The GM Authority Take

The Cruze’s July U.S. sales performance put it in sixth place in terms of overall sales volume in its competitive set, behind the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Ford Focus, and Hyundai Elantra. The Cruze was, however, ahead of the Kia Forte, Volkswagen Jetta sedan, Subaru Impreza, Mazda3, Mitsubishi Lancer and Volkswagen Golf. More concerning is the fact that the 10.5 percent decrease in July Cruze sales volume was greater than the 4.41 percent average for the segment, meaning that Cruze sales fell faster than the rest average of its competitive set.

July’s sales performance shows quite clearly why Cruze production is being cut at the GM Lordstown factory, where the Cruze sedan is assembled. The plant saw three weeks of downtime in July, up from a previously-planned two weeks. Even so, GM has cancelled layoffs at the facility, which it was planning to commence this summer. The Cruze hatchback, meanwhile, is assembled by GM Mexico at the GM Ramos Arizpe factory, and its production appears to not be impacted.

About The Chevrolet Cruze

Chevrolet completely overhauled the Cruze sedan for the 2016 model year, marking the second generation of the nameplate. For the subsequent 2017 model year, Chevy gave the Cruze sedan several changes and updates and also launched the five-door Cruze hatch, which better positions the vehicle family against segment rivals from Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and Honda. The 2018 model year saw the Cruze family gain a diesel model for the hatchback along with a few other minor changes.

  1. It would be great to see a commercial for the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze especially the Cruze Diesel and how it is capable of mileage equal to a hybrid at 52 mpg or how the Cruze Hatchback with the rear seats folded has a cargo capacity of 47.2 cubic feet.

    1. There has been an article on MotorTrend, where they’ve stated that the 2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel was able to beat EPA estimates, to provide a Whopping 72mpg on the highway. That’ll give you an astound 1000miles between fill-ups.

      2. I Own a 2014 Chevy Sonic w/ a 1.8L EcoTec. EPA estimates that it’ll get 35mpg on the highway. I’ll tell ya, that I can get 55mpg going 70mph. Giving me 650+ miles on a single fill-up. Leaving for vacation soon, and getting an Oil change, and Engine Air Filter replaced, should bring it up to about 60mpg. I’ll update afterwards.

  2. Maybe if they offered an up graded gas engine? Personally I’m not interested in that pop gun 153 horse engine and I don’t want a diesel. An LTG tuned to 200-225 hp would be great. One ither thing – the hatch is seriously over priced. The $5k premium over the sedan would be justfied if it came with the LTG standard.

    1. It’s not a markup for the hatch, per se. The Cruze hatch just costs more because it is only available in the LT and Premier trims. The price of the Cruze sedan and LT and Cruze hatch LT is nearly the same, within $500 or so.

  3. I would love to see a break out of the hatch and sedan to see if the hatch sold more cars or just took sedan sales.

I see them here but not in great numbers.

    1. I’ll work on getting these. It’s not something that is generally available, so I’ll have to use unofficial means of getting them.

      1. I used to know someone who could get me what they called saturation numbers but he left GM.

They have really good breakdowns of what is going out the door.

It also was good for finding out rare combinations of colors and options.

      2. I’m interested in knowing this too!

  4. The new design is a step backwards from the first generation. The first generation was a unique look. I have owned 3. The current model looks much like its competition the Hyundai elantra. It now just blends in with the herd. Absolutely love my Cruzes, but sadly, I won’t be buying a 4th.

*I work in sales consulting and purchase a new vehicle every 2 years.

    1. Agree. I drove a ’13 Cruze about 2K when my mom had it on lease. It was an LS, with minimal options, but a solid small car with a nice interior. I just had a ’17 Cruze “LT” as a loaner for 5 days? Full step backward from last gen. Cheaper interior, especially the seats and the start /stop “feature” was awful. I expect sales will continue to decline.

  5. Idk what happened to the Cruze lately but Chevrolet takes an L for whatever it is now
