The Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio will be one to remember for defending champion and McLaren driver Alvaro Parente. Parente took the win in both rounds, putting on a clinic as he lead from pole in round 6 and fighting his way up to the lead within the first lap in round 7.
In round 6 Parente’s closest rivals were the two Cadillac Racing entries of Michael Cooper, who took a win at Mid-Ohio last year, and Johnny O’Connell in second and third, respectively. Cooper tried to put pressure on Parente throughout the first half of the race as they constantly traded fastest laps, but Cooper couldn’t make an overtake happen eventually allowing Parente to build a sizable gap.
Round 7 was the same story for Parente, albeit with more overtaking. The McLaren driver started from third and overtook his way to the lead making quick work of Kyle Marcelli of R. Ferri Motorsport Ferrari and polesetter Patrick Long of Porsche. After Parente made his way to first, he began to open up a gap in a dominate performance.
Cadillac Racing was unable to duplicate its Round 6 performance in Round 7 of the double-header. Johnny O’Connell ended the round in eleventh after getting turned around in the keyhole by Alec Udell and losing a ton of track position. Meanwhile, Michael Cooper held station in seventh for the majority of the race where he would eventually end up finishing.
Michael Cooper is currently second in the drivers championship standings with 220 points, just 3 points behind Porsche’s Patrick Long, while O’Connell is fifth with 166 points. Meanwhile, Cadillac Racing is 3rd in the manufacturing points, with 76 points, whil first-place Porsche has 84. The next race in Pirelli World Challenge action is August 11-13 at Utah Motorsports Park.
