate at this price point will be low.

Right now my sister has put on the back burner the purchase of an Equinox Premier. Told her not to purchase with standard engine because performance is tepid at best with 6 speed auto. She has real issues putting Premium gas in a compact SUV! Conversely, I recently added an Equinox Premier with 2.0 and 9 speed. Performance is more than adequate but hoping average mpg improves beyond current 24.1.

      1. I’m pretty sure you meant 1.5 with 6 speed. There’s also the Terrain with 1.5 9 speed though

        Reply
        1. Correct 1.5–problem with small phones and fat fingers!

Other than not liking looks of Terrain, having a bad experience with the GMC dealership 45 miles away, she will wait for 9 speed 1.5 Equinox from current dealership 15 miles away!

      2. The 2.0 is only premium recommended. Chevy uses only premium recommended engines to give owners the choice.

It is not a premium recommended.

As for fuel cost I lived 9 years with a 2.o Turbo on premium and with the higher mpg the added cost was not a issue.

Note most 2.0 GM engines get better than rated mpg in most applications,

My HHR SS with even the Turbo upgrade to 300 hp got 25 around town driving like I stole it. 31 highway.

        Reply
        1. Let’s see the horsepower ratings listed are not applicable with non premium fuel! So I paid$2k plus for the better performance of the 2.0 but HP and torque are less with non-premium fuel! So I can enjoy less performance until there are knock issues when manual says Premium must be used!

$.40 or $.50 more per gallon you may not find objectionable but others do!

Frankly would have much preferred 3.6 V6 over 2.0 Turbo. Much more refined, quieter and regular fuel. All reasons I specd 3.6 vs 2.0 in both my ATS and CTS! Both times drove both in advance with refinement being first requirement!

          Reply
          1. You lose 20 mpg on regular and still have more than the base engine.

The V6 get no wher near the same mpg , weighs more and has much less bottom end.

I like both engines and own both and the Turbo is the cheapest to drive and the most fun.

As for quiet it just depends what it is in.

So the rating is Premium Recomended not Required. Be truth ful here not biased.

First off this is a SUV not a Camaro. Like the last model most will buy the base engine anyways. The base engine is a good general use engine and better than the last Eco that many issues with oil in this model.

To be the V6 and Six speed was not all that great in the last. There was a lot of delay in the gas pedal.

Note I own a Terrain V6 so this is first hand experience.

Like it or not most mid size vehicles will be 4 or Turbo 4 engine moving forward. I too would rather have a six in a vehicle like this but if I remain honest the Turbo 4 works as well or better.

My MOG was great, power was amazing, durability was never an issue and the cost to drive it was less even on the good go juice.

There was 500 pounds difference in weight on the two vehicles but there was 7 mpg difference between them in just city more highway. The Turbo was hindered by a 4 speed auto too.

I will wager the new Nox will meet and beat the EPA numbers.

In a CTS I too would take the six. But here you are never going to get the choice but the engine here will work fine in this application.

85% of buyers here never owned a V6 anyways.

The bottom line here is I like both engines but the choice here is not a failure and it will do fine.

If the Turbo keeps the auto stop off the vehicle I am all for it.

            Pick your poison carefully here.

            1. Just so you know 2.0 in my Equinox does have the infamous start stop gimmick that will save a teaspoon of gas and probably chew up batteries and starters! At least in my CT6 I can deactivate until car is shut off!

              Reply
              1. I can deactivate the stop start feature by putting into manual mode on the Malibu. And also the stop start doesn’t always activate if it’s a hot weather or cold.

  3. The Equinox has a long way to go to beat the RAV and Rogue. Good luck!

    1. I have a 2009 Equinox and it is a much better vehicle than the RAV4 and Rogue. Those two are considered “disposables”, so the owners have to buy another in the same time period for an Equinox owner. That is why there are more sales for the Japanese vehicles. What would you prefer: two pieces of fish or a great steak?

  4. But sales does beat out CRV Rouge and Escape if you include the sales of the Terrain though LOL

  5. The new 2018 Equinox is also built in Mexico for US consumption. Ensure your Equinox VIN starts with a 2 for a Canadian made vehicle
