The GM Authority Take

The XT5 continues to reap the benefits of current market trends in which consumers are flocking to crossovers rather than other vehicle types, such as sedans. The vehicle’s July sales performance enabled it to take second place in terms of cumulative sales volume in the front-drive, midsize luxury crossover space, directly behind the Lexus RX, which accounted for a whopping 9,632 deliveries during the same time period — 4,128 units more than the XT5.

Sales Numbers - Mid-Size Luxury Front-Drive CUV Sales - July 2017 - United States

MODEL JUL 17 / JUL 16 JULY 17 JULY 16 YTD 17 / YTD 16 YTD 17 YTD 16
RX +13.03% 9,632 8,522 -2.70% 56,369 57,934
XT5 +11.17% 5,504 4,951 +190.34% 35,302 12,159
MDX -3.57% 4,727 4,902 -4.18% 28,282 29,517
MKX -8.81% 2,422 2,656 +1.01% 17,924 17,745

Even so, Cadillac remains absent from the sport-luxury crossover space occupied by market stalwarts from BMW (X5), Mercedes-Benz (GLE-Class), Audi (Q7), Porsche (Cayenne) and Jaguar (F-Pace).

  1. I bought a Granite Metallic Premium Luxury AWD in July or the total would have been 5,503 , 🙂 .
Trading in my SRX was difficult because i really did like it , but this XT5 is light years ahead of it in terms of fit n finish and quality . There is a reason Cadillac sold so many SRX’s because it was a good car, but Cadillac did a good job in this 3rd generation .
I know some people have a problem with CUE and even this new system responds faster than the older version did, it’s an easy system to use if you have ever used an Android tablet . The only down side is it loves to show finger prints but so does my Android tablet .
I think the only reason Lexus sells so many of their RX350’s is the design and reliability . I think some of those sales are people want something different in the design , it’s becoming a problem with so many CUV’s on the market starting to look a bit the same .
If Cadillac would spent more advertising dollars on the XT5 it just might knock the Lexus off the leadership role .

  2. Cadillac recognized that a modern luxury car buyer doesn’t want just fit and finish as the individual may also want some performance and this is why Cadillac began building their V-series cars; it’s time for Cadillac to acknowledge that the world has changed and luxury CUV buyers want performance also; thus Cadillac needs to consider an entry model XT5 with the 275 horsepower LTG 2.0L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo and a top tier 400 hp LGW 3.0L DOHC-4v V6 Twin Turbo.

  3. That number is still pretty low.

    1. Low enough to be second in the segment, while raking in the profits hand over fist.

Seriously, the costs on this model are minuscule when the majority of the development work and tooling has already been done with the likes of the Acadia.
